That is the case Sam Chandler makes in his October 9, 2026, Shacknews opinion feature, arguing that a hint or navigation cue offered too soon can take away the satisfaction of working something out. His examples make the case vividly, but they are personal experiences—not proof that every player wants the same level of difficulty.
Why an early hint can feel like a spoiler
Help has a real purpose: a player who stays stuck too long may become frustrated or give up. But there is a meaningful difference between help that rescues someone who wants it and an unsolicited answer that arrives before they have had time to think.

Chandler argues for giving players room to reason independently before a game steps in. The goal is not to make every puzzle obscure or to withhold assistance indefinitely. It is to preserve the chance to notice a clue, test an idea, and experience the answer as something the player discovered rather than something the game supplied.

What Chandler’s examples show
Puzzles: make room for the breakthrough
Chandler uses Order of the Sinking Star as his central example of difficult puzzles and the pleasure he takes in eventually finding a solution. In this kind of experience, uncertainty is part of the work: players try possibilities, reconsider what they have seen, and gradually reach an answer. A hint delivered before that process has had a chance to develop can short-circuit the moment of recognition.
Hints: give players time before stepping in
He criticizes puzzle hints that arrive too quickly, citing God of War. The concern is not that hints should never exist; it is that a prompt can feel less like useful support when it interrupts a player who is still actively thinking. A more patient system can leave the hint available without making it the first thing the player hears.

Navigation: point the way without taking over
The same tension applies beyond puzzles. Chandler discusses a trail in Marvel’s Wolverine and guidance in Halo: Campaign Evolved as examples of navigation cues. Such aids can reduce aimless searching, but the more strongly they direct the next action, the less room remains for players to read the environment and choose a route themselves.

Remembering a tool can be part of solving the problem
Chandler recounts getting stuck in Routine after forgetting how to use an ultraviolet weapon modification. He made progress after recalling its purpose. That anecdote captures a kind of difficulty that is not simply about a puzzle’s intended answer: sometimes a player needs time to remember a mechanic or reconsider a tool already in their possession. It is his reported experience, not an independent test of the game.

How to judge the balance between guidance and discovery
Chandler’s examples suggest two useful questions for evaluating assistance: how much time the game gives a player to explore before offering an unsolicited hint, and how directly its navigation aids identify the next action. Neither choice has to be all-or-nothing.
- When a player is still experimenting: waiting before surfacing a hint can protect the satisfaction of an earned solution.
- When a player is losing momentum: an optional or requested hint can provide support without assuming everyone needs it immediately.
- When the challenge is navigation: a cue can orient the player while leaving room to interpret the surroundings, rather than marking every move as a prescribed route.
These are ways to think through the tradeoff Chandler raises, not outcomes established by player-response data. Different players may want different levels of help, and the feature does not measure those preferences.

What “let players feel stupid” means
Chandler’s headline is a provocation, not an endorsement of contempt for players. The productive version of feeling stuck is temporary uncertainty that gives way to understanding: the moment a clue clicks, a forgotten tool becomes useful, or a route makes sense. A game that intervenes too soon may prevent that transition; one that offers no practical way forward can instead leave a player stranded.
His conclusion captures the value he sees in that brief struggle: “There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as feeling clever after feeling dumb, so why take that from me?” For Chandler, a game earns that exhilaration by trusting players to think before it tells them what to do.
