vdswmi.dll Missing: Repair the Windows Storage Provider Safely

Length13 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, write down:

  • Which program shows the error: Disk Management, backup software, a storage utility, a management tool, or an unrelated application.
  • The exact wording: “vdswmi.dll was not found,” “could not be loaded,” “missing from your computer,” or “entry point not found.”
  • When it began: after Windows Update, disk cleanup, antivirus activity, an interrupted repair, or installation of another application.
  • Your Windows architecture: open Settings → System → About and check System type.
  • Whether Windows has other problems: test Disk Management, storage-related tools, and Windows Settings.

The safest first response is to repair Windows itself, not to download vdswmi.dll from a DLL website.

What vdswmi.dll is

vdswmi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its description is WMI Provider for VDS, and its publisher should be Microsoft Corporation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The file connects Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI, with the Virtual Disk Service, or VDS. In practical terms, it helps software obtain storage-related information through WMI, including information about volumes and disks. The WMI class Win32_Volume is associated with this provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft describes WMI providers as components commonly installed under the WMI directory. The expected location for this file is:

%SystemRoot%System32wbemvdswmi.dll

On a typical Windows installation, that expands to:

C:WindowsSystem32wbemvdswmi.dll

VDS is an older Windows storage-management interface. Microsoft superseded its COM interface with the Windows Storage Management API beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, but the provider can remain present for compatibility with software that still uses the older interface.

This is not a Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing those packages is not the normal solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the file is legitimate

A file named vdswmi.dll is not automatically safe just because the name is correct. Malware can use the same filename. Check its path, signature, and properties before restoring a quarantined copy or allowing an unusual file to run.

Check the location

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Click the address bar.
  3. Enter:

text
%SystemRoot%System32wbem

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Look for vdswmi.dll.

A copy in the WMI directory is consistent with the expected Windows component. A copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, a user profile, or an application’s random subfolder needs further investigation.

Do not delete a suspicious copy before recording its path and scanning it. If Windows or an application is using that copy, removal can make diagnosis harder.

Check the publisher and description

Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Details tab. The information should identify a Microsoft Windows component, with the description WMI Provider for VDS and Microsoft as the company or publisher.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the Digital Signatures tab. A normal Windows copy should have a valid Microsoft signature. Select the signature, click Details, and check whether Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.

You can also inspect the signature from an elevated PowerShell window:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32wbemvdswmi.dll"

The result should show a valid signature and Microsoft as the signer. If the file is absent, the command cannot verify it. If the signature is invalid or the file is located somewhere unexpected, run a full Windows Security scan rather than copying a replacement from the internet.

Do not assume the version or size

Reported historical Windows files include 32-bit versions such as 6.3.9600.16384, 6.2.9200.16384, and 6.1.7600.16385. These are not universal current versions. Windows servicing can provide later builds, and the correct version depends on the installed Windows image.

To view the installed file’s version, if it exists, run:

(Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32wbemvdswmi.dll").VersionInfo |
  Select-Object FileVersion, ProductVersion, FileDescription, CompanyName

Do not use a historical version, file size, or hash as proof that a downloaded copy belongs on your computer.

Understand System32 and SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory. It does not mean “the directory for 32-bit files.”

SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components used through Windows compatibility mechanisms. Windows may maintain architecture-specific copies or redirections for some components, but you should not assume that every installation has two usable copies of vdswmi.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The expected path for this provider remains:

%SystemRoot%System32wbemvdswmi.dll

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not copy a Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 file into a newer Windows installation. Windows servicing selects the correct component for the installed image.

What the exact error usually indicates

“vdswmi.dll was not found” or “is missing”

This generally means that the calling program could not find the file it expected, or Windows could not provide the component. If the file is absent from %SystemRoot%System32wbem, damaged Windows system files or a damaged component store are strong possibilities.

It can also be an application-specific problem. If only one older application fails while Windows storage tools work normally, repair that application after checking Windows.

“vdswmi.dll could not be loaded”

A load failure does not prove that the file is missing. The file may be corrupt, blocked, incompatible, or dependent on another damaged component. WMI registration or repository problems can also produce storage-management failures without a defective DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The procedure entry point could not be located”

This usually points to a version mismatch or an incompatible dependent component. Copying another vdswmi.dll over the installed one can make this worse. Use Windows servicing and identify which program is loading the file.

WMI Provider Host uses high CPU

A WMI Provider Host problem that mentions VDS does not automatically mean vdswmi.dll is defective. Another application may be issuing problematic or repeated WMI storage queries. Note which program was active when the CPU problem began and diagnose the WMI client separately.

Fix 1: Install updates, then run DISM and SFC

This is the most appropriate first repair for a missing or damaged Windows component.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker when protected Windows files are missing or corrupted. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to restore system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install pending updates

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on a restart.
  6. Test the program again.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.

DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. When it reports that the source files could not be found, Windows Update or the component store may also be damaged. Do not substitute a random DLL. Use a matching Windows installation image or another approved repair source with /Source and /LimitAccess, following Microsoft’s repair guidance for the exact Windows build.

Run SFC after DISM

After DISM completes successfully, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the original program.

The result matters:

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file integrity problem. Continue with the application and WMI checks below.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair changed protected files. Restart before testing.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the repair is incomplete. Run DISM again, inspect the SFC log, and consider a matching repair source.
  • “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation” can indicate servicing, disk, or operating-environment problems. Restart and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.

You can extract SFC-related entries from the CBS log with:

If you prefer not to spend time hunting through Windows servicing results and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct first repair for this Microsoft component.

Fix 2: Repair the program that displays the message

If Windows works normally and only one program reports vdswmi.dll, the application may be damaged or may be requesting the provider incorrectly.

Repair an installed Windows application

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Click the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Click Repair.
  7. Start the program again.

If Repair does not exist or does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it can remove the program’s settings or local data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs → Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Look for Change, Repair, or a similar maintenance option.
  5. Complete the vendor’s repair wizard.
  6. Restart Windows and retest.

Repair a game or specialist utility

Use the program’s own Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function. These tools compare the application’s installed files with its expected package and restore the program’s files without mixing them with Windows system files.

If verification fails, uninstall and reinstall the affected application from its official source. Back up saved data, profiles, templates, or licenses first. Reinstalling that specific program is the definitive fix when its private files are damaged. It is not a reason to download vdswmi.dll into the application folder.

If reinstalling the application brings the error back immediately, check whether the program is compatible with your Windows installation and whether security software is removing one of its files.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine Windows file after a false positive or after detecting tampering around it.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Click Protection history.
  6. Look for a detection involving vdswmi.dll.
  7. Expand the entry and record the detected path, detection name, and action taken.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:

  • The path is the genuine Windows WMI directory.
  • The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
  • The detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
  • Windows Security or your security vendor provides a clear reason to restore it.

If the detection is active or the signature is invalid, do not restore the file. Run a full scan and follow the security product’s remediation instructions. Microsoft warns that a restored threat may be detected again.

If a genuine signed file is repeatedly quarantined, update Windows Security, record the detection details, and contact the security vendor or Microsoft support. Repeatedly restoring the file without investigating the detection is unsafe.

Fix 4: Check WMI-specific failures

Some users see a startup message, missing storage data, or WMI Provider Host errors rather than a simple missing-file dialog. That points toward WMI registration, the WMI repository, a dependent DLL, or an application making bad queries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for symptoms such as:

  • Disk Management does not display volume information correctly.
  • A backup or storage-management application reports WMI errors.
  • Management software cannot enumerate disks or volumes.
  • Event Viewer records repeated WMI provider failures.
  • The file exists in the correct directory and has a valid Microsoft signature, but WMI operations still fail.

Do not randomly unregister vdswmi.dll, delete the WMI repository, or recompile system MOF files. WMI providers require both COM registration and WMI provider or MOF registration. These are separate operations, and an incorrect command can damage other management providers.

Microsoft or the affected software vendor may provide a specific provider re-registration procedure. Use that procedure only when it names your Windows version and symptom.

For a basic WMI repository check, an administrator can run:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

Treat the result as a diagnostic clue, not permission to rebuild the repository immediately. If it reports inconsistency, collect the exact message and relevant Event Viewer entries before taking recovery action.

Fix 5: Investigate dependent components and architecture

A file can be in the right directory and still fail because another component is damaged or the calling application is loading the wrong architecture.

Confirm the following:

  1. Open the file’s Properties and check the Digital Signatures tab.
  2. Confirm the path is under %SystemRoot%System32wbem.
  3. Check the file version without treating old version listings as universal.
  4. Note whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Check whether the error appears only in that application or across Windows.
  6. Avoid copying files between Windows computers.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use Windows redirection and compatibility layers. That does not mean you should manually place a second copy in SysWOW64. Let Windows and the application installer select the appropriate component.

If the message says an entry point is missing, focus on version compatibility and dependent components. If it says the file is missing, focus first on DISM, SFC, quarantine, and application repair.

Fix 6: Update storage and chipset drivers only when the symptoms support it

Driver updates are not a standard fix for a missing protected Windows provider. They become relevant when Device Manager shows a storage, controller, chipset, or virtual-disk device error, or when the problem began after a hardware or driver change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Storage controllers, Disk drives, and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, if present.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers only when an update is appropriate.
  9. Restart Windows and retest.

For a recently installed driver, use Roll Back Driver if that button is available and the timing clearly matches the failure. Do not remove storage-controller drivers casually, because an incorrect removal can prevent Windows from starting.

Driver hunting across multiple hardware vendors can involve guessing which of dozens of installed drivers is stale and repeating repairs without a clear change. Outbyte Driver Updater can show driver findings in a scan; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it should not replace DISM/SFC or the official driver source for a confirmed hardware problem.

Why you should not download vdswmi.dll

Do not download an isolated vdswmi.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory.

That approach can fail because:

  • The DLL may contain malware or tampering.
  • The version may belong to a different Windows release.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • The file may be unsigned or have altered metadata.
  • The underlying component store may remain damaged.
  • WMI provider and MOF registration may still be missing.
  • The application may actually be failing because of a dependent component.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery or installation media that matches your system, and the official installer for the affected application. There is no identified Microsoft redistributable or standalone official end-user download for vdswmi.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What to do if DISM and SFC cannot repair it

Work through these options in order:

  1. Restart and run Windows Update again.
  2. Retry DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. If DISM cannot find source files, use a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess.
  4. Review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log for the file SFC could not repair.
  5. Check Windows Security quarantine and verify the Microsoft signature.
  6. Repair or reinstall the application if only one program is affected.
  7. Use System Restore only if a suitable restore point predates the problem.
  8. If servicing still fails, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation.

Back up important documents before recovery or an in-place repair. Do not use registry cleaners or manually replace protected Windows files as a substitute for servicing.

FAQ

Is vdswmi.dll malware?

No. The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component named WMI Provider for VDS. A copy outside the normal WMI directory, or one without a valid Microsoft signature, may be unsafe and should be scanned.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No, not specifically for this file. vdswmi.dll belongs to Windows and is associated with WMI and the Virtual Disk Service. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.

Should I run regsvr32 vdswmi.dll?

Not as a routine fix. regsvr32 handles DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point, while WMI providers also require provider and MOF registration. Use regsvr32 or provider re-registration only when a Microsoft or application-vendor procedure specifically instructs it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every 64-bit Windows installation have copies in both System32 and SysWOW64?

Do not assume that. System32 is the native system directory on 64-bit Windows, and SysWOW64 serves 32-bit compatibility components. Use the Windows-supplied file in its expected WMI location instead of copying between directories.

Why does only one application fail?

The application may be damaged, incompatible, or requesting WMI incorrectly. Repair or reinstall that application, and use its built-in file verification function when available.

What if the file exists but Windows still reports an error?

Check its signature and location, then consider a mismatched version, dependent DLL, WMI registration, repository damage, or an application-specific failure. A present file is not proof that the provider is healthy.

When should I reinstall Windows?

Only after Windows Update, DISM, SFC, application repair, security checks, and an appropriate recovery source have failed. Back up important data first, then use an in-place repair or Windows recovery method rather than an unofficial DLL replacement.
