VAN9001 means Riot Vanguard cannot detect an enabled TPM 2.0 security module on your PC. It is a Vanguard security error, not a normal VALORANT game error. Open tpm.msc first; if Windows does not show “The TPM is ready for use” and “Specification Version 2.0,” enable your processor’s firmware TPM in UEFI/BIOS. Intel systems generally use Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT), while AMD systems use AMD fTPM.

After saving the firmware change, restart Windows, verify TPM 2.0 again, and relaunch VALORANT. A discrete TPM 2.0 module can work on a compatible motherboard, but it is not a universal fix. BIOS menus differ by manufacturer, and changing TPM settings can affect BitLocker keys, so prepare for those risks before editing firmware.

What does Valorant error VAN9001 mean?

VAN9001 is Riot Vanguard’s way of reporting that TPM 2.0 is required but is not detected as enabled. Riot places it among the VAN 9000-and-above Vanguard errors. The message may appear as “This build of Vanguard requires TPM 2.0 to be enabled in order to play.”

TPM, or Trusted Platform Module, is a hardware-backed security function used for cryptographic keys and system-integrity checks. On many recent computers it is built into the processor or platform firmware rather than installed as a separate chip. Vanguard relies on TPM 2.0 for security checks; TPM 1.2 or an older specification does not meet this particular requirement.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The error does not prove that your computer lacks TPM hardware. TPM may simply be disabled in firmware, Windows may be reporting an older specification, or Vanguard may need a BIOS update before it can recognize a correctly configured module.

How do I check whether TPM 2.0 is already enabled?

Check Windows before changing BIOS settings. This tells you whether the problem is an actual missing requirement or only a firmware configuration issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type tpm.msc and press Enter.
  3. Read the status in the TPM Management window. The required status is “The TPM is ready for use.”
  4. Check Specification Version. It must read 2.0.

If both values are present, TPM 2.0 is enabled from Windows’ perspective. Restart the PC and try VALORANT once; a temporary Vanguard state can clear after a reboot.

If the specification says 1.2 or another lower version, that TPM does not satisfy VAN9001. If Windows says a compatible TPM cannot be found, the feature may be disabled in UEFI/BIOS rather than physically absent.

You can also check through Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details. This alternate page should identify the security processor and its specification, but tpm.msc provides the two status values Riot’s troubleshooting path relies on.

How do I open UEFI or BIOS from Windows?

Use Windows’ built-in recovery path when you are unsure which key opens firmware setup.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Next to Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. After the blue recovery screen appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings.
  4. Select Restart to enter the firmware interface.

You can alternatively restart and press the manufacturer’s setup key as the computer starts. Delete, F2, and F10 are common choices, but the correct key depends on the motherboard or computer model. If a splash screen identifies a different key, follow that prompt. On branded desktops and laptops, the manufacturer’s support instructions are safer than guessing.

Which TPM setting should I enable on an Intel or AMD PC?

Look for a firmware TPM option, not a setting that merely says “TPM security” without identifying the platform technology. Names and menu locations vary between firmware versions.

Processor platform Setting to enable Common menu locations
Intel Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT) Advanced > PCH-FW Configuration; Security > Trusted Computing
AMD AMD fTPM or AMD CPU fTPM Advanced > AMD fTPM Configuration; Security > Trusted Computing

Intel: enable PTT

In the firmware interface, search the Advanced or Security sections for Intel Platform Trust Technology, usually abbreviated PTT. Set it to Enabled. Some boards place it under Advanced > PCH-FW Configuration; others use Security > Trusted Computing.

AMD: enable fTPM

On an AMD system, find AMD fTPM or AMD CPU fTPM. The option may be under Advanced > AMD fTPM Configuration or Security > Trusted Computing. Enable the firmware TPM rather than selecting an unrelated security or boot option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save and exit using the firmware’s own command, commonly Save Changes and Exit. Let Windows boot normally; do not power off while firmware changes are being written.

Do I need to buy a physical TPM 2.0 module?

Usually, no. Modern Intel and AMD platforms often provide TPM through PTT or fTPM, so enabling the firmware feature is the broader and simpler route.

A discrete TPM 2.0 module can satisfy the basic Vanguard requirement behind VAN9001 when the motherboard supports that module. It is a conditional hardware option, not a universal accessory: the module must match the motherboard’s header, electrical specification, firmware support, and vendor model. A module designed for one board family may not fit or function on another.

Riot distinguishes this basic TPM requirement from a separate VAN: RESTRICTION situation, where firmware-based Intel PTT or AMD fTPM is required. For that reason, buying a plug-in module is not a guaranteed solution for every Vanguard restriction. Confirm the exact motherboard model and the manufacturer’s compatibility list before purchasing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do after enabling TPM?

Verification is essential because a firmware menu can report an enabled setting even when Windows has not initialized it correctly.

  1. Allow the computer to boot completely into Windows.
  2. Press Windows key + R, enter tpm.msc, and press Enter.
  3. Confirm the status says “The TPM is ready for use.”
  4. Confirm Specification Version is 2.0.
  5. Launch VALORANT again.

If both checks pass, Vanguard should have the TPM state it requires. Do not repeatedly toggle the setting once it is working; leave PTT or fTPM enabled and make only one controlled change at a time.

Why does VAN9001 remain after TPM 2.0 appears ready?

A ready TPM 2.0 in Windows does not always mean the motherboard firmware and Vanguard are communicating correctly. Work through these checks in order.

Update the exact motherboard BIOS

Find the motherboard or computer model, download the BIOS intended for that exact model from its manufacturer, and follow the vendor’s update procedure. Do not use firmware for a similar-looking model. After the update, re-enter UEFI/BIOS and verify that PTT or fTPM is still enabled; firmware updates can restore default settings.

Check the TPM manufacturer details

In the TPM Management window, review the manufacturer information and version fields. If Vanguard still blocks launch despite a ready 2.0 TPM, an outdated platform firmware or TPM implementation may be involved. Riot’s guidance is to check the TPM manufacturer version, update the exact motherboard BIOS, and confirm the firmware TPM setting afterward.

Confirm that you changed the correct device

Computers with a discrete module and a firmware TPM can expose several similarly named options. Ensure the TPM reported by Windows is the one enabled in the current firmware configuration. If a module was recently installed, shut down safely and confirm that the board actually supports that module and header.

Restart rather than relying on sleep

Use Windows’ Restart command after firmware changes. Resuming from sleep or hibernation may not fully reinitialize the security processor, leaving Vanguard with the previous state.

What are the BitLocker and boot risks?

TPM settings protect encryption keys as well as game-security checks. Switching between TPM modes, changing from a discrete module to firmware TPM, or clearing TPM data can remove or invalidate stored TPM keys. If BitLocker is enabled, Windows may request its recovery key on the next boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Before changing TPM configuration, suspend BitLocker protection if your Windows edition and policy provide that option, or make sure the complete BitLocker recovery key is available.
  • Do not choose Clear TPM simply because VAN9001 appears. Clearing is a destructive security operation and is different from enabling PTT or fTPM.
  • Record your current firmware settings so you can restore them if the computer stops booting.
  • If a menu is unfamiliar, stop and use the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions. Incorrect BIOS changes can cause startup problems.

These precautions do not mean enabling TPM is unsafe; they prevent a game fix from turning into an avoidable encryption or boot-recovery incident.

When should I contact Riot Player Support?

Submit a Riot Player Support ticket if VAN9001 continues after Windows confirms a ready TPM 2.0, the firmware TPM remains enabled, and the exact motherboard BIOS is current. Include the precise VAN error, your motherboard or computer model, TPM status and specification, BIOS version, and any relevant Vanguard or system logs. Riot’s Vanguard error catalog directs players to provide logs when the matching troubleshooting guide does not resolve the error.

Do not substitute a different VAN code or a generic launch-error fix. VAN9001 specifically concerns TPM 2.0 detection or enablement; the correct escalation details help support distinguish it from Secure Boot, virtualization, or other Vanguard restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix VAN9001 by clearing the TPM?

Clearing the TPM is not the normal remedy and can remove keys used by Windows and BitLocker. Enable PTT or fTPM first, and only perform a clear operation when the computer manufacturer or support technician explicitly instructs you and you have secured the recovery information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether my computer uses a firmware TPM or a separate chip?

The firmware menu usually labels the integrated option PTT on Intel systems and fTPM on AMD systems. A separate module is a physical board accessory connected to a motherboard header; its compatibility depends on the exact board model, so check the manufacturer documentation rather than assuming any TPM 2.0 module will work.

What if my TPM specification is 1.2?

TPM 1.2 or lower does not satisfy the VAN9001 requirement. Check whether a BIOS update exposes a supported firmware TPM 2.0 option; if the platform cannot provide TPM 2.0, the hardware may not meet Vanguard’s requirement.

Why did Windows ask for a recovery key after I changed TPM settings?

BitLocker can detect a changed TPM state and require its recovery key to unlock the drive. Enter the saved recovery key, then review the TPM configuration and BitLocker protection before making further firmware changes.
