Valve’s SteamVR Beta 2.18.4, posted October 16, 2026, described a possible remedy for roughly 300-millisecond gaps in Steam Link frame delivery as a “speculative fix.” Five days later, the stable SteamVR 2.18 release notes changed that wording to “fixed,” but only for some packet-loss situations. The update therefore targets a specific streaming failure, not every cause of Steam Link stutter or freezing.
At 90 Hz, a 300 ms interruption spans about 27 frame intervals (300 ÷ 11.1 ms). That calculation explains why the symptom can look like a complete freeze, but it is not a Valve performance measurement. The release notes publish no algorithm, reproduction recipe, success rate or test conditions.

What does the 300 ms Steam Link frame-gap fix do?
It is intended to stop an approximately 300 ms pause in frame delivery when packet loss occurs during Steam Link streaming. Valve first called the change “speculative” in Beta 2.18.4, then described it as “fixed” in stable SteamVR 2.18. The scope remains limited: a different network fault, a game-specific crash or a headset-side problem may continue to cause stutter.
Valve has not publicly explained whether the change alters buffering, retransmission, concealment or another part of the streaming pipeline. There is also no published success percentage, latency target or list of affected routers and games, so the wording should not be read as a universal guarantee.

Is SteamVR 2.18.4’s fix real or still speculative?
The two release notes use different confidence levels because they describe different builds. The beta notice records an experimental change; the stable notes state that the gap was fixed in the situations Valve identified.
| Build and date | Valve’s wording | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| SteamVR Beta 2.18.4 — October 16, 2026 | “Speculative fix for ~300ms gaps in frame delivery in some packet-loss situations.” | A candidate change was included for testing, without public mechanism or outcome data. |
| SteamVR 2.18 stable — October 21, 2026 | “Fixed ~300ms gaps in frame delivery in some packet-loss situations.” | Valve considers the targeted issue resolved in the released build, within the stated packet-loss scope. |
“Fixed” does not mean that every wireless network will deliver uninterrupted frames. Steam Link can still freeze when network time varies sharply, when loss is severe, or when another part of the PC-VR pipeline is overloaded.

Why does packet loss make Steam Link freeze?
Steam Link must deliver a continuous sequence of compressed video frames. When packets are dropped, later data may be unusable until missing information is recovered or a decodable frame arrives. A long recovery interval appears in the headset as a pause rather than a normal, evenly paced frame stream.

Steam Support identifies highly variable network time as a common companion to video stuttering or freezing. In its performance graph, large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate that variability. That graph cannot prove the exact 300 ms bug is present, but it helps distinguish a network-timing problem from a crash or rendering failure.
How can I tell whether my Wi-Fi is causing the stutter?
Use Steam Link’s performance overlay while the problem is happening, then compare the graph with your physical connection. Steam Support provides three configuration paths for enabling it:
- Open Steam Link settings and turn on the performance overlay.
- Alternatively, open Big Picture settings, find the Steam Link or streaming performance options, and enable the overlay there.
- You can also enable the overlay from the Steam overlay while a stream is active.
Watch for cyan network-time spikes at the same moment as the freeze. Next, classify the setup:

- Fully wired: the streaming PC and the Steam Link endpoint use wired network connections. Persistent spikes here point toward congestion, routing or other network conditions rather than radio interference.
- Mixed wired/wireless: one side is wired and the other uses Wi-Fi. The wireless segment is the first place to investigate for variable timing and packet loss.
- Fully wireless: both sides use Wi-Fi. Interference, distance, channel contention and access-point load can all produce the variability shown by the overlay.
If the cyan line stays stable while the image still breaks up, the symptom may not be this packet-loss issue. A game crash, SteamVR startup failure, video corruption or a stuck stream requires a different diagnosis.
What else changed in stable SteamVR 2.18?
The 2.18 notes list several separate streaming and compatibility changes. They should not be treated as evidence that the 300 ms-gap fix works in every environment.
- Streaming reliability improvements.
- Additional fixes for Error 17.
- Fixes for some video corruption, checkerboarding and stuck-stream conditions.
- Improved automatic bitrate selection.
- Tethered Quest streaming over USB, which requires the latest Steam Link app.
The same beta notice also lists a fix for crashes at startup with certain games and a fix for an occasional crash when unblocking previously blocked add-ons in VR settings. Those are distinct crash fixes, not explanations for a network-induced frame gap.

Should I switch from the beta to stable 2.18?
For a reader whose priority is the released wording and fewer experimental changes, stable 2.18 is the clearer baseline: Valve says the targeted gap is fixed there. Beta 2.18.4 may contain the candidate change earlier, but its own note labels the result speculative and supplies no public success measurement.
Before changing branches, reproduce the symptom with the overlay visible and record whether network-time spikes coincide with it. That evidence is more useful than replacing a headset, graphics card or cable without first establishing a network correlation; Valve’s notes do not claim that any of those hardware swaps resolves this bug.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the 300 ms gap continues?
- Confirm the installed SteamVR branch and version: Beta 2.18.4 and stable 2.18 are not the same evidence point.
- Enable the Steam Link performance overlay and observe the cyan network-time line during a freeze.
- Note whether the setup is fully wired, mixed or fully wireless.
- If spikes coincide with the interruption, investigate packet loss and variable network time before changing unrelated PC or headset hardware.
- If there are no network spikes, check whether the symptom matches one of the separately listed crash, corruption or stuck-stream issues.
Valve’s beta notice says replies to that post are not tracked for bug-reporting purposes, so a reply there should not be treated as a formal support report.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a 300 ms Steam Link interruption at 90 Hz?
A 90 Hz display presents a frame about every 11.1 milliseconds, so 300 milliseconds covers roughly 27 frame intervals. The figure is arithmetic context, not a published Valve measurement of a particular headset or game.
Does the SteamVR 2.18 update guarantee stutter-free wireless VR?
No. Valve limits the fixed wording to some packet-loss situations. Other causes, including unstable network timing without that exact failure, can still produce freezes or dropped frames.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes USB Quest streaming use the same fix?
USB tethering is listed as a separate 2.18 change and requires the latest Steam Link app. The release notes do not say that USB mode proves or extends the packet-loss frame-gap fix.
Can I use the Steam Link overlay to identify packet loss directly?
The overlay exposes network-time behavior; large cyan spikes indicate highly variable timing and often accompany stutter or freezing. It does not by itself identify the exact lost packets or confirm Valve’s specific 300 ms defect.
