The VALORANT message “DX11 feature level 10.0 is required to run the engine” means the graphics adapter and driver selected for the game are not exposing Direct3D feature level 10_0 or higher. It does not simply mean that the DirectX 12 runtime is missing. DirectX feature levels describe the GPU functions that the active display driver makes available, so a capable card can still trigger the error when its driver is corrupt, outdated, or when Windows has selected an integrated adapter instead of a discrete one.
Check the adapter and feature levels in Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool before buying hardware. If 10_0 appears, update Windows and the graphics driver, then force VALORANT to use the intended GPU. If 10_0 never appears with the correct driver, the adapter is the limiting component and a compatible replacement is the lasting fix.

What does the VALORANT DX11 feature-level 10.0 error actually mean?
VALORANT requires a Direct3D 11-capable device. During startup, the game asks the active graphics adapter to create a Direct3D device at a supported feature level. Feature level 10_0 is a defined set of GPU capabilities; it is not a different name for the DirectX runtime version shown in Windows.
Microsoft’s feature-level model is cumulative: a higher level includes the functionality of lower levels. An adapter that reports 11_0, 11_1 or a later level therefore satisfies a request for 10_0. An adapter that reports only 9_x levels does not, even if Windows reports that DirectX 12 is installed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The error can therefore have two broad causes:
- Software or selection problem: the hardware could support 10_0, but its display driver is missing, damaged, outdated, or not the driver attached to the adapter VALORANT is using.
- Hardware limitation: the selected adapter genuinely does not expose 10_0, even after the correct current driver is installed.
The distinction matters. Reinstalling a runtime cannot add a feature level that the GPU itself does not provide, while replacing a card is unnecessary if Windows is simply using the wrong adapter.
How do I check whether my graphics card supports feature level 10_0?
Use dxdiag first. It shows the adapter Windows has initialized and the feature levels reported by its installed driver.
- Press Windows key + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. Approve the prompt to check whether the drivers are digitally signed if Windows displays one. - Open the Display tab. On systems with more than one GPU, Windows may show Display 1, Display 2, or additional display tabs. Inspect each adapter rather than assuming the first tab is the one used by the game.
- Record the Name, Manufacturer, Driver Model, and Feature Levels. A listing containing
10_0or any higher level means that adapter can meet the feature-level requirement. - Check the Notes box for driver problems. Messages about a problem with the device, a stopped driver, or an unsigned or generic driver indicate that the feature-level result may not represent a healthy installation.
- Repeat the inspection for every display adapter. On a laptop, the integrated GPU may appear on one tab and the discrete GPU on another; the adapter selected for VALORANT is the relevant one.
Do not infer support from the amount of video memory or from the DirectX version in the System tab. A card can have plenty of VRAM and still lack the required feature level, while a modest card can satisfy 10_0 when its driver is functioning correctly.
What hardware and Windows versions does VALORANT require?
Riot’s current requirements call for DirectX 11 support and a supported 64-bit Windows installation. The following examples are Riot’s published GPU tiers, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or resolution.
| Tier | Riot-listed examples | Other published requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220 | Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, 64-bit, or Windows 11 64-bit; 4 GB RAM; DirectX 11 support |
| Recommended | NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 or AMD Radeon R7 240 | Intended for a more comfortable experience than the minimum tier; exact performance depends on the rest of the system and settings |
| High-end | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, AMD Radeon R7 370, or Intel Arc A310 | A stronger class of adapter for higher settings or frame-rate targets; Riot’s tier is not a promise of a fixed FPS |
These model names are comparison points, not a command to purchase one specific card. Newer or different models can qualify if their driver reports the needed feature level and the rest of the PC is compatible. Riot also states that VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines, so moving the installation to a hosted desktop is not an official workaround for an unsupported local adapter.

How do I fix the error when dxdiag already lists 10_0?
If the active adapter reports 10_0 or higher, work through software and GPU-selection checks before considering an upgrade.
1. Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install applicable quality, feature, and hardware-driver updates. Restart even if Windows does not explicitly request one. A partially applied display component can leave the driver and Direct3D subsystem out of sync until the reboot completes.
2. Install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer
Identify the adapter name in dxdiag, then obtain the current Windows driver from its manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Choose the driver for the exact model and 64-bit Windows edition. During setup, use the installer’s clean or reset option when offered, especially if dxdiag reports a driver fault or the problem began after a failed update. Restart after installation and run dxdiag again.
A generic driver supplied by Windows may provide basic display output without exposing the full feature set expected by a game. Conversely, installing a driver for the wrong model can create a new failure, so verify the model before proceeding.
3. Select the intended GPU on a dual-GPU laptop
For Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Add VALORANT if it is not listed, select the game executable, choose Options, set it to High performance, and save. On Windows 10, the equivalent controls are under Settings → System → Display → Graphics settings.

Use the laptop’s vendor control panel as an additional check if it provides a per-application GPU setting. Connect the charger, avoid a battery-saver mode that forces integrated graphics, and restart the Riot client after changing the assignment. Then check dxdiag and test the game again. The goal is not merely to have a discrete GPU installed; VALORANT must actually be launched on it.
4. Repair the game installation and Vanguard
Once Windows and the display driver are current, use the Riot client’s repair option if available. If the launch still fails, uninstall and reinstall Riot Vanguard and VALORANT using Riot’s current installer, then reboot. This is a later software check: repairing game files cannot make an adapter report a feature level it does not support, but it can correct damaged files or an incomplete update when the hardware check is otherwise valid.
5. Recheck after every major change
Run dxdiag again after the reboot. If the same adapter now reports 10_0 or higher and VALORANT still shows the message, confirm that the game executable has the high-performance assignment and that no remote-desktop session or compatibility layer is intercepting the graphics device. Keep a note of which Display tab corresponds to the monitor or laptop panel you are using.
What if dxdiag does not list feature level 10_0?
If the correct manufacturer driver is installed, Windows is current, and the adapter still reports only lower levels, the GPU is the limiting component. No DirectX runtime installer, registry tweak, or replacement DLL can add hardware functionality that the device does not implement.

Before buying a card, verify the motherboard slot, power-supply capacity and connectors, case length and height clearance, monitor outputs, and 64-bit Windows support. A card that meets the feature-level requirement can still be unusable if it does not fit the case or the power supply cannot run it. A GTX 1050 Ti is one Riot-listed high-end example and a reasonable search term for a replacement, but compare its physical and electrical requirements with the specific PC rather than treating the model as universally compatible.

Laptop limitations
Laptop GPUs are usually soldered to the motherboard, so an internal replacement is generally not a practical repair. First make sure the discrete adapter is enabled, its driver is installed, and the game is assigned to it. If the only available adapter remains below 10_0, the durable options are a supported computer or an officially supported upgrade path for that particular laptop; cloud gaming and virtual machines are not supported by Riot for VALORANT.
Used or older hardware
For second-hand systems, ask for a dxdiag report or check the exact GPU model in the manufacturer’s specifications before paying. Do not rely on a seller’s statement that the machine “has DirectX 12.” The decisive evidence is the feature-level list from the active adapter with a proper driver installed.
Which fix should I try first?
Use this decision sequence to avoid spending money before eliminating configuration problems.
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 10_0 or higher is listed, but the game errors | Driver condition, wrong adapter, or damaged installation | Update Windows and the manufacturer driver, select the high-performance adapter, reboot, then repair VALORANT/Vanguard |
| 10_0 appears on one Display tab but not the adapter used by the game | VALORANT is launching on an integrated or fallback adapter | Assign the executable to the discrete GPU in Windows Graphics settings and the laptop GPU control panel |
| No adapter lists 10_0, and drivers are current | Hardware does not meet the Direct3D requirement | Compare the system with Riot’s GPU tiers and plan a compatible hardware replacement |
| The game is running in a virtual machine or cloud session | Unsupported execution environment | Run VALORANT on a supported local Windows installation instead |
What should I avoid when troubleshooting?
- Do not download a random
d3d11.dll. Replacing a system DLL from an unknown site can introduce malware or break other applications. The feature level comes from the device and its driver, not from a loose file. - Do not treat a generic DirectX installer as a hardware upgrade. Installing or repairing runtime components may fix missing software files, but it cannot turn a feature-level-9 adapter into a 10_0 device.
- Do not judge by DirectX 12 alone. The runtime label and the adapter’s feature-level capabilities are separate checks.
- Do not buy before checking the active adapter. A driver update or a high-performance GPU assignment can solve the error at no hardware cost.
- Do not ignore power and compatibility limits. On a desktop, slot type, power connectors, supply capacity, case clearance, and display outputs all matter; on a laptop, confirm whether the discrete GPU is actually available.
Why can the error appear after VALORANT or Windows worked before?
A Windows update, failed graphics-driver update, BIOS or firmware change, or laptop power-profile change can alter which adapter is initialized or which driver is active. The physical GPU may be unchanged while its advertised feature levels disappear because Windows has fallen back to a basic or corrupted driver. Comparing the Display tabs and driver details in dxdiag before and after an update helps distinguish that situation from a genuine hardware limitation.
If the adapter name changes to a generic display device, or the feature-level list is missing after an update, reinstall the exact NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver and reboot before testing the game again. If the named adapter and its feature levels remain stable but 10_0 is absent, software repair is unlikely to change the result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can lowering VALORANT’s resolution or graphics quality bypass this error?
No. The feature-level check occurs while the engine is creating its Direct3D device, before in-game quality settings are applied. Lower settings can help performance after the game launches, but they cannot supply a missing 10_0 capability.
Why does dxdiag show more than one graphics adapter on my laptop?
Hybrid laptops commonly expose an integrated processor graphics device and a separate discrete GPU, so Windows lists them on different Display tabs. The important question is which adapter is assigned to the VALORANT executable, not which adapter appears first.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is 4 GB of RAM enough to run VALORANT?
Riot lists 4 GB RAM in its published requirements, but that figure is a minimum system requirement rather than a promise of smooth performance in every situation. Background applications, the processor, storage, driver state, and graphics settings still affect playability.
Can a 32-bit edition of Windows satisfy the requirement if my GPU is new enough?
Riot’s current requirement specifies supported 64-bit Windows: Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, 64-bit, or Windows 11 64-bit. A 32-bit installation is outside that stated configuration, regardless of the graphics card’s feature levels.
