Valve announced the Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame together on November 12, 2025. What first looked like a surprise reveal has since become a broader, uneven SteamOS hardware strategy: the Steam Controller is shipping through reservations, Steam Machine reservations are open in the United States, and Steam Frame still lacks a dependable final price and general-release date in the official information available as of August 18, 2026.
The lineup matters because Valve is no longer pursuing only a handheld. It is extending SteamOS from the portable Steam Deck into the living room, while also targeting standalone and PC-connected virtual reality.

The Steam Machine is a small, mains-powered computer designed to put a SteamOS interface on a television. Its announced hardware includes a six-core AMD Zen 4 processor, semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units, 16GB of system memory and 8GB of video memory. Storage comes in 512GB and 2TB configurations. Connectivity includes HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort, USB-C, additional USB ports and microSD support. The reported specifications were detailed in PC Gamer’s launch coverage.

- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Valve has claimed that the Steam Machine delivers approximately six times the performance of Steam Deck. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified benchmark or a universal six-times FPS guarantee. Results will vary with the game, resolution, graphics settings, upscaling and SteamOS compatibility.
The important distinction is positioning. Valve describes the Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming rather than a closed console. It does not lock users into a console-style subscription ecosystem or a fixed catalogue. That brings the breadth of the Steam and PC ecosystem, but also its complications: Proton translation, anti-cheat support, third-party launchers and individual game compatibility still matter.
A Steam Machine can provide a console-like interface and living-room convenience. It is not automatically as predictable as a PlayStation or Xbox. Buyers should check the compatibility of the games they actually play instead of assuming that every Steam title will behave perfectly.
Steam Machine pricing and reservations
Valve’s U.S. pricing is considerably higher than many readers expected from a console-like SteamOS device:
| Configuration | U.S. price |
|---|---|
| 512GB Steam Machine | $1,049 |
| 512GB with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| 2TB Steam Machine | $1,349 |
| 2TB with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
The 2TB model and its bundle include additional red fabric and solid walnut faceplates. Valve attributed the pricing and limited initial supply primarily to increased memory and storage costs in its Steam Hardware announcements. That explains Valve’s position, but it does not remove the central value question: at $1,049 before a controller, the Steam Machine competes with gaming PCs and premium console setups rather than mainstream consoles.

Valve used a randomized reservation-signup period to reduce the advantage of bots and avoid a first-come, first-served rush. Customers generally needed a Steam account in good standing and a qualifying previous Steam purchase. After the initial allocation, later customers were placed at the back of the waitlist. Valve has estimated that the reservation queue should be worked through by the end of 2026, but that is not a guaranteed delivery promise. See the reservation update for the current queue information.
The Steam Controller gets a more familiar layout
The second-generation Steam Controller revisits Valve’s most distinctive controller idea while addressing the first model’s biggest barrier to mainstream use. It combines two TMR thumbsticks with two trackpads, a gyroscope, capacitive sensing, Bluetooth and a dedicated 2.4GHz wireless connection through an included puck. It can also operate over USB-C. Valve states that battery life exceeds 35 hours, and the puck can connect up to four controllers while also functioning as a charger. These are announced or manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent test results.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The addition of two conventional sticks is significant. The original Steam Controller asked players to accept trackpads in places where they expected familiar analogue sticks. The new design keeps the trackpads and gyro for mouse-like control, strategy games, simulations and motion-assisted aiming, but gives ordinary gamepad users a more immediately recognizable starting point.
That flexibility comes with a learning curve. The controller’s strongest feature is Steam Input, which can map its unusual hardware to games that were never designed for it. Players who enjoy configuring layouts—or who need a controller for mouse-heavy PC games—may find it unusually capable. Those seeking a plug-and-play Xbox-style controller may prefer a conventional alternative.
Shipping has begun, but demand exceeded Valve’s initial expectations. Valve is continuing to accept reservations and has shown estimated order windows such as September 2026, December 2026 and 2027. These are estimates rather than guaranteed delivery dates. The Steam Hardware archive is the appropriate place to check for changing reservation information.
Steam Frame targets both standalone and wireless PC VR
Steam Frame is designed to work in two modes. As a standalone headset, it runs compatible software on its own Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform. As a PC-connected headset, it uses a dedicated wireless 6GHz adapter to access higher-fidelity PC VR from a gaming computer.
Reported specifications include pancake optics, 2,160 × 2,160 resolution, inside-out tracking, up to a 110-degree field of view, 16GB of RAM, 256GB or 1TB of storage, eye tracking and a headset weight of 435 grams. Its controllers use conventional gamepad-style inputs. Valve has also described a modular construction and an expansion port for possible future accessories.
That expansion port should not be treated as a promise of color passthrough or mixed-reality functionality. It creates possible future uses, but no particular accessory or passthrough feature should be assumed to ship with the headset.
Steam Frame’s two modes also have different limitations. Standalone play depends on whether a game has a suitable build and whether the headset’s mobile hardware can run it. PC VR depends on the user’s computer, wireless environment, adapter and supported software. “Steam access” does not mean that every Steam game runs natively on the headset.
As of August 18, 2026, Valve has promoted Steam Frame as a 2026 product and has expanded developer compatibility work, including Frame Verified and Machine Verified programs through Steamworks announcements. However, the available official material does not establish a dependable final consumer price or general-release date. Any earlier “summer” target should be treated as provisional unless Valve confirms it in a newer product announcement.

Why this is a full-circle moment for Valve
“Full circle” is editorial framing rather than a formal Valve slogan, but it fits the company’s hardware history.
First, Steam Machine is a return to the living room. Valve’s earlier Steam Machine push involved a range of third-party systems intended to bring SteamOS to televisions. The new product is different: it is a single, internally designed Valve system. Valve is revisiting the same broad ambition with the benefit of lessons learned from building and supporting Steam Deck.
Second, the Steam Controller returns in spirit. Trackpads and gyro input remain central, but the two thumbsticks make the design less alien to conventional gamepad players.
Third, Steam Deck gives the new strategy a stronger software and interface foundation than Valve had during its first living-room attempt. Deck demonstrated that a Linux-based SteamOS experience could be presented as a focused gaming appliance, while also exposing the practical importance of compatibility ratings, Proton support and developer cooperation.

That is an analysis of the lineup, not a claim that Valve has announced a closed console ecosystem.

Steam Machine versus Steam Deck
| Steam Deck | Steam Machine | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Portable handheld | Fixed living-room PC |
| Controls | Built-in screen and controls | Requires a display and external controller |
| Power | Battery-dependent | Mains-powered |
| Performance | Lower-power handheld design | Higher-performance desktop-style design |
| Best use | Travel and handheld play | Television gaming and more demanding titles |
| Purchase model | All-in-one portable system | Modular PC-style setup |
The Steam Machine is therefore not a straightforward Deck replacement. Deck remains the better fit for portable play and the lower-cost way into SteamOS. Steam Machine is aimed at people who want a permanent television setup and more performance at home.
Who should consider each device?
Steam Machine
It makes the most sense for Steam users who want a TV-first experience without building a small-form-factor PC, and for Deck owners who want a more powerful home system. It is a weaker fit for buyers expecting a $400–$600 console, users who need maximum Windows compatibility, or enthusiasts comfortable building a faster PC for similar money.
Steam Controller
Consider it if you play from the couch, already use Steam Input, enjoy gyro aiming or need better control for strategy and simulation games. Choose a conventional controller instead if you want familiar controls with minimal configuration or primarily play outside Steam.
Steam Frame
Steam Frame is aimed at enthusiasts interested in wireless PC VR and a headset that can also operate independently. It is difficult to recommend as a purchase until Valve confirms the final price, release timing, stock and launch software support. Buyers requiring full-color passthrough or mixed reality should not infer those features from the expansion port.
Alternatives worth considering
- Steam Deck is the more practical choice for portable SteamOS gaming and a lower-cost entry point.
- A Windows gaming PC or mini-PC offers broader software compatibility and upgrade flexibility, though usually with less of Steam Machine’s turnkey interface.
- PlayStation and Xbox provide simpler closed-console experiences and stronger platform-level guarantees, but neither replaces access to the native Steam library.
- Meta Quest offers a more established standalone VR and mixed-reality ecosystem, while Steam Frame is pursuing tighter Steam and PC VR integration.
What the announcement means now
Valve’s three-device reveal was surprising because it announced a coordinated hardware push rather than another Steam Deck accessory. The subsequent rollout has made the strategy more complicated: the controller is real and shipping, but queues can stretch into 2027; Steam Machine reservations are open, but its pricing is premium; and Steam Frame remains the least certain product in the lineup.
The success of this second living-room and VR push will depend less on the surprise announcement than on four practical questions: how quickly Valve can supply the hardware, how well SteamOS handles difficult PC games, whether the prices feel justified against complete PC alternatives, and how much developer support arrives for Machine Verified and Frame Verified software.
