The headline refers to a real Valve promotion announced on January 21, 2020. It let Steam users play several Half-Life games at no cost until Half-Life: Alyx launched on March 23, 2020. It was temporary access, not a permanent giveaway.
As of the official Steam listings observed on August 18, 2026, the main Half-Life games are paid products. You can still play them legitimately through Steam, but old instructions promising a free unlock no longer apply.

Valve’s January 21, 2020 announcement said the Half-Life series would be free to play for Steam users until the release of Half-Life: Alyx. The announcement directly linked these four games:

- Half-Life
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2: Episode One
- Half-Life 2: Episode Two
The wording matters. These games were available to play temporarily; the promotion did not give every player a permanent license. When Half-Life: Alyx launched on March 23, 2020, the special access period ended.
Was the entire Half-Life catalog free?
Valve used broad “Half-Life series” language, but the original announcement specifically linked the four principal games above. It is therefore safer not to assume that every Half-Life-branded product received identical treatment.

Why some people remember Half-Life 2 as free to own
Valve also ran a separate Half-Life 2 20th-anniversary promotion in 2024. That event made Half-Life 2 free to own for users who claimed it before November 18, 2024, at 10 a.m. Pacific time. It did not make the entire franchise permanently free, and it cannot be used to claim the expired 2020 promotion retroactively.

How the original free access worked
These were the historical steps during the 2020 event:

- Over 15 hours of award-winning single player gaming.
- Battle online with Half-Life 2: Deathmatch – included for no additional charge.
- Create or sign in to a Steam account.
- Install the Steam client from Valve’s official Steam site.
- Open Valve’s “Play Now For Free” announcement.
- Open the links for the listed Half-Life games.
- Add or install the games through Steam.
- Play before the promotion ended with the launch of Half-Life: Alyx on March 23, 2020.
Those instructions are now historical. Visiting the same product pages today should normally show a purchase option unless the game is already attached to your Steam account or is temporarily included in another official promotion.
How to play Half-Life now
- Install Steam from store.steampowered.com and sign in.
- Search for the specific Half-Life game you want.
- Read that title’s system requirements, especially if you use macOS.
- Buy the individual game or a suitable bundle.
- Install it from your Steam Library.
Steam prices and bundle contents change by country, currency, tax, sale, and account region. Prices below were observed on Steam on August 18, 2026, and should not be treated as guaranteed current prices:
- Half-Life: $9.99.

Which purchase makes sense?
Buy an individual game
This is the simplest option if you only want Half-Life or Half-Life 2, already own some of the catalog, or need to check compatibility one title at a time.
Choose The Orange Box
The Orange Box is aimed at players who want the Half-Life 2 storyline alongside other Valve games. Its listed contents include Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, Portal, and Team Fortress 2.

Choose the Half-Life Complete bundle
The Half-Life Complete bundle listing includes Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 1: Source.
This is the broader classic-catalog option, but remember that Half-Life 1: Source is a separate version from the original Half-Life. The bundle also does not mean every Half-Life-branded product, particularly Half-Life: Alyx, is included.

Lost Coast is also listed with the broader package or its extras, depending on Steam’s presentation. The episodes can be accessed from the Half-Life 2 main menu, so someone seeking Gordon Freeman’s core Half-Life 2 storyline may not need to purchase each episode separately.

Mac support varies by game and operating-system version. Do not treat the old “PC and Mac” wording in a 2020 headline as a guarantee of compatibility with a modern Mac.
The Steam page for Half-Life still displays legacy macOS requirements, including OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3. That does not establish that the game runs correctly on current macOS releases or Apple Silicon Macs.
The current Half-Life 2 listing surfaced with Windows requirements rather than a current macOS requirement set. Steam client support and game support are separate issues: a Mac may be able to install Steam without a particular game being supported on its current operating system.

Before buying on macOS:
- Open the individual game page rather than relying only on a bundle page.
- Check the listed operating system and minimum version.
- Compare that requirement with your specific macOS release and Mac hardware.
- Do not assume Intel-era Mac support means Apple Silicon support.
- Remember that different games in the same bundle can have different platform support.
If a title is unavailable or fails to launch, use Steam’s support and refund policies rather than unauthorized downloads.
What about Half-Life: Alyx?
Half-Life: Alyx is a separate VR game and should not be presented as part of the ordinary free PC/Mac catalog offer. Valve describes it as requiring a SteamVR-compatible system on its official VR page. It is a prequel set before Half-Life 2.
Qualifying SteamVR hardware owners, including Valve Index controller owners under Valve’s stated terms, may have received the game free with that hardware. That is different from a general giveaway. Readers without VR equipment should not expect to play Alyx as a normal flat-screen Mac game.
