Use the game’s official store or account library first, then verify the installation with its built-in repair tool. For a standalone installer, check its Authenticode signature, compare a SHA-256 hash published on the developer’s official HTTPS page, and scan the complete download. None of those checks alone proves a game is harmless if the publisher’s build system or website was compromised.
The distinction matters after Warhorse Studios disclosed a cyberattack on 27 October 2026. The studio said attackers gained unauthorized access to company systems and data, but it has not said that game binaries or player credentials were exposed. Treat “leaked builds,” emergency patches and unsolicited account-security messages as hostile until an announcement reached through a channel you opened independently confirms them.

Do not install a file delivered through a direct message, forum attachment, QR code or unfamiliar download site. Open the launcher or store yourself, check the game’s news and update status there, and use its verify or repair command before considering a reinstall.
- Navigate independently. Type the studio, store or launcher address yourself or open the application from your normal shortcut. Do not follow links in an unsolicited “security” message.
- Use the account library. Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Xbox PC/Microsoft Store and console storefronts are the intended update channels. A familiar filename is not evidence of provenance.
- Run the built-in verification. This repairs files against the launcher’s current manifest and avoids downloading a random replacement executable.
- Stop on warnings. Keep SmartScreen, antivirus and other protections enabled. Investigate a quarantine or signature error instead of creating an exclusion.
- Secure accounts separately. Change a password only when it was reused on an affected service, entered on a suspicious page or associated with signs of unauthorized access. Turn on multifactor authentication and keep Steam Guard or other codes private.
- If a suspicious file already ran, disconnect the device from sensitive accounts, scan it, and use a trusted device to change credentials and review active sessions.
These steps address three different situations: a damaged local installation, an impostor distributing a fake update, and a genuinely compromised publisher pipeline. A launcher repair is excellent for the first case but cannot settle the other two by itself.

How do I verify a game’s files on Steam?
Steam’s desktop client compares your installation with the files expected for that game and branch, then reacquires missing or mismatched pieces. The current path is Library → game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files; older clients may call the tab “Local Files.”
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game, or open its gear menu.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Leave Steam open until the scan and any replacement download finish. Launch only after that download completes.
Steam keeps a manifest containing expected file presence, sizes and hashes. A failed file is marked for re-download, so a repair normally retrieves only damaged pieces rather than the entire game. A typical scan takes about one to 10 minutes, depending on the title’s size and storage speed, according to NewGamesZone’s 2026 guidance. Valve advises avoiding other storage-heavy work, including drive defragmentation or an antivirus scan, while verification is running.
When should you run Steam verification?
- An update was interrupted or the disk filled during downloading.
- The game stopped launching immediately after a patch.
- Textures, sounds or other packaged content disappeared.
- Security software quarantined a file from the installation.
- You removed a mod that had overwritten a Steam-managed file.
Verification is intended to check the installation, not erase progress, but save locations vary by game. Back up saves before reinstalling. A mod that changed a managed file may be replaced with the official version.
What if Steam says files failed to validate?
Allow the repair download to finish, restart Steam and test the game. Repeated failures can indicate antivirus quarantine, disk or permission errors, a mod that keeps rewriting files, or a buggy official patch. Check the game’s official news before taking further action. If antivirus removes the restored file immediately, follow the developer’s security instructions; do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial site.
Can advanced users validate with SteamCMD?
SteamCMD can update and validate an owned game from a command prompt. Use the same account that owns the title, never share the password or Steam Guard code, and substitute the correct installation directory and AppID:

If the AppID or folder is uncertain, use Steam’s desktop Verify button instead of guessing. An installed Steam build ID can confirm the client’s recorded build, but matching version labels do not prove that two folders contain identical bytes.
What does “verify integrity of game files” actually prove?
It answers a narrow question: Do my local files match this launcher’s current manifest for this game and branch? It does not scan the whole computer for malware, guarantee that the game will run, or prove that the developer’s upstream build was never tampered with before the launcher received it.

Provenance outranks a filename, a forum-posted hash, a clean antivirus result or a signature on one file in a multi-part installer. When two checks disagree, stop and return to the official account library or a confirmed studio announcement.
How can I check a Windows game installer’s signature?
Windows Authenticode identifies the certificate used to sign an executable and detects changes made after signing. A valid signature is useful evidence of identity and integrity, but it is not a malware verdict; an unsigned installer can also be legitimate.
PowerShell Authenticode check
Run this command against the exact file you downloaded:

- Valid: Windows accepts the signature under its current trust rules and can identify the certificate. The program may still be malicious, and the certificate could have been stolen.
- NotSigned: no Authenticode signature was found. That is inconclusive rather than proof of tampering.
- Any other status: read
StatusMessage, check the system clock and internet connection for revocation checks, then obtain a fresh copy from the official channel. Do not disable SmartScreen or antivirus to make it run.
The Windows SDK also includes:
signtool verify /pa /all /v "C:Pathsetup.exe"
If the Digital Signatures tab reports an invalid signature or is empty, do not run an unverified emergency installer. A valid signature on setup.exe says nothing about separate archive or .bin files bundled beside it.
How do I compare a game installer’s SHA-256 hash?
Obtain the expected digest from the publisher’s official HTTPS page, not from a forum paste or an unsigned email. SHA-256 produces a 64-character hexadecimal digest; capitalization does not matter, but every character must otherwise match.

In Windows Command Prompt:
certutil -hashfile filename.exe SHA256
On macOS:
shasum -a 256 filename
On Linux:
sha256sum filename
A mismatch means the bytes differ; delete the file and download a fresh copy through the official channel. If no official hash exists, this comparison is unavailable. MD5 is unsuitable because of collision attacks, SHA-1 is broken (Google demonstrated a practical collision in 2017), and CRC32 is not a security control. SHA-512 is stronger but less commonly published. GPG- or PGP-signed checksum lists add protection because they authenticate the list as well as the file.

Why a matching hash can still be dangerous
A hash proves only that your file matches the value you were given. If attackers changed a publisher’s website or build pipeline and replaced both the binary and the posted digest, the malicious file will match perfectly. Online Tech Tips summarizes the limitation: “A matching checksum doesn’t guarantee the file is safe. It only means the file is identical to what the publisher posted.”
That is why an official launcher, independent studio confirmation and a trusted package-signing chain matter more than a hash copied from an unknown website. Two downloads producing the same unexpected digest are a warning that the source, not your download, may be wrong.

Start in your GOG account library or the official Galaxy client. Do not mix .bin files from different downloads, and do not infer authenticity from a familiar filename.
When Galaxy offers Manage installation → Verify / Repair, use that function. For an offline set, scan every component with Microsoft Defender, for example:

A clean scan is not proof that the package is genuine. A signature on setup.exe does not authenticate accompanying .bin files. If Defender flags a confirmed download, leave protection enabled, verify the source and contact GOG Support and Microsoft rather than forcing the installer to run.

After a public breach, unofficial “fixes” may place a modified steam.dll or steam_api.dll beside a game executable. Valve’s normal steam.dll belongs with the Steam client; a copy beside the game’s executable is associated with a modified installation and deserves inspection.
Checking steam.dll
- Inspect the location: a file beside the game executable is not the normal client copy.
- Open VersionInfo. Valve copies report Valve Corporation and Steam Client Engine; empty fields or version 0.0.0.0 are consistent with replacement copies.
- Compare size as a clue, not a verdict. Catalogue builds cited by 2-spyware in 2026 are about 2.9 MB to 3.5 MB; a few-hundred-kilobyte file matches known replacement patterns.
- Run
Get-AuthenticodeSignature. A valid Valve signature is stronger evidence than text fields that can be copied.
Checking steam_api.dll
A valid signature with Valve as signer is consistent with an unmodified Valve build. NotSigned, HashMismatch or another signer means it is not the Valve file as shipped. Catalogue 32-bit Valve builds cited by 2-spyware are about 100 KB to 260 KB. Steam emulators commonly add an .ini, a steam_settings folder, or rename the original library to steam_api.dll.bak or steam_api_o.dll.

These clues do not turn a pirated or modified copy into an official installation. The safer remedy is to remove the modification, back up saves, and let Steam reacquire the expected files.
How can I verify an Android or Fire TV APK update?
This procedure applies to a sideloaded APK, not an app updated through Google Play or another official store. Compare the new APK’s signing-certificate fingerprint with the installed app’s fingerprint. If they differ, stop; the update may have been tampered with or signed by a different developer.
Use Google’s apksigner:
apksigner verify --print-certs --verbose app-update.apk
The file hash changes from version to version, while the signer fingerprint normally remains stable unless the developer rotates or loses the key. A matching fingerprint does not prove the APK is harmless if the signing key was stolen, so obtain the package through the official store whenever possible.
What should console, Epic and Xbox players do?
PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo players should install updates only through the console’s official store or updater. Consoles generally do not expose package hashes for independent checking; a USB file, QR-code download, Discord attachment or “leaked patch” is outside the signed channel.
Epic Games Store and Xbox PC/Microsoft Store launchers provide built-in verification or repair that compares local files with a known-good checksum list and replaces failures. Use those tools before a full reinstall. A storefront removing a title, as happened when Street Fighter 5 was temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store and Steam during a reported Capcom issue, demonstrates the platform’s ability to control distribution; it is not an invitation to seek an unofficial mirror.
Should I turn off the Windows warning or antivirus?
No. SmartScreen, Defender and third-party antivirus can occasionally quarantine legitimate game files, but disabling protection removes a safety layer without proving the file is authentic. Check the antivirus history, verify that the path belongs to the legitimate launcher installation, and consult the developer’s security guidance.
If a file is restored and immediately quarantined again, stop the launch attempt. Re-run the launcher repair, obtain a fresh official download, and contact the publisher or storefront if the problem persists. Never download a “missing DLL” from an unofficial file site, and never create a permanent exclusion for an unverified installer.

What is known about the October 2026 Warhorse incident?
Warhorse Studios confirmed on 27 October 2026 that it had been hit by a cyberattack. Its statement said the attack involved unauthorized access to company systems and company data; the studio said it was working with cybersecurity specialists, coordinating with authorities and would publish further verified information. CEO Martin Frývaldský described securing systems, establishing the breach’s scope and protecting employees, partners and the community as immediate priorities.
As of the disclosure, the studio had not identified the affected data categories, the attackers, the entry point or whether ransomware was involved. Access to company data does not establish that attackers copied or published it, nor that owning Kingdom Come: Deliverance compromised a player’s device or gaming account. No publisher-issued SHA-256 list for a clean post-incident Warhorse build, and no confirmation that Steam or GOG binaries or player credentials were accessed, has been reported.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, released on 4 February 2025, had sold over four million copies by the end of 2025, according to Gamereactor. That scale makes impersonation attempts attractive, but there is no confirmed claim that the attack delivered a malicious game update. Reports about a separate Capcom incident also conflict on the number of affected accounts: some outlets cited 196 customer accounts while another reported more than 11.7 million Capcom ID accounts. Those figures should not be treated as settled evidence about Warhorse or any particular game file.
Should I change my Steam password because of the incident?
The Warhorse disclosure alone does not establish that Steam credentials were exposed. Change the password if it was reused on an affected service, entered into a suspicious page, or if account activity shows an unfamiliar login; then review active sessions and sign out devices you do not recognize.
Use a unique password and enable multifactor authentication where available. Never provide Steam Guard codes or recovery codes to someone claiming to investigate the breach or restore an account. If a suspicious download was executed, secure accounts from a trusted device after scanning the affected computer.
How should you decide whether an update is genuine?
Use the checks in this order because each answers a different question:

- Provenance: Did the file arrive through the official store, account library or launcher?
- Integrity: Does the launcher manifest or official SHA-256 value match?
- Identity: Does the Windows certificate or APK signer identify the expected developer?
- Detection: Does current antivirus software report a known threat?
- Official status: Has the studio or storefront independently confirmed that the patch is intended?
A single positive result should not overrule a failure higher in the chain. A clean scan cannot rescue a file from an unknown site; a valid signature cannot authenticate separate archive parts; and a matching hash cannot expose a compromised publisher pipeline. When the source and the official status remain uncertain, wait for a signed-channel update rather than installing an emergency file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trust a game patch sent by a Discord moderator after a breach?
No. A moderator account can be impersonated or hijacked, and a familiar logo does not establish provenance. Open the studio or storefront yourself and look for the same announcement there before downloading anything.
Does reinstalling a game remove malware from my computer?
No. Reinstalling replaces the game’s files but does not inspect unrelated programs, browser extensions, scheduled tasks or account sessions. If a suspicious installer ran, scan the device and secure accounts from a trusted device as separate steps.
Why do two computers show the same game version but behave differently?
A version label identifies a release record, not every byte in the installation. Mods, quarantined files, configuration data, disk errors or different launcher branches can produce different results even when the displayed version matches.

What should I do if an official download has no published hash?
Use the official launcher or account library and its verify or repair function instead of inventing a comparison value. If only a standalone download exists, confirm the announcement through an independent official channel and check the signer and full package with antivirus.
