If VMware Workstation cannot power off a virtual machine, shut down the guest operating system first when it still responds. Then use VM > Power > Power Off. If Workstation itself is frozen, end only the matching vmware-vmx.exe process in Windows Task Manager, reopen Workstation, and verify the VM state. Treat a hard stop as a last resort: Broadcom warns that it is equivalent to switching off a physical computer and can cause data loss or file-system corruption.

The failure can originate in the guest OS, a virtual device or VM monitor, host CPU or memory pressure, storage, or networking. The safest fix therefore depends on whether one VM or several are affected and whether the guest console or network is still responsive.

What does “VMware Workstation failed to power off” mean?

Workstation is waiting for a shutdown operation to finish, but one layer of the virtual machine has stopped responding. The guest may be closing an application, the VM monitor may be waiting on a virtual device, or the host may be unable to complete disk, memory, or network operations. A black screen during shutdown is the same class of symptom, not proof that the guest has already powered off.

Broadcom’s guidance covers VMware Desktop Hypervisor and Workstation installations on Windows and Linux. The recovery sequence below is written for a Windows Workstation host because that is where the documented vmware-vmx.exe process step applies.

How do I safely power off a stuck Workstation VM?

Use the least destructive action that matches the VM’s state. Do not start by killing every VMware process or by rebooting the host.

  1. Shut down inside the guest. If the guest desktop, terminal, or console still responds, use its normal shutdown command. This allows applications and the guest file system to close cleanly.
  2. Use Workstation’s power command. Select the affected VM, then choose VM > Power > Power Off. This is the normal Workstation stop after an in-guest shutdown has been attempted.
  3. Check whether the interface is merely busy. If the VM console is still changing or the guest remains reachable, allow time for the operation and gather logs or performance information before escalating. There is no universal timeout that makes a hard stop safe.
  4. End the matching VM process if Workstation is frozen. Open Windows Task Manager, locate the vmware-vmx.exe instance belonging to the affected VM, and end that process. Avoid terminating unrelated VMware processes when other VMs are running.
  5. Reopen Workstation and verify the state. Confirm that the VM is listed as powered off before starting it again. If the guest reports an unclean shutdown, check that it boots and that its important applications and data are present.

Broadcom’s procedure is documented in its frozen virtual-machine power-off guidance. Ending vmware-vmx.exe is already an abrupt process termination; reserve it for a frozen Workstation interface or an otherwise nonresponsive VM.

When is a hard power-off justified?

Use a hard stop only when the guest and Workstation cannot complete a normal stop and you have accepted the possibility of guest data loss. Broadcom’s warning is explicit: Performing a hard power off has the same effect as switching off the power switch on a physical computer. Use this method only when it is absolutely necessary because it may cause data loss or file system corruption.

  • Lower-risk situation: the guest responds, or the VM can still be reached over its network. Continue troubleshooting the guest or allow a clean shutdown.
  • Intermediate-risk situation: the guest console is frozen but Workstation can still issue a normal power-off. Try the Workstation command and preserve logs first.
  • Highest-risk situation: the console and network are unresponsive, the interface is frozen, and the VM process will not exit normally. Capture whatever evidence is practical, then use the smallest available force escalation.

A hard stop can destroy the evidence needed to identify the original fault. If the VM contains important work, record the time, visible symptom, and affected VM before forcing it off, and save performance data or logs whenever the host remains usable.

How do I fix repeated long or black-screen shutdowns?

For repeated long shutdowns or a black screen while shutting down, Broadcom publishes a Workstation configuration workaround. It is targeted at that symptom; it is not a universal cure for every power-off failure.

  1. Exit VMware Workstation.
  2. Open C:ProgramDataVMwareVMware Workstationconfig.ini with an editor that can save plain text. If the file already contains any of these keys, update their values rather than creating duplicate entries.
  3. Add the following lines exactly:
prefvmx.minVmMemPct = "100"
mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"
mainMem.partialLazySave = "FALSE"
mainMem.partialLazyRestore = "FALSE"
  1. Save the file and relaunch Workstation.
  2. Retry the affected VM and note whether the shutdown completes normally or the black screen returns.

Keep a copy of the original configuration before editing it so you can revert the change if behavior worsens. These settings address the shutdown and memory-file handling path described by Broadcom; they do not identify whether the underlying trigger is a guest application, host contention, storage, or networking.

How can I tell where the failure is occurring?

First determine the scope of the incident, then check responsiveness. Dell’s troubleshooting guidance groups likely causes into the guest, the VM monitor or virtual devices, host resources, and backing storage or networking.

What you observe Where to investigate first Useful checks before forcing a stop
Only one VM is affected and its console responds Guest OS and running applications Finish or cancel the guest shutdown, close applications, and inspect guest-side errors.
Only one VM is affected and both console and network are unresponsive VM monitor, virtual devices, or that VM’s backing files Check host CPU and memory availability, the VM’s virtual devices, and storage access.
Several VMs hang during shutdown Shared host resources, storage, or networking Compare the VMs, look for host resource contention, and check shared disks and network infrastructure.
The screen is black only during shutdown Shutdown and memory-file handling, then the guest and host Apply the documented config.ini workaround and collect logs before repeating a hard stop.

For a single responsive guest, a stuck application can hold up an otherwise healthy VM. When several guests fail together, a common host dependency is more plausible than an isolated guest process. This distinction prevents an unnecessary process kill from masking a storage or resource problem.

What host conditions can leave a VM unable to power off?

Guest applications or the guest operating system

Applications may refuse to exit, a service may be waiting on I/O, or the guest OS may be completing file-system work. A responsive console is a strong reason to continue with an in-guest shutdown rather than terminating the VM process from Windows.

The VM monitor or virtual devices

The VM monitor coordinates virtual disks, network adapters, USB devices, and other emulated hardware. A device that is waiting indefinitely can make the guest appear dead even when the Windows host itself is healthy. If only one VM shows the problem, compare its virtual hardware and recent configuration changes with a working VM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host CPU and memory contention

When the host is under heavy CPU or memory pressure, Workstation may take a long time to flush state and release resources. Check host availability while the VM is still present. Ending the process removes the immediate workload but does not correct the contention that caused the delay.

Backing storage and networking

Power-off may wait for virtual-disk writes or network operations. A shared storage path, a busy disk, or a failing network dependency can affect multiple VMs at once. If several guests show the same behavior, inspect those shared paths before repeatedly hard-stopping individual machines.

What is the difference between Workstation recovery and ESXi VM kills?

Workstation desktop recovery and ESXi host administration are different environments. Do not paste ESXi commands into a local Windows Workstation troubleshooting guide or assume that a Workstation process has an ESXi process identifier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Environment or action Shutdown grace Data-loss risk Can you preserve evidence?
Guest OS shutdown Highest; applications and the guest file system can close normally Lowest Yes, while the guest remains available
Workstation VM > Power > Power Off Normal Workstation power-off path Lower than a hard stop, but not risk-free if the guest is already stuck Usually; collect logs first when possible
End the matching Windows vmware-vmx.exe process Abrupt process termination Potential guest data loss or file-system damage Only whatever was collected before termination
ESXi esxcli vm process kill with soft ESXi gives the VMX process a chance to exit cleanly Lower than harder ESXi methods Often, if the host remains responsive
ESXi hard or force kill Increasingly forceful ESXi escalation High; treat as an emergency Limited after termination

VMware’s ESXCLI reference says administrators should always attempt a soft kill first, followed by hard and then force if necessary; a reboot is required if all three fail. Those commands apply to an ESXi host, not to the Windows Workstation interface. See the VMware ESXCLI VM process reference for that separate platform.

What should I collect before ending the VM process?

Collect evidence only while doing so will not endanger the host or other VMs. The goal is to preserve facts that disappear after a hard stop.

  • Record whether the guest console responds and whether the VM answers over the network.
  • Note whether one VM or multiple VMs are affected.
  • Check host CPU and memory availability while the VM is stuck.
  • Check the VM’s virtual devices and the availability of its backing storage and network paths.
  • Save Workstation and guest logs, plus performance data, when the system permits it.
  • Write down the exact sequence that led to the hang, including whether the symptom was a long shutdown or a black screen.

If the host itself is becoming unstable, protect the host first and stop collecting data. A delayed diagnosis is preferable to losing the host or every running VM.

What should I do after a forced stop?

Reopen Workstation and confirm that the affected VM is powered off before starting it. On the next boot, watch for an unclean-shutdown or file-system-recovery message and verify that essential data and applications are available. If the VM immediately hangs again, do not repeat force-offs without investigating the scope, host resources, storage, networking, and the four-line configuration workaround.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fixed number of minutes I should wait before killing vmware-vmx.exe?

No universal wait time is established for this symptom. Base the decision on responsiveness, whether other VMs are affected, host stability, and the value of preserving logs rather than on an arbitrary countdown.

Do the four config.ini lines repair every failed power-off?

No. Broadcom presents them as a workaround for repeated long or black-screen shutdowns. A failure caused by a guest application, resource contention, storage, networking, or a virtual device still requires investigation in that area.

Is a VM that answers on the network safe to hard-stop?

Network reachability means the guest is still doing some work, so it is a reason to attempt a clean guest shutdown or normal Workstation power-off first. It does not guarantee that every application has closed or that pending disk writes are complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Workstation and ESXi kill procedures interchangeable?

No. Workstation recovery uses the VM menu and, when necessary, the matching Windows vmware-vmx.exe process. The esxcli vm process kill escalation belongs to an ESXi host and should be used only in that environment.

What if the VM starts normally but the problem returns?

Treat the recurrence as a diagnostic signal rather than repeatedly accepting data loss. Compare the affected VM with working guests, examine host resource and shared storage or network conditions, and preserve logs before the next shutdown attempt.
