vssapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game file. If Windows or an application says vssapi.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the affected application rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file implements part of the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) API. Backup programs, restore tools, disk-imaging software, and other VSS-aware applications may load it when they create or use volume snapshots. Microsoft documents the VSS functions contained in Vssapi.dll.

Start by identifying what failed
Before repairing anything, note whether the error appears:
- When Windows starts
- When one particular game or application starts
- During a backup, restore, or disk-image operation
- After an update, uninstall, cleanup operation, or antivirus detection
These details determine whether you need to repair Windows, repair one application, or troubleshoot VSS itself.

Commonly reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because vssapi.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting vssapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading vssapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vssapi.dll was not found.”
- “vssapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording is useful, but it does not always identify the real cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that vssapi.dll exists but a dependency required by it is missing.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected system components unavailable or damaged. Install pending updates before running repair commands.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates or Download and install if shown.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Try opening the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not assume that an update alone replaced the file.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix when the Windows component is missing or corrupted. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC), because SFC may need a healthy component store as its repair source. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the results.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait until the operation completes. It may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not find source files, do not download vssapi.dll separately. Use Windows Update first, then use a genuine, matching Windows installation source with this format:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that matches your Windows edition, release, and architecture.
Run SFC
After DISM completes successfully, use the same elevated Command Prompt and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that it:
- Found no integrity violations
- Found corrupt files and repaired them
- Found corrupt files but could not repair some of them
Restart Windows after the scan, even if repairs were reported. Then retest the program.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application or game
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
If only one program fails, the application may be loading an incompatible or damaged copy of the DLL, or it may have a missing dependency of its own. A program-specific error does not prove that the program supplied vssapi.dll.
Repair the application before changing Windows files.

Repair a traditional desktop program
- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart if requested and test the program.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option. If verification finds damaged files, allow the launcher to replace them. If the application still fails, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the application publisher’s official installer.
If the problem started immediately after removing another program, a shared component or application-directory DLL may have been removed. Reinstalling the affected program is safer than copying a DLL from another computer.

Time needed: 5–10 minutes
On 64-bit Windows, the normal system directories have confusing names:
%WINDIR%System32normally contains 64-bit system files.%WINDIR%SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files used through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection.
Microsoft explains this arrangement in its documentation for the File System Redirector.

To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
Do not swap files between System32 and SysWOW64. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may require different architectures, and an incorrect DLL can produce errors such as:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
Do not use version or size lists from other computers as a universal standard. vssapi.dll varies with Windows release, servicing level, architecture, and language.

Check for an application-folder copy
An unexplained vssapi.dll beside an application may be stale, damaged, or the wrong architecture. Windows’ DLL search order can cause an application-directory copy to load before the intended system copy.
Do not delete or replace a file merely because it is present in the program folder. Instead:
- Note the application’s installation folder.
- Use the application’s official repair or reinstall process.
- If the file is digitally signed, open its Properties, select Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer.
- If the signature is missing or invalid, scan the file and the application with Windows Security.
- Contact the application publisher if its installer placed the file there.
The expected Windows copy should be associated with Microsoft and located in the appropriate Windows system directory. A copy next to an application requires separate provenance checking.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate system file, although a security product may also have removed a malicious replacement. Treat quarantine as a possibility, not proof of the cause.

vssapi.dllor the program that reports the error. - Open an item to see its details.
Only restore or allow a file after verifying its digital signature and source. Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the device. Its Protection history guidance explains the available actions.
After resolving a false detection, run a full scan. If the detection identifies malware, follow Windows Security’s removal instructions instead of restoring the file.
Fix 6: Update or repair related drivers only when the timeline supports it
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
A driver change can affect backup, storage, snapshot, or imaging software, but a driver update is not the normal first repair for a missing Windows API DLL. Use this step when the error began after a storage-driver, disk, backup-device, or system-driver change.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand relevant categories such as Disk drives, Storage controllers, System devices, and Display adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the device connected to the timeline.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not randomly uninstall devices or install an unrelated driver package to fix vssapi.dll.

When several hardware drivers are involved, identifying which version is stale can take longer than the actual installation. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its driver installation features are handled by the full version, and it is optional.
Fix 7: Do not install unrelated runtime packages
Time needed: 5 minutes
vssapi.dll belongs to Microsoft Windows and implements the Volume Shadow Copy Service API. It does not normally come from:
- Visual C++ Redistributables
- DirectX installers
- .NET installers
- The Windows SDK as an end-user runtime package
Repairing those packages may help a different error, but it is not a verified general fix for this Windows component. The VSS development documentation refers to development files such as VssApi.lib, not a universal replacement DLL. Do not install an SDK merely because an error mentions vssapi.dll.
Fix 8: Do not register vssapi.dll with regsvr32
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not the normal repair method for vssapi.dll.
Running a command such as this is generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 vssapi.dll
It may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, because a system API DLL is not necessarily a self-registering COM component. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of the regsvr32 command.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and the affected program’s repair process instead.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
If vssapi.dll stopped working after a driver installation, software removal, update, or registry change, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier working state.

If the error occurs during a VSS backup
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A VSS backup failure is not automatically a missing-vssapi.dll problem. VSS coordinates requesters, writers, and providers to create snapshots. Windows includes a system provider, while backup vendors may install their own providers or writers. Microsoft provides an overview of Volume Shadow Copy Service.
To inspect the VSS state:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
vssadmin list writers
- Then run:
vssadmin list providers
- Open Event Viewer from Start.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Review errors at the time of the failed backup, especially entries from VSS or the backup software.
Missing writers, failed writer states, provider errors, or VSS events can require repair of the backup product or the application that owns the writer. Microsoft’s VSS writer troubleshooting guidance provides additional diagnostic direction.

Frequently asked questions
Is vssapi.dll safe?
A Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows system directory is a normal Windows component. An unexplained copy beside an application should be checked for its digital signature, origin, and security status.
Should I download vssapi.dll from the internet?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or fail to repair the missing dependency that caused the message. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Microsoft installation media, or the affected program’s official installer.
Where is vssapi.dll located?
On 64-bit Windows, the 64-bit system copy is normally under %WINDIR%System32, while the 32-bit copy is normally under %WINDIR%SysWOW64. Do not use the directory names to infer bitness without accounting for Windows file-system redirection.
Does “module could not be found” mean vssapi.dll is absent?
Not necessarily. The named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Repair Windows and the affected application before concluding that the file itself must be copied.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not for this particular Windows DLL. Those packages address different runtime components and are not the normal repair for the VSS API.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I run regsvr32 vssapi.dll?
Generally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs, while vssapi.dll is a Windows API component. DISM and SFC are the appropriate first repair tools.
What if only one game or application reports the error?
Repair or verify that program’s files first. If that fails, reinstall it through its official installer or launcher. A program-specific message does not establish that the program supplied vssapi.dll.
What if nothing above works?
Review Windows Security history, check VSS writers and providers if the failure involves backups, try System Restore, and then use a Windows repair reinstall. Avoid mixing DLLs from another computer or an unofficial download.
