Yes—on Steam, your existing full-game save is expected to keep working after the free Complete Edition update on 30 October 2026. The patch upgrades the original Volcano Princess app in place; it is not a second Steam purchase, and nothing in the official announcement tells players to delete saves or restart. Make a local copy of your save folder before Steam applies the update, because the new build adjusts save handling and the patch had not yet been independently verified in the wild as of 29 October.

What happens to the Steam version on 30 October 2026?
Steam owners receive a free, in-place update to the copy they already own. The official Volcano Princess account posted on 27 October: “Volcano Princess will get a free Steam update on October 30! This free update will contain all the new content added for the multi-platform release.”
AUTOMATON WEST reported the same plan from publisher Gamirror Games and developer Egg Hatcher: the original Steam application (App ID 1669980) is upgraded with the content that shipped in the console and mobile Complete Edition. Techtroduce and PCLabs likewise describe an expanded existing game rather than a separately sold Steam product. You should therefore let Steam patch the game you already have; do not search for a second Complete Edition listing or buy paid DLC for this content.

A TapTap community recap dated 29 October says the update is pushed automatically and that owned copies receive the content at no extra charge. It also reports a simultaneous 12:00 release, probably China local time, but the official English announcement gives only the date. Treat 30 October as confirmed and that clock time as unverified.
What the update adds
The Complete Edition package is an expansion of the existing game, not a replacement campaign. It includes:
- Path of Two Shadows: a more demanding dungeon for the daughter and one chosen companion, with companion-specific scenarios and dungeon-exclusive illustrations.
- New narrative material: extra episodes, newly written scenes, additional CGs, new items and clothing, including a wedding dress.
- Audio and presentation: full Japanese voice acting, a new opening movie, and revamped soundtrack and sound effects. Mai Nakahara continues as the daughter; Marina Inoue and Kento Ito join the cast.
- Localization: retranslated Japanese text, improved English, Traditional Chinese, and Korean support on the multi-platform release.
The TapTap recap also mentions a remade opening, Volcano Kingdom character-story supplements and interface, save-structure and scene-presentation adjustments. Those details come from a community restatement rather than the English announcement, so they should not be treated as a complete official patch-note list.
Will an old Steam save actually load?
The expected result is yes. In a 29 July 2026 AUTOMATON WEST interview, Egg Hatcher producers Zoi and Fry said: “Yes, once the free update rolls out, the original Volcano Princess will be upgraded to include all of the Complete Edition’s content, so existing PC players will be able to enjoy every new feature from the Complete Edition at no additional cost.” They also said longtime players should enjoy the latest form “without any hassle.”
That is a statement about an in-place upgrade, not a published slot-by-slot migration table. The most explicit save-specific wording available by 29 October is the TapTap recap: the original Steam copy becomes the Complete Edition, old saves continue to be used, players should not manually delete saves, and the client pulls the patch automatically. Because the recap also refers to save-structure changes, a backup is still the sensible precaution.

There was a useful precedent in Egg Hatcher’s Steam news for version 2.02.01 on 26 February 2025. That update increased the number of save slots to 24 and improved the save-file structure. On first launch, old-version files were automatically moved into an OldVersionArchives folder in the save directory, and the studio recommended a manual backup before launching the new build. Version 2.02.02 later fixed a launch failure that could occur after Steam Cloud was enabled when old-save files were missing.

Do not interpret that evidence gap as a known incompatibility: it means only that the promised migration had not yet been publicly verified.
How should I back up the save before Steam updates?
You need a copy of the entire Volcano Princess save directory, not just a screenshot or one visible slot. Back up before the first launch of the updated build.
- Open the Windows AppData location. Press

- Allow the update. Let Steam patch the existing installation on 30 October. Do not delete the save directory to “force” Complete Edition content; that can remove the very files you need.
- Launch once and inspect your slots. If the game opens normally, verify that your expected save slots and progress are present before removing the backup.
On Steam Deck, the community-documented location is under the Steam compatibility prefix for App ID 1669980, in the steamapps/compatdata/1669980 tree. The exact subfolder can vary with the Proton prefix, so copy the entire Volcano Princess save directory you find there rather than moving individual files.
What if my save is missing after the update?
Do not start a new file immediately. Work through the migration’s likely recovery locations first.

OldVersionArchives. Egg Hatcher used that folder during the 2.02 migration to preserve old-version files. If Complete Edition performs a similar conversion, the archive is the first place to look. - Check the original directory. Confirm you are looking in
AppDataLocalLowEggHatcherVolcanoPrincessfor the same Windows account that ran the game. A different Windows profile can make an intact save appear to be missing. - Use your manual copy. Keep Steam closed while replacing a damaged or empty folder, and restore the complete backup rather than mixing files from different versions.
- Review Steam Cloud only after the local copy is safe. Cloud synchronization can present a conflict or restore a newer empty state. Preserve both local and cloud choices before accepting a prompt.

Do I need to start a new game for Path of Two Shadows?
There is no published English rule saying that an existing cycle must be abandoned, and the Complete Edition is designed as new content inside the upgraded game. However, the developer has not stated whether Path of Two Shadows unlocks immediately in an in-progress year or month, requires a particular story condition, or adds a catch-up flag to an already completed run.
The TapTap recap tells players who are stuck in a story to begin a new cycle and tells ending hunters to head for Path of Two Shadows. That is consistent with old saves remaining valid, but it is not a formal New Game Plus or unlock specification. Keep your current save, update first and wait for patch notes or player reports before deciding whether a fresh cycle is necessary.

The Nintendo eShop states: “Data played in “Volcano Princess Prologue” cannot be carried over to the full release. Thank you for your understanding.” Gematsu and other storefront coverage repeat that limitation. It applies to the July Prologue demo on Switch, PS5, iOS and Android; do not confuse it with full-game Steam saves from the 2023 release and later updates.

There is also no official method for moving a Steam save to Switch, PS5, mobile or Xbox. Steam Cloud, Nintendo Save Data Cloud and platform-native mobile storage are separate systems, so assume that a save stays on the platform that created it.
