“vm3dgl64.dll is missing from your computer,” “vm3dgl64.dll was not found,” and “the code execution cannot proceed because vm3dgl64.dll could not be loaded” are common versions of this problem. vm3dgl64.dll is a VMware SVGA 3D user-mode OpenGL driver library installed inside a Windows virtual machine by VMware Tools.

The 60-second answer

Do not download vm3dgl64.dll from a DLL website and do not copy a random replacement into System32.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

First confirm that Windows is running as a VMware guest. Then repair or reinstall VMware Tools inside that virtual machine, restart Windows, and test the affected application again. If the problem started after VMware Tools 12.5.0, update to a later supported VMware Tools release or roll back to a known-good release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is normally found at:

C:WindowsSystem32vm3dgl64.dll

It is not a standard Windows component supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

What causes vm3dgl64.dll errors

The correct fix depends on whether Windows reports a missing file or an application crash.

What you see Most likely cause
A program says the DLL is missing or not found VMware Tools is missing, incomplete, quarantined, or damaged
Event Viewer names vm3dgl64.dll as the faulting module An OpenGL application conflict or VMware graphics-driver defect
Several 3D applications crash VMware Tools, virtual 3D acceleration, or the guest graphics stack
Only one application fails That application may need repair, updating, or software rendering
The issue began after VMware Tools 12.5.0 A VMware OpenGL and LLVMPipe regression is possible
The issue began after a snapshot rollback The guest files and installed VMware Tools version may no longer match

vm3dgl64.dll is the 64-bit library. A related 32-bit file may be named vm3dgl.dll. Do not replace the 64-bit file with the 32-bit version, and do not assume that SysWOW64 is the correct location. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components.

Fix 1: Repair VMware Tools

This is the safest first repair when the file is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that the computer is a VMware guest

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type winver and press Enter to identify the Windows version.
  3. Confirm with the person managing the machine whether it runs in VMware Workstation, Fusion, ESXi, or another VMware-hosted environment.
  4. Open File Explorer and check:
C:WindowsSystem32vm3dgl64.dll

If the file exists, the message may actually be an application crash rather than a missing file. Continue with the verification steps below.

Repair the installed package

  1. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
  2. Find VMware Tools.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Modify or Repair, if available.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.
  6. Restart the virtual machine.

If Repair is not available, download the VMware Tools Windows package that matches the host and guest from the official Broadcom VMware Tools download portal. Install it inside the guest, then restart Windows.

Do not assume that the newest package is compatible with every host. Use the release supported by the VMware product and guest operating system.

Confirm the result

After restarting, check whether:

  • C:WindowsSystem32vm3dgl64.dll exists.
  • The affected program opens normally.
  • Other OpenGL or 3D applications also work.
  • VMware Tools appears normally in Installed apps.

If the file is still absent, check Windows Security quarantine before repeatedly copying files.

Fix 2: Check for the VMware Tools 12.5 graphics problem

A faulting-module report does not prove that vm3dgl64.dll itself is damaged. VMware Tools 12.x has had documented OpenGL and LLVMPipe issues that can cause applications to crash with this DLL in the report.

This is especially relevant when:

  • The application worked before VMware Tools was updated.
  • Event Viewer reports Application Error, Event 1000.
  • A Java crash log shows a problematic frame containing vm3dgl64.dll.
  • Several OpenGL programs fail after the same VMware Tools update.

Update or roll back VMware Tools

  1. Open Installed apps from Windows Settings.
  2. Check the installed VMware Tools release.
  3. Obtain a later supported release from the official VMware Tools download portal.
  4. Install it inside the guest.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application again.

If updating is not possible, ask the virtualization administrator to roll back VMware Tools to a known-good release, such as a supported 12.4 release.

A later VMware Tools release addressed the reported 12.5 OpenGL defect. Do not treat every vm3dgl64.dll crash as a 12.5.0 problem, but do investigate the installed VMware Tools release when the timing matches.

Apply the LLVMPipe workaround only when appropriate

For the specific VMware OpenGL and LLVMPipe problem, an administrator can test one of these documented workarounds:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Create the system environment variable:
SVGA_ALLOW_LLVMPIPE=0
  • Or add this setting to the virtual machine configuration:
guestinfo.svga.disableLLVMPipe=TRUE

Changing VMX settings can affect other users and applications. Have the virtualization administrator apply and document the change. These settings do not restore a genuinely missing DLL.

Fix 3: Verify the file and its signature

A genuine copy is normally associated with VMware Tools and located in the Windows system directory.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:WindowsSystem32.
  3. Right-click vm3dgl64.dll and select Properties.
  4. Check the Digital Signatures tab, when present.
  5. Inspect the signer and signature status.
  6. On the Details tab, note the file information and compare it with the installed VMware Tools package.

There is no single universal file size, hash, or DLL version that applies to every VMware Tools installation. Release and display-driver differences can change these details.

  • Designed for changingPCIE 6PIN cable installation direction.
  • Package included 2 directrions of connector interface adapters.(up angled+down angled)
  • 180 Degrees U turn design, connecting between PSU Cable and GPU connector, does not cause pressure on the GPU connector for long-term stable use
  • Can install the 6pin PSU PCIE cable from vertical to horizontal direction with this adapter to fit in height limited chassis
  • These adapters are standard PCIe connectors, so it will work with all graphics cards such as: ASUS, ASRock, EVGA ,Gigabyte, Radeon, Sapphire, NVIDIA, etc.;

Treat these findings as suspicious:

  • The file is in a user profile, Downloads folder, temporary folder, or an application folder unrelated to VMware.
  • The signature is missing or invalid.
  • VMware Tools is not installed, but the file claims to be a VMware driver.
  • Antivirus identifies the file as modified or malicious.

Do not declare the file safe from its name alone. Verify its location, signature, and relationship to VMware Tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a driver file after an update or snapshot change.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review detections related to vm3dgl64.dll.
  5. Check the original path and detection details.
  6. Restore the file only when it came from a verified VMware Tools installation and the signature is trustworthy.

Reinstalling VMware Tools is preferable to restoring an old quarantined copy because the restored file may not match the other VMware graphics components. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to suppress the error. Any exclusion should be narrowly scoped and approved under your security policy.

Fix 5: Repair the affected application

If VMware Tools is intact and only one application crashes, repair that application instead of replacing the VMware DLL.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Open its menu and select Repair, if available.
  5. If Repair does not help, select Reset only when you understand that it may remove application settings.
  6. Use the program’s launcher to Verify files, Repair files, or reinstall it from its official installer.
  7. Check the program’s settings for software rendering, safe mode, or no OpenGL options.

Some OpenGL-dependent applications conflict with VMware’s virtual graphics implementation. As a diagnostic step, the VMware administrator can disable virtual 3D acceleration where supported. If the application then starts, the result points to a graphics compatibility issue rather than a missing Windows runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall the virtual graphics driver

vm3dgl64.dll is part of VMware’s virtual display and OpenGL stack, not a normal standalone Windows driver. Device Manager may show the VMware SVGA adapter rather than the DLL name.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Look for the VMware SVGA or VMware virtual display adapter.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. On the Driver tab, review the provider, date, and version.
  6. Select Update driver if an approved driver package is available.
  7. If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
  8. Restart the guest.

Do not uninstall the display adapter unless you have the matching VMware Tools package ready and a recovery plan. Removing the wrong virtual display driver can reduce the guest to a basic display mode.

Manually comparing driver releases and finding the correct package can be time-consuming, especially when several virtual machines use different host versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair or driver installation requires the full version. VMware Tools remains the definitive source for this VMware-owned graphics component.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components

Windows repair commands are useful when multiple applications or system components are damaged. They are unlikely to restore vm3dgl64.dll when the missing file belongs to VMware Tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. If both commands complete successfully but the VMware DLL remains missing, repair VMware Tools rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.

When Windows repair requires repeated manual scans and the cause is not obvious, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system problems in a free scan; repairs require the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling VMware Tools when that package owns the missing file.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when the error began after a driver, VMware Tools, or Windows change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the result.
  6. Select Finish only when the impact is acceptable.

System Restore changes system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed applications. It is not a substitute for backing up personal files. After restoration, repair VMware Tools if the file or graphics driver is still inconsistent.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is not a routine repair command for vm3dgl64.dll. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A graphics-driver runtime library generally does not become functional by being registered.

Running commands such as these is not a proper fix:

regsvr32 vm3dgl64.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32vm3dgl64.dll

The command may produce an entry-point error, or it may create the impression that the file was repaired when the actual VMware graphics stack is still damaged.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

A separately downloaded DLL can have:

  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • The wrong VMware Tools build.
  • Missing dependencies.
  • An invalid or absent digital signature.
  • Malicious or modified code.
  • No compatibility with the other VMware graphics files.

Copying it into System32 also hides the real problem, such as a broken VMware Tools installation or a VMware OpenGL regression. Use the official VMware Tools package supplied through Broadcom and the VMware administrator instead.
