Windows 10 supports variable refresh rate (VRR) for compatible gaming monitors, but the feature only appears when your Windows version, graphics driver, GPU, monitor and game presentation mode meet Microsoft’s conditions. Update to Windows 10 version 1903 or later, select the monitor’s intended refresh rate, enable Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC in the monitor and graphics control panel, then turn on Windows’ Variable refresh rate option under Settings > System > Display > Graphics. VRR can reduce visible tearing and uneven motion by allowing the display’s refresh timing to follow frame delivery. It does not increase a game’s frame rate, and the Windows switch is an addition to vendor settings rather than a replacement for them.
What does variable refresh rate do in Windows 10?
Traditional displays refresh on a fixed schedule such as 60, 144 or 165 times per second. If a game presents a new frame halfway through that schedule, the display can show portions of two frames at once. That split is visible as tearing. If the game’s frame delivery does not line up with the fixed cadence, motion can also look uneven.

VRR changes the timing of each refresh within the monitor’s supported range. The display waits for the next completed frame instead of refreshing only at a fixed interval. FreeSync, G-SYNC and the broader Adaptive-Sync standard are vendor implementations of this approach. When the game, driver and monitor cooperate, camera pans and moving objects look more consistent at fluctuating frame rates.
VRR is a synchronization feature, not a performance boost. It cannot create frames, raise a GPU’s rendering speed or guarantee a particular latency reduction. The official Windows and vendor material establishes the feature’s requirements and presentation behavior, but does not provide an independent FPS, latency or stutter benchmark for a specific game.

Does Windows 10 support FreeSync and G-SYNC?
Yes. Windows 10 added an operating-system VRR switch with version 1903. Microsoft describes that switch as an augmentation to the G-SYNC, FreeSync and Adaptive-Sync settings supplied by the monitor and GPU vendor. You still need to configure those vendor controls when they are available.
Microsoft’s DirectX documentation also describes VRR display support beginning with the Anniversary Update or KB3156421 and explains how Direct3D 11 and Direct3D 12 applications use flip-model swap effects and tearing flags. The later Windows 10 toggle is specifically intended to extend VRR to supported DirectX 11 fullscreen games that do not implement VRR themselves. It is not a universal override for every game, graphics API or window mode.
Microsoft DirectX Program Manager Daniel Schlegel described the change this way: “With Windows Version 1903, we have added a new toggle in Graphics Settings for variable refresh rate.”
What do I need before enabling VRR?
Check every prerequisite before troubleshooting the switch. If one is absent, Windows hides the option rather than displaying a disabled control.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Windows version | Windows 10 version 1903 or later | The OS-level Variable refresh rate control was introduced in version 1903. |
| Monitor | A display supporting G-SYNC, FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync | The panel must be able to alter its refresh timing. |
| Graphics driver | A driver exposing WDDM 2.6-or-newer support for the feature | Windows uses the driver to communicate VRR capability. |
| Monitor configuration | Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC enabled in the monitor’s on-screen menu when required | Many displays ship with synchronization disabled until you turn it on. |
| GPU control panel | The corresponding vendor VRR option enabled when offered | The Windows switch does not replace vendor control-panel settings. |
| Game presentation | A supported fullscreen or application path | The Windows 10 toggle’s documented extension targets DirectX 11 fullscreen games. |
Microsoft’s display guidance says adaptive synchronization in Windows 10 version 1903 and later is supported for games running fullscreen on supported hardware. A game can therefore meet the hardware requirements and still behave differently in borderless or windowed mode.
How do I turn on variable refresh rate for games in Windows 10?
Use the following sequence. Selecting a high refresh rate is necessary for the desktop mode you want, but that selection alone does not prove that VRR is active.

- Confirm Windows and driver support. Open Windows Settings and check that the PC is running Windows 10 version 1903 or newer. Confirm that the installed graphics driver exposes WDDM 2.6-or-newer VRR support.
- Choose the monitor and refresh rate. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings. Select the gaming monitor if more than one display is connected, then choose the refresh rate you intend to use. Windows only lists rates reported by that display.
- Enable synchronization on the display. Open the monitor’s on-screen menu and turn on its Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC setting, using the name supplied by the manufacturer.
- Enable the graphics-vendor setting. Open the GPU vendor control panel and enable the matching FreeSync or G-SYNC feature if the control is present. Microsoft explicitly says the Windows option augments these controls.
- Open Windows graphics settings. Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics. On hardware that meets all prerequisites, Windows shows a Variable refresh rate option. It is disabled by default when available.
- Turn on Variable refresh rate. Enable the switch, then launch the target game in the supported fullscreen mode. Test one game at a time so you can distinguish a system setting from a title-specific presentation issue.
If the option does not appear at step five, do not substitute a high fixed refresh rate and assume the job is complete. Return to the prerequisite table and check the Windows build, monitor capability and setting, GPU model and driver WDDM level.
Why is the VRR option missing in Windows 10?
Microsoft says the slider is hidden whenever any listed prerequisite is missing. The most common causes are an older Windows build, a monitor without a recognized VRR mode, a disabled monitor setting, an unsupported GPU driver or a driver that does not expose the required WDDM level.
Check the Windows build
Version 1903 is the minimum for the Graphics Settings toggle. If the PC is on an earlier release, the option will not be added by changing a registry value or selecting 144 Hz; install a supported Windows 10 release first.
Check the monitor’s reported capability
Use Advanced display settings to select the exact display you play on. Windows derives the available refresh-rate list from what that monitor reports. If the display exposes only fixed rates, the operating system has no VRR capability to offer.
Check the driver and GPU
The requirement is not simply “a modern graphics card.” The installed driver must expose WDDM 2.6-or-newer support for Windows’ VRR feature. Recheck after a driver change, because a generic or older driver can remove the capability even when the GPU model itself is capable.
Check the monitor menu
Some displays leave Adaptive-Sync or their vendor-branded synchronization mode off at the factory. Enable it in the display’s own menu, then restart the graphics settings page so Windows can re-enumerate the capability.

What should I do if tearing or stutter remains?
Work from the outside in: display, vendor control panel, Windows setting, then game presentation mode.
- Verify the selected display. In Advanced display settings, make sure the monitor connected to the gaming GPU is selected and running at its intended reported rate.
- Recheck vendor controls. G-SYNC and FreeSync remain configured through their respective ecosystems. The Windows toggle cannot correct a disabled or incorrectly scoped vendor setting.
- Check the game’s display mode. The Windows 10 switch is documented for DirectX 11 fullscreen games. A title using borderless or windowed presentation can follow different swap-chain behavior.
- Check whether the game has native VRR support. A game that implements VRR itself may handle presentation differently from one relying on the Windows extension.
- Test with one display. Temporarily disconnect additional monitors or select the gaming panel explicitly. This removes ambiguity about which display is reporting the VRR capability.
A 144 Hz or 165 Hz desktop setting is only a fixed refresh-rate choice. It confirms that the monitor reports that mode; it does not confirm that refresh timing is following the game frame by frame.
Does VRR work in fullscreen, borderless and windowed games?
Not identically. Microsoft’s Windows toggle is described as extending VRR to supported DirectX 11 fullscreen games that lack native VRR implementation. DirectX documentation ties tearing behavior to the application’s swap chain, flip-model presentation and tearing flags, so an application’s API and presentation path matter.
Exclusive fullscreen
This is the clearest match for the Windows 10 toggle’s documented use case. If the monitor, driver and game support the path, Windows can apply the OS-level VRR behavior to a DirectX 11 fullscreen title.
Borderless fullscreen
Borderless mode is still a windowed presentation path even though it fills the screen. Its behavior depends on the game, compositor and swap-chain configuration. Do not assume that a borderless title receives the same treatment as an exclusive fullscreen title.
Windowed mode
Windowed behavior depends on the application’s use of Direct3D and the relevant swap-chain flags. A game may need native VRR support or a compatible presentation model; the Windows toggle is not a guarantee for every windowed application.

How do FreeSync, G-SYNC and Adaptive-Sync differ for Windows 10?
All three describe synchronization between frame presentation and display refresh, but certification and control paths differ. Choose a monitor that matches your GPU ecosystem and verify the supported refresh-rate range rather than relying only on the badge.
| Comparison point | FreeSync ecosystem | G-SYNC ecosystem |
|---|---|---|
| GPU relationship | Primarily associated with Radeon graphics and AMD’s FreeSync certification. | Associated with NVIDIA graphics and G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible displays. |
| Certification statement | AMD says every FreeSync display goes through a certification process and publishes tier specifications. | NVIDIA says G-SYNC Compatible displays are validated for a seamless experience. |
| Windows configuration | Enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync in the monitor and the GPU control panel, then use the Windows switch when available. | Enable G-SYNC in the monitor and NVIDIA control panel, then use the Windows switch when available. |
| Refresh-rate range | Depends on the certified model; check the monitor’s published range. | Depends on the certified model; check the monitor’s published range. |
| Game compatibility | Depends on the game’s native support or its supported fullscreen presentation. | Depends on the game’s native support or its supported fullscreen presentation. |
AMD reported more than 4,000 certified displays in November 2023. That ecosystem count describes certified models, not a promise that every model has the same minimum or maximum VRR rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What monitor should I buy for VRR on Windows 10?
Start with the GPU you already use, then verify certification and the actual operating range. A FreeSync display is a direct fit for readers using Radeon graphics, while NVIDIA users should look for a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display. The monitor must also expose Adaptive-Sync or the relevant vendor mode in its on-screen menu.
AMD’s certified examples include the Alienware AW3423DWF, Acer XV252Q F and ASUS ROG Swift PG38UQ. These examples demonstrate that certification spans different sizes and refresh targets; they do not establish identical VRR ranges or identical performance.

- Confirm the game mode you use: if you rely on borderless or windowed play, look for native game support rather than assuming the fullscreen toggle will carry over.
Does enabling VRR improve FPS or reduce input lag?
VRR does not raise FPS. Its purpose is to coordinate display refresh with frames the GPU has already rendered, reducing the visual mismatch that causes tearing and uneven motion. The exact latency and smoothness result depends on the game’s frame-time behavior, the monitor’s supported range and the presentation path.
There is no official independent benchmark in the available material that assigns a universal FPS gain, latency reduction or stutter reduction to Windows 10 VRR. Treat claims of a fixed percentage improvement as test-specific unless they identify the game, hardware, settings and measurement method.

Is Windows 10 VRR still safe to use after support ended?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free updates, technical assistance and security fixes through Windows Update ended after that date. VRR may continue to function on compatible hardware, but using an unsupported operating system carries security and driver-compatibility risks separate from the display feature.
If the gaming PC remains on Windows 10, keep the display and driver configuration documented and understand that future driver releases or game updates may not preserve the same behavior. The VRR steps above describe the Windows 10 feature; they do not restore operating-system support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enable VRR without changing my monitor’s refresh rate?
You can leave the desktop at a reported fixed rate, but VRR still operates only within the monitor’s supported range. Choosing the intended maximum rate in Advanced display settings makes the display mode explicit; it does not itself activate synchronization.
Will every DirectX 12 game use the Windows 10 VRR switch?
No universal guarantee exists. Microsoft’s toggle is specifically described for supported DirectX 11 fullscreen games, while Direct3D 12 titles depend on their own flip-model swap-chain and presentation implementation.
Why does my monitor show 165 Hz but still tear?
The 165 Hz value is a fixed mode reported by the display. Tearing can remain if the monitor’s sync mode or vendor control-panel setting is off, or if the game is using a presentation path outside the Windows toggle’s documented fullscreen scenario.
Does VRR work on a monitor that has only Adaptive-Sync branding?
Adaptive-Sync is one of the supported monitor capability labels. Windows still requires a compatible GPU driver and the monitor’s synchronization feature to be enabled, and the game must use a supported presentation path.
