You may see “The program can’t start because wtsapi32.dll is missing from your computer” or “WTSAPI32.dll was not found.” A wtsapi32.dll error usually concerns a damaged Windows component, a failed application installation, or an incorrect local DLL rather than a missing Visual C++ package.
The 60-second answer
wtsapi32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL. It implements the Remote Desktop Services API, formerly called the Terminal Services API, which applications can use for session information, terminal-server administration, virtual channels, and related functions.

The normal repair path is:
- If several programs or Windows itself are affected, open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
- If only one application fails while Windows works normally, repair or reinstall that application instead.
- Do not download
wtsapi32.dllfrom a random DLL website or copy an unverified file intoSystem32.
Microsoft documents the Remote Desktop Services API, including the Wtsapi32.dll library and its wtsapi32.h header.
What is wtsapi32.dll?
wtsapi32.dll is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Its description may appear as “Windows Terminal Server SDK APIs.” Microsoft applications and third-party programs can call functions exported by this DLL to work with Remote Desktop Services and Windows sessions.

The file is normally stored under:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use Windows WOW64 file-system redirection. In normal circumstances:
System32contains native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64contains the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
This naming is confusing, but do not move files between these folders. Microsoft explains the behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
The exact version and file size are not universal. They vary with the Windows release, architecture, installed language components, and servicing updates. A file being present does not prove that it is healthy, genuine, or the correct architecture.

Error messages and what they suggest
Examples include:
- “The program can’t start because wtsapi32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “WTSAPI32.dll was not found.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly because wtsapi32.dll was not found.”
- “wtsapi32.dll could not be loaded.”
- “Module was not found.”
- “C:WindowsSystem32WTSAPI32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Bad Image,” sometimes with status
0xc000012f.
The wording depends on the Windows version, the application that is starting, and the loader failure. A missing-file message can mean the file is absent, but it can also mean Windows rejected the file because it is damaged, the wrong architecture, or being loaded from an unexpected application folder.
If the message names C:WindowsSystem32WTSAPI32.dll, the problem is more likely to involve Windows system-file corruption or servicing. Microsoft has documented Bad Image cases involving WTSAPI32.dll.
First determine the scope of the failure
Before changing anything, establish whether the problem affects Windows broadly or one program.
If several applications fail
If multiple programs show DLL errors, Windows tools behave strangely, or the message points to System32, treat this as a Windows component problem. Start with DISM and SFC.

If the problem began after a change
Note what happened immediately before the error:
- A Windows update
- Installation or removal of an application
- Disk cleanup
- Antivirus detection or quarantine
- A malware incident
- A power failure or storage problem
- A manually copied DLL
- Installation of old software
The timing helps identify the correct repair, but it does not prove a single cause.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of wtsapi32.dll.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
When DISM completes successfully, continue with SFC:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands finish.
Interpret the SFC result
SFC commonly reports one of these outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. Windows did not find protected-file corruption. If one application still fails, repair that application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If the issue remains, inspect the CBS log or use a matching Windows repair source.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. Restart and try again. If necessary, run the scan from Windows Recovery Environment.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a valid repair source that closely matches the installed Windows version. Do not invent a path or use an unrelated Windows image.
Running these commands manually can involve waiting through several stages and determining which result actually changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for fixing this DLL.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete Windows servicing operation can produce a “Bad Image” error or leave protected files in an inconsistent state.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check Windows Update again after restarting.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not assume that uninstalling updates is automatically the answer. First complete pending updates and run DISM and SFC. If the update left Windows damaged, the repair-reinstall option may be more appropriate.

Fix 3: Use Windows 11 repair reinstall
Supported Windows 11 systems may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.

- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart and test the affected program.
Microsoft says this option repairs system files and components. It may be unavailable on older builds, managed computers, or some editions.
If this option is not available and Windows remains damaged, consider System Restore or a Windows repair installation from official Microsoft installation media. Back up important files before major recovery work.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Use this path when only one program fails and Windows itself appears healthy.
Repair a Microsoft Store or supported application
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, use Reset if it is offered. Reset can remove application data, so review the warning first.
Repair traditional desktop software
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
For games or software managed by a launcher, use its built-in verify, repair, or scan-files function where available. If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall from the original publisher or official launcher.
Do not copy a system version of wtsapi32.dll into the application directory unless the application vendor specifically instructs you to do so. A program may be looking for an app-local DLL with a different dependency set, and manual copying can make the loader error worse.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine carefully
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a file after a detection. A genuine Windows file should not automatically be restored merely because an application stopped working.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect the detection name, original file path, and action taken.
Restore or allow a file only after confirming that:
- The original path is a normal Windows system location.
- The detection is identified as a false positive.
- The file has not been replaced or modified by suspicious software.
- A trusted security scan does not report a broader infection.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can reintroduce malware. If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined and run a full or offline scan before attempting repair.
Fix 6: Check the architecture and file location
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit system DLL, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit version. Windows normally handles this through WOW64 redirection.
Do not:
- Copy a 32-bit file into
System32. - Copy a 64-bit file into
SysWOW64. - Choose a DLL from an unofficial archive based only on a “32-bit” or “64-bit” label.
- Replace a system file because its version number looks different from one found online.
- Leave a suspicious copy in the application folder.
To check the normal Windows locations:
- Press Win+E.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
wtsapi32.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also inspect
%windir%SysWOW64. - Note whether the error names a different folder, such as the application’s installation directory.
Finding the file does not prove that it is correct. DISM and SFC are safer ways to validate and repair protected Windows files.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running this command is normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 wtsapi32.dll
It may produce an entry-point error or change nothing. wtsapi32.dll is a Windows API library, not a typical ActiveX or COM component that you repair by registering it. Microsoft describes the purpose and limitations of regsvr32.
Fix 8: Do not enable Windows Features to replace the file
Remote Desktop Services APIs are part of Windows. Turning optional Windows features on and off is not a normal way to restore wtsapi32.dll.
If you need to inspect optional features:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures.exe
- Press Enter.
Do not randomly enable Remote Desktop-related features to solve a DLL error. If the file is missing or damaged, use DISM and SFC. If the application specifically requires a Windows feature, follow the application’s documented requirements separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Treat driver troubleshooting as a separate issue
wtsapi32.dll is an API DLL, not a device driver. Reinstalling a graphics, network, or chipset driver is not a direct fix unless the DLL error is part of wider Windows corruption or an update failure.

Use Device Manager only when you also have a device problem:
- Right-click Start.

- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows if you uninstall a device.
- Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support process for the correct driver.
Manually hunting through many driver versions can obscure the actual cause. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation through the full version is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling a damaged application.
Fix 10: Use System Restore if corruption keeps returning
System Restore can help when a suitable restore point exists and the problem began after software installation, an update, or another system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore may not be enabled and may not have a suitable restore point. It can remove recently installed applications or drivers, so review the affected-program list before confirming. Microsoft provides further guidance for System Restore.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy Visual C++ Redistributable usually does not help
wtsapi32.dll is a Windows system component, not a file supplied by the Visual C++ Redistributable.
Installing Visual C++ packages is relevant only when the error also names runtime files such as:
MSVCP*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dllapi-ms-win-crt-*.dll
Installing VC++ Redistributable will not restore a missing Windows copy of wtsapi32.dll. Microsoft maintains the supported packages on its Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download wtsapi32.dll from a random DLL archive, forum, torrent, or file-sharing page.

An unofficial copy may be:
- Modified or bundled with malware
- From the wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Missing related dependencies
- Incompatible with the installed servicing level
- Placed in a folder where it hijacks an application’s normal search order
Even when the file appears to remove the first message, it may not repair the component store or the application that caused the failure. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery tools, or the original application installer instead.
If the error remains after repair
Collect these details before seeking further help:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, including the installed build
- The exact error text and status code
- The name of the failing program
- Whether one program or several programs fail
- Whether
wtsapi32.dllexists in the reported path - Whether the problem began after an update, installation, cleanup, antivirus action, or crash
- The final results reported by DISM and SFC
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file
- Whether the application has a Repair option
If many applications still fail after DISM and SFC, review the CBS log, investigate possible storage problems, and run a trusted full or offline malware scan. If Windows remains damaged, use a repair reinstall before considering Reset this PC. Reset can remove applications and settings even when personal files are retained.
FAQ
Is wtsapi32.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is part of Microsoft Windows and implements the Remote Desktop Services API.
Do I need Remote Desktop enabled?
Usually no. Applications can use the Windows API without you actively connecting to a Remote Desktop session. Enabling Remote Desktop is not a general repair for this DLL.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhere should wtsapi32.dll be located?
The normal Windows system location is %windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications are normally served the 32-bit system copy through WOW64 redirection involving %windir%SysWOW64.
Should I download the DLL?
No. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, or repair the one application that fails. An arbitrary download can be malicious or incompatible.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not for wtsapi32.dll alone. Install a supported VC++ package only when the error identifies a VC++ runtime file or the application’s official requirements call for it.
Should I run regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is normally irrelevant for this Windows API DLL and does not repair missing or corrupted system files.
What if only one old program needs the file?
Repair or reinstall that program from its original vendor or launcher. If the program is obsolete, compatibility problems or an incorrect app-local DLL may be involved.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If the problem continues, use a closely matching Windows repair source or move to Windows repair-reinstall options rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
