Battlefield 6 is the closest current match for Modern Warfare’s modern weapons, cinematic presentation and large-scale multiplayer. Choose Delta Force if you want that style for free, or Insurgency: Sandstorm if you want Modern Warfare’s loadouts with far deadlier gunfights and almost no HUD assistance. For a genuine military-operation simulation rather than an arcade shooter, move up to Squad or Arma Reforger. Ready or Not and Six Days in Fallujah are better for methodical room clearing, while Gray Zone Warfare and Escape from Tarkov add persistent gear, medical systems and extraction stakes.
The important distinction is that visual realism and simulation realism are different. A photorealistic body-camera effect can look convincing without modelling radios, logistics, ballistics or casualty care. The guide below separates games that feel like Modern Warfare from games that ask you to operate like a soldier.

Which game is closest to Modern Warfare?
Battlefield 6 is the best overall answer. It keeps the modern setting, quick weapon handling and cinematic scale, then expands the fight with tanks, aircraft, amphibious operations and buildings that can be destroyed to create new sightlines. Its campaign moves through a 2027 conflict involving Marine Raiders, the Sahara, Gibraltar and New York, while multiplayer offers Conquest, Breakthrough and close-quarters modes across Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon classes. Electronic Arts describes the game as all-out war across land, air and sea with tactical destruction; the official site is at EA’s Battlefield 6 page.
Battlefield 6 launched on 10 October 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. By October 2026 it was in Season 5/Year 2, with continuing live-service updates. The trade-off is that it is a spectacle shooter, not a strict simulation: health, respawns, class abilities and readable HUD elements keep it much closer to Call of Duty than to Arma. Launch coverage also noted balance and cheating concerns, so buy it for scale and destruction rather than documentary authenticity. The same universe includes the free REDSEC battle-royale mode.

What are the best Modern Warfare alternatives, ranked?
1. Battlefield 6 — modern-war spectacle with bigger battles
Pick Battlefield 6 if your favourite parts of Modern Warfare are the campaign’s set pieces, modern loadouts and chaotic multiplayer rather than its attempt at realism. Tactical destruction is the signature system: walls, cover and façades can be removed or reshaped, exposing routes that did not exist at the start of a round. Vehicles and four distinct classes give it a broader battlefield role than a typical 6v6 shooter.
It works particularly well for players who want to move from a Modern Warfare campaign into a solo story and then into 64-player-style combined-arms matches without learning a military radio procedure. It is premium multiplayer and campaign software, with REDSEC available as a free battle royale. Expect the most polished blockbuster presentation on this list, but not one- or two-shot lethality or persistent logistics.
2. Delta Force — the best free on-ramp
Delta Force is the default free recommendation because it combines familiar Call of Duty gunfeel with a Battlefield-scale Warfare mode and an extraction mode called Operations. The official site describes Warfare as first-person land, sea and air combat; its listed format is 24 versus 24, while larger community descriptions cover maps and battles that can approach 100 players. Operations adds loot, extraction and the promise of “No Pay to Win, You Play to Win.”
The game launched on PC in late 2024 and, according to 2026 coverage, is also available on consoles and mobile. A Black Hawk Down campaign recreates the Mogadishu operation in Unreal Engine 5, alongside a fictional 2035 conflict. Operator abilities and cosmetic skins make Delta Force more arcade-oriented than Squad or Arma, but that is exactly why it is a comfortable first step. Download it from the official Delta Force site if you want to try modern combined arms without paying for entry.
3. Insurgency: Sandstorm — the ideal middle step
Insurgency: Sandstorm is what to play when Modern Warfare’s weapons and setting appeal to you but its forgiving health model does not. In its modern Middle East battles, a single rifle round—or two at most—usually ends a fight. There is no minimap, no constant enemy-marker system and no stream of score pop-ups to tell you what is happening. Voice communication, careful movement and listening for footsteps matter more than reflexively chasing a kill feed.
Vehicles, mortars and commander-controlled airstrikes add operational texture without imposing Squad’s full teamwork tax. You can play regular modes without joining a dedicated milsim group, yet the lethality teaches you to clear angles, conserve ammunition and respect suppression. It is a premium game on PC and consoles; check the current store listing for the console edition available in your region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Squad — when communication is the combat system
Squad is the strongest answer to “I want to feel like I am in a real operation.” Every battle is built around 50-versus-50 teams—100 soldiers in total—across 13 factions and more than 20 maps. Roles include Rifleman, Medic, Machine Gunner, Marksman and Squad Leader, with vehicles, logistics trucks, artillery and commander assets supporting the infantry.
The defining feature is its radio structure. Local voice, squad channels and command-level communication force leaders and radio operators to pass information between separate networks instead of relying on a universal enemy marker. A veteran assessment in We Are The Mighty singled out those segmented channels as unusually close to the way real platoons manage radio traffic. Offworld Industries calls the design “Arcade shooter meets military sim”; its official Squad site lists the 50-versus-50 structure and factions.

Squad is currently a PC purchase through Steam and the publisher’s store. Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 versions have been announced, but the official homepage had no public release date when checked. It is not a good fit if you want to queue alone, ignore voice chat or respawn instantly into another duel. It is an excellent fit if you enjoy logistics, coordinated assaults and a victory condition that depends on holding territory rather than topping the scoreboard.
5. Arma Reforger — the accessible military sandbox
Arma Reforger is the bridge between a mainstream shooter and the full Arma simulation. Set during a Cold War crisis on Everon, it offers Conflict, Combat Ops and Game Master modes on Bohemia Interactive’s Enfusion engine. Conflict combines infantry, vehicles, bases, supplies and radio coordination; Game Master lets a human director build scenarios while others play them.
Reforger is the first Arma entry to bring authentic combat to PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5, and it is the current console-capable route into the series. Bohemia describes it as a milestone on the road to Arma 4. Update 1.8 arrived in August 2026, with experimental 1.9 patches in September. The official Arma Reforger site is the best place to verify current builds and platform support.
Compared with Modern Warfare, Reforger slows everything down: identifying a target may take longer than firing, navigation matters, and a vehicle or supply problem can decide an entire match. Compared with Arma 3, it has a smaller ecosystem and a more focused Cold War setting, but its interface and console support make the learning curve less intimidating.
6. Arma 3 — the deepest PC military simulation
Arma 3 remains the most expansive choice for players who want a military sandbox rather than a fixed playlist. Its combined-arms missions model suppression, ballistics, vehicles, air support and large terrains, while the mission editor and years of community modifications provide scenarios far beyond the base game. A 2025 assessment reported that it still drew around 4,000 players most nights.
The technology is more than a marketing comparison: the Arma engine formed the basis of the U.S. Army’s Virtual Battlefield Simulator. That does not make every public server a training exercise, but it explains why the series has such unusual depth. Expect a demanding interface, long periods of movement and a community whose best content often depends on mods. Choose Arma 3 over Reforger if PC modding and maximum sandbox breadth matter more than modern graphics or console access. Visit the official Arma 3 site for the current edition and DLC catalogue.

7. Ready or Not — deliberate SWAT room clearing
Ready or Not is the closest match for the house-clearing sequences in a Modern Warfare campaign. You command a small SWAT team in the fictional city of Los Sueños, handling hostage rescues, bomb threats and barricaded suspects. Up to five players can coordinate in co-op, with AI teammates available when you play alone.
The realism comes from procedure and accountability. You must identify threats, issue commands, use flashbangs intelligently, restrain compliant suspects and follow rules of engagement instead of simply eliminating every target. Armor coverage, penetration and ammunition selection affect outcomes, and preparation often matters more than raw aim. It is a premium release for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; the publisher’s official site has the current platform information.

This is a CQB game, not a conventional military campaign. There are no 50-versus-50 battles or tanks, and the fictional police setting means it is a poor substitute if you specifically want a conventional-war deployment.
8. Six Days in Fallujah — historically grounded urban combat
Six Days in Fallujah focuses on the 2004 Second Battle of Fallujah rather than a generic modern conflict. Its first-person missions are based on true stories narrated by Marines, Soldiers and Iraqi civilians who lived through the battle. More than 100 contributors supplied photographs, videos and personal time to recreate the events with what the developers call authenticity and respect.
Procedural Architecture reshapes rooms and buildings each time you play, so routes and threats change instead of becoming a memorised speedrun. The Go Command system lets you issue fireteam orders while moving through dense urban spaces. The game remained in Early Access in September 2026, with a late-2026 full-release target that was not a guarantee. Check the official Six Days in Fallujah site for the current roadmap before buying.
Choose it when “realistic modern combat” specifically means Fallujah-style urban fighting. Do not choose it for a finished, broad multiplayer replacement for Modern Warfare; its historical scope and Early Access status are central to the experience.
9. Gray Zone Warfare — open-world extraction with medical consequences
Gray Zone Warfare takes the realism ladder into a persistent, open-world extraction format. Its PvE-first island of Lamang uses hit locations rather than a generic health bar, so a wound’s position affects what you can do. Three playable forces and seven AI factions use distinct equipment, and the weapon-customisation system is unusually granular.
Update 0.5, Rogue Ops, went live in late October 2026; the earlier 0.4 Spearhead update in March reworked combat, movement, health, sound, artificial intelligence and lighting. It remains an Early Access PC game, and contemporary coverage still warns about rough edges. You need to accept long travel, uncertain firefights and the possibility that a failed extraction costs valuable equipment. The official Gray Zone Warfare site tracks updates and access details.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →10. Escape from Tarkov — maximum risk and weapon detail
Escape from Tarkov is for players who want every gunfight to have a financial and medical consequence. You enter raids with equipment that can be lost on death, build weapons through detailed parts systems and treat injuries rather than waiting for an arcade health bar to refill. Ballistics and body-part damage approach simulation more closely than the mainstream alternatives.
It is still technically in beta and deliberately punishing. Learning maps, ammunition types, armour and medical items can take dozens of hours before the game feels readable. This is not the next game to install after a Modern Warfare campaign unless you specifically want extraction anxiety and persistent loss. A free-to-play visual cousin, Arena Breakout: Infinite, follows the same broad extraction idea but is not a direct replacement for Tarkov’s PC ecosystem.

11. Rainbow Six Siege — tactical chess at 5v5 scale
Rainbow Six Siege is the right choice for Modern Warfare players who mainly enjoyed Search and Destroy and want every round to become a planning puzzle. Attackers use drones and breaching tools; defenders reinforce and reshape walls, ceilings and floors. The 5v5 format rewards information, crossfires and operator combinations rather than map-wide logistics.
Its Siege X update gave the game a second life in 2025. Core modes are available through a hybrid free model, while the full operator and ranked experience is tied to paid access or progression. It is counterterrorism CQB, not a campaign about conventional armies, and its operator abilities make it less physically realistic than Insurgency or Squad. Current platform information is on Ubisoft’s Siege page.

Hell Let Loose proves that realism is not limited to modern weapons. Its 50-versus-50 WWII battles use commanders, officers, garrisons and supply nodes to connect frontline infantry with the wider operation. Maps range from El Alamein and Utah Beach to Hürtgen Forest, and a 2025 journalist snapshot put its nightly population above 5,000.
The voice hierarchy and logistics can feel more authentic than many modern shooters, but the setting is the decisive caveat: this is World War II, not a Modern Warfare analogue. Choose it when your priority is large-scale teamwork and historical atmosphere. If you want a free WWII alternative, Enlisted lets you command an AI squad; Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is another period-specific option, though its current population and support vary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What kind of realism are you actually looking for?
Use these four axes before choosing. They prevent a visually impressive game from being mistaken for a simulation.
| Axis | Modern Warfare-style end | Simulation end | Best matches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel versus systems | Fast aim, respawns, readable HUD | Ballistics, suppression, medical and supply systems | Battlefield 6 or Delta Force versus Arma, Squad or Gray Zone Warfare |
| Scale | 5v5 or small CQB teams | 50v50 or combined arms | Ready or Not and Siege versus Squad, Hell Let Loose and Battlefield 6 |
| Lethality and HUD | Longer firefights, minimaps and markers | One- or two-shot deaths and limited information | Battlefield 6 versus Insurgency, Squad and Arma |
| Teamwork tax | Solo campaign or AI companions | Voice communication and defined roles | Ready or Not versus Squad and Hell Let Loose |
| Persistence | Round resets and no lasting loss | Gear, wounds or territory carry consequences | Battlefield 6 versus Tarkov and Gray Zone Warfare |
Jonathan Reed of DTP Tips summarised the issue accurately: “Photorealism is not the same as simulation.” Bodycam, an Early Access title built around wearable-camera effects, is a visual-realism experiment. Unrecord remained unreleased with no confirmed date as of September 2026, and Kingmakers was still listed as coming soon; neither should be treated as a playable Modern Warfare alternative simply because trailers look convincing.

Which free games are worth downloading?
- Delta Force: the most complete free modern-war package, with Warfare, Operations and a campaign.
- Battlefield REDSEC: a free battle royale in the Battlefield 6 universe, best for players who want that weapon handling and presentation.
- Rainbow Six Siege: free core modes, with the broader operator and ranked structure behind the hybrid model.
- Enlisted: free WWII battles in which you command an AI squad rather than a single soldier.
- Warzone: the polished free Call of Duty battle royale, but its realism score is low; it gives you more CoD rather than a more authentic military model.
- Halo Infinite multiplayer: free and well supported, but only relevant if leaving modern military settings for science fiction is acceptable.
Free access does not mean equal simulation depth. Delta Force is the practical first download; Squad, Arma and Tarkov require a paid commitment because their value comes from complex systems and long-term communities.
What should I play for a Modern Warfare-style campaign?
For a contemporary story, Delta Force’s Black Hawk Down campaign is the obvious free option, while Battlefield 6 offers the largest current blockbuster campaign with its 2027 Marine Raiders storyline. Medal of Honor (2010) remains a compact Tier 1 story set during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan, although its multiplayer servers are effectively a historical footnote. Battlefield 1 provides strong standalone War Stories, and Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway is worth choosing if you prefer suppress-and-flank tactics in a WWII campaign.

These games satisfy the story itch but should not be sold as replacements for a current multiplayer ecosystem. A campaign can deliver authored set pieces and AI squadmates without modelling the communication, logistics or persistent consequences found in a milsim.
What do Early Access and platform caveats change?
Six Days in Fallujah and Gray Zone Warfare are still Early Access, so their roadmaps, bugs, balance and content volume can change. Six Days had a late-2026 full-release target, not a guaranteed date; Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.5 Rogue Ops update was current in late October 2026, but its developers continue to iterate on core systems. Buy either because the existing build appeals to you, not because a future feature is promised.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Squad is currently the safest PC purchase for 100-player modern teamwork, while console players should verify release timing before planning around its announced versions. Arma Reforger is the reliable console-accessible milsim today. Battlefield 6, Ready or Not and Hell Let Loose have current PC and current-generation console editions listed in the available data, but regional storefronts can differ.
What PC and communication setup do these games need?
Arma Reforger, Gray Zone Warfare, Battlefield 6 and Six Days in Fallujah are commonly grouped among demanding modern shooters, particularly where large maps, simulation systems or Unreal Engine 5 assets are involved. Universal frame-rate figures are not available, so use each game’s current system-requirements page rather than relying on a generic “gaming PC” label. Keep graphics drivers, storage space and background processes under control, but do not treat an optimizer as a guaranteed FPS increase.
A microphone is optional for Battlefield 6 and Ready or Not, but it is practically part of the equipment list for Squad and Hell Let Loose. In those games, a clear callout about a vehicle, enemy position or supply route can matter more than a faster mouse. If you dislike speaking to strangers, start with Insurgency’s smaller modes, Ready or Not with AI, or Battlefield 6 before attempting a communication-heavy 50v50 server.
How we picked these recommendations
The ranking weighs five evidence-based criteria: how closely each game matches Modern Warfare’s modern setting and weapon feel; how much simulation it adds through lethality, ballistics, medical or logistics systems; battle scale; solo and co-op accessibility; and whether its current platform or Early Access status makes the recommendation practical in November 2026. It also separates historical games from present-day combat and does not treat photorealistic rendering as proof of military authenticity. Player counts cited above are journalist snapshots, not independently audited live telemetry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Squad without joining a milsim clan?
Yes, public servers are the normal entry point, and you do not need a private unit to start. You will still be expected to use a microphone, follow a squad leader and accept that a round may involve long movements or logistical work before a firefight.
Is Gray Zone Warfare finished enough to buy in 2026?
It is playable in Early Access, with the Rogue Ops 0.5 update live in late October 2026, but it is not a finished product. Expect changing balance, bugs and unfinished systems; buy it only if you are comfortable with an evolving PvE-first extraction game.
Does Arma Reforger support mods on consoles?
Reforger was designed around Bohemia’s Workshop ecosystem as well as its built-in modes, and it is the Arma entry with official Xbox and PlayStation 5 support. Mod availability, storage limits and approval can differ by platform, so check the in-game Workshop rather than assuming every PC scenario is available.
Which game is best for realistic combat but short sessions?
Ready or Not is the most practical choice for contained sessions: a mission can focus on one building, a few objectives and a small co-op team. Rainbow Six Siege also delivers short rounds, but its operator abilities and competitive structure make it more tactical than physically realistic.
