Electronic Arts confirmed on December 22, 2025, that Vince Zampella had died following a December 21 crash on Angeles Crest Highway. Contemporary reports from the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times said he was 55. A later Los Angeles Times report gives his age as 56, so published accounts conflict.
What happened to Vince Zampella?
The Los Angeles Times reported that the California Highway Patrol’s preliminary account said a southbound car left Angeles Crest Highway for unknown reasons, struck a concrete barrier and caught fire. Both people in the car died. The report does not establish why the vehicle left the roadway.

In a later report, the Los Angeles Times attributed Zampella’s cause of death to the Los Angeles County medical examiner: thermal injuries and smoke inhalation, with blunt trauma. That finding concerns how he died; it does not explain what caused the crash.
How old was Vince Zampella?
The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times both reported on December 22, 2025, that Zampella was 55. An April 22, 2026, Los Angeles Times report instead says he was 56. The available reports therefore disagree, and the later age has not been reconciled here.

Why was Vince Zampella important to video games?
Zampella helped shape several major game franchises as a studio founder and leader. He co-founded Infinity Ward with Jason West and Grant Collier; the studio released the first Call of Duty in 2003. He later co-founded Respawn Entertainment with West and led work associated with Titanfall, Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi games.
He also led work on Battlefield. The Los Angeles Times reported that he oversaw the franchise for Ripple Effect Studios, the Los Angeles DICE team renamed in 2021. The Associated Press reported that Call of Duty had sold more than half a billion games worldwide as of its December 22, 2025, report; that figure is AP’s attribution.

Electronic Arts described Zampella’s influence as “profound and far-reaching,” according to the Associated Press. Geoff Keighley, video game journalist and co-creator of The Game Awards, called him “an extraordinary person — a gamer at heart, but also a visionary executive with a rare ability to recognize talent and give people the freedom and confidence to create something truly great.”
