VAN 185 usually indicates a session or connection issue involving VALORANT, Riot Client, and Riot Vanguard. The code does not identify one guaranteed cause. Riot’s recommended approach is to work through its checks in order, launching the game after each one.
What does VAN 185 mean?
Riot Games Support says VAN 185 “usually points to a session or connection issue between your game, Riot Client, and Riot Vanguard.” Riot lists it alongside messages such as a connection error asking you to relaunch the client, or an unexpected Vanguard error. The code describes a likely category of problem; it does not pinpoint whether the cause is the game session, client, Vanguard, or connection.

Fix VAN 185 in Riot’s recommended order
Follow these steps in sequence. Launch VALORANT after each step; if the error is gone, there is no need to continue.

- Check the game’s minimum requirements. Confirm that your PC meets the requirements for VALORANT.
- Disconnect controllers and unnecessary USB devices. Leave connected only the devices you need to use the PC and play.
- Fully close and restart Riot Client. Exit the client, make sure it has closed, then open it again and launch VALORANT.
- Sign out of Riot Client on other PCs. If you are logged in on another computer, log out there before retrying.
- Restart your PC. Then open Riot Client and test the game.
- Reinstall Riot Vanguard. Uninstall Vanguard, restart your PC, then launch a Riot game so Vanguard can be installed again. Riot’s Vanguard removal guide includes standard and manual removal instructions.
- Perform a clean boot to check for background interference. Use Riot’s clean boot instructions: hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining services, then re-enable
vgcbefore restarting. Test VALORANT in that state. - Work through Riot’s PC connection troubleshooting. These are diagnostic checks, not confirmed fixes for every VAN 185 case; see the next section for details.
- Reinstall VALORANT. If the preceding checks have not helped, reinstall the game and try again.
- Contact Riot Player Support. If VAN 185 remains, submit a ticket with logs. Riot’s Riot Repair Tool can gather VALORANT logs into an archive to attach to your ticket.
Connection checks to try if the earlier steps fail
Riot’s PC connection troubleshooting guide covers several ways to investigate connection problems. Try relevant checks one at a time so you can tell whether a change affects the error.
- Test with wired Ethernet if you are using Wi-Fi. Connecting the PC directly to the router can help rule out wireless interference. It is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed VAN 185 cure.
- Turn off VPNs or proxies. Riot advises disabling them unless a Riot technical specialist has asked you to perform a specific test.
- Review DNS settings, Windows updates, and network-adapter updates. Use Riot’s connection guide for the applicable steps.
- Check firewall configuration and port forwarding. Change these settings only as appropriate for your network and Riot’s instructions; they are general connection troubleshooting measures, not a confirmed cause of this code.
When to send Riot Support a ticket
Contact Riot Player Support if VAN 185 continues after the ordered checks. Include a clear description of when the error appears and attach the log archive generated by Riot Repair Tool. That gives Support diagnostic information about your VALORANT installation and session.
