WARDOGS Server Types Explained: Hosted, Dedicated and Community Compared

Hosted, dedicated and community describe different attributes of a WARDOGS server, not three mutually exclusive choices. Hosted tells you who supplies the infrastructure; dedicated describes the server arrangement; community means a player group operates the server and sets its local rules. A rented community server can therefore run on dedicated infrastructure. For most players, the practical choice is between Bulkhead’s Official servers and Community servers. For prospective administrators, the documented route is to select a currently approved hosting partner rather than assume that a home machine, generic VPS or downloaded server package will work.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Checked
Hosted Communities that want a provider to supply the infrastructure Describes where the server runs and who provides its infrastructure; it may still be community-operated Oct 2026
Dedicated Readers comparing infrastructure arrangements Describes dedicated server infrastructure, not moderation authority or permission to install WARDOGS software Oct 2026
Community Players who want locally chosen rules and moderation A player or community runs the server and can set local rules, kick and ban locally; Bulkhead anti-cheat still applies Oct 2026

What do “hosted,” “dedicated” and “community” mean in WARDOGS?

They answer different questions. “Hosted” concerns the supplier and location of the infrastructure, “dedicated” concerns the infrastructure arrangement, and “community” concerns who operates the match and makes local rules. Treating them as three competing server buttons creates confusion because one server can fit more than one label.

Hosted: who supplies the infrastructure?

A hosted server runs on infrastructure supplied by a hosting company or another service provider. The provider may handle deployment, the physical or virtual machines, networking and support, while a player group controls the WARDOGS community that uses the server. “Hosted” does not by itself tell you whether the server is Official or Community, how many slots it has, or which rules an administrator uses.

Dedicated: how is the infrastructure arranged?

Dedicated describes an infrastructure arrangement in which server resources are assigned to that service rather than being presented as an ordinary shared game session. It does not mean Bulkhead has granted you the WARDOGS server software, and it does not say who moderates players. Buying a dedicated machine, a NAS or a general-purpose VPS is therefore not proof that you can install and run WARDOGS on it.

Community: who sets local rules?

A Community server is run by a player, clan or other group rather than as Bulkhead’s own Official service. Bulkhead’s Player Safety guidance says that the people running a server set their own rules and can kick or ban players from it. Those powers apply to that community server; they are not a publisher-wide ban automatically carried across every server.

Is a community server also a dedicated server?

It can be. A community operator may rent dedicated infrastructure from an approved host, making the server both community-operated and hosted on dedicated resources. Conversely, the word “dedicated” alone does not establish that a player community controls the rules; only the operator and server listing can tell you that.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters when comparing adverts. A provider’s infrastructure label is not a promise about moderation, and a community label is not a guarantee of a particular processor, location, slot count or uptime. Ask which attribute the description is actually making.

What is the practical difference between Official and Community servers?

Official and Community are the useful operational categories when you are deciding what to join. Bulkhead operates Official servers; a player or community rents or runs a Community server and controls its local rules.

Question Official server Community server
Who operates it? Bulkhead’s official service A player or community; a hosting company may supply the infrastructure
Who sets local rules? Publisher governance Community operators set local rules and can kick or ban on that server
Where is it listed? Official browser list Community browser list
Does publisher anti-cheat apply? Yes Yes; community hosting does not switch it off

For a joiner, compare the displayed mode, server location or ping, occupancy, availability and the community’s published rules. A Community server can be configured differently from another Community server, so do not infer identical settings from the label alone.

How do I find and join a WARDOGS Community server?

Use the in-game browser and verify the listing before joining. Dated September patch accounts describe separate Official and Community lists, text search, persistent server IDs and controls for empty or full listings; later Deploy-flow labels also signposted Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level choices. Interface labels can change, so confirm the current options in your client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the server browser or Deploy flow. Choose the Community category when the current client presents separate Official and Community lists.
  2. Search deliberately. Use the text search or a persistent server ID if the operator supplied one. This is more reliable than assuming a similarly named server is the same community.
  3. Check occupancy and availability. Apply empty/full filters where available, then inspect the displayed player count and whether the server is joinable.
  4. Read the local rules. Look for restrictions on voice chat, conduct, squad organization or other settings before committing to a match.
  5. Confirm the mode signpost. Infantry Mode and Low-Level are mode or experience labels, not ownership classes or hardware tiers.
  6. Join and keep the server identity. If the community uses a persistent ID or a named rules page, save it so you can distinguish that server from similarly named listings later.

Who can kick, ban or report me on a Community server?

The local operator can enforce that server’s rules by kicking or banning you from that server. Bulkhead’s online anti-cheat and reporting policy still covers Community servers, so community hosting is not a way around publisher enforcement.

Expect two layers of authority: the community’s local moderation and Bulkhead’s platform-wide safety systems. A local ban does not automatically mean a Bulkhead account sanction, while a publisher action is not something a community administrator can reverse.

Can I host a WARDOGS dedicated server myself?

Do not assume that you can install WARDOGS on a personal dedicated machine. A third-party hosting guide updated October 25, 2026, reported no public standalone WARDOGS server package and no SteamCMD server app ID. The publisher pages reviewed do not establish a permanent ban on self-hosting, but they also do not document a supported independent-install route.

The safe, current interpretation is practical rather than absolute: start with the publisher’s approved-hosting directory and current terms. A physical server, home broadband connection, NAS or generic VPS may be perfectly capable hardware in the abstract, yet still lack the authorized software, deployment process or support needed for WARDOGS.

How do I rent an approved Community server?

Use the live directory on Bulkhead’s ServerHub and check the hosting partner’s current WARDOGS offering. The publisher page visibly separates an approved-partners area from a Server Admin Hub, while host names and availability can change dynamically.

  1. Open the live approved-hosting directory. Treat it as the current authority instead of relying on an old article’s list.
  2. Confirm the game and region. Select a WARDOGS plan and a deployable location that suits the players you expect to join.
  3. Choose the slot tier and admin tools. Compare the advertised capacity, controls, support and terms; do not infer a universal slot limit from one provider.
  4. Read moderation and cancellation terms. You remain responsible for the community’s local rules even when the host supplies the machines and support.
  5. Record the server identity. Share its persistent ID or exact listing name so players can find the intended Community server.

As a provider-specific example, 1of1 Servers advertised 60-, 80- and 100-player slots and listed Ashburn and Dallas as deployable US locations in 2026. Those are that provider’s advertised tiers and locations, not a universal WARDOGS specification or a promise that every approved host offers the same choices.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

A dated guide recorded Bulkhead naming QONZER, BisectHosting and xREALM in September, then GG Host and 1of1 Servers in October. Because the guide also noted a discrepancy between its October 29 directory check and the combined historic announcements, an older host list should not be treated as definitive; an omitted company may simply reflect a changed or dynamically displayed directory.

Do “Infantry Mode” and “Low-Level” identify server ownership?

No. Those labels are mode or matchmaking signposts reported in a later Deploy flow, not synonyms for Hosted, Dedicated, Official or Community. Use them to understand the type of match being advertised, while checking the separate ownership category and the server’s own rules.

Which server type should I choose?

Choose according to the control you need, not the most technical-sounding label.

  • Choose Official when you want Bulkhead-operated governance and do not need a private community’s custom rules.
  • Choose Community when a group’s local rules, recurring players or administrator presence matter more than a publisher-run listing.
  • Look for hosted community infrastructure when you want your group to operate the rules without maintaining the underlying machines yourself.
  • Treat “dedicated” as an infrastructure detail until the listing or host explains exactly what resources, controls and support are included.

There is no established independent study showing that one of these labels guarantees lower latency, higher uptime or a lower cheat rate. Location, configuration, player population and the host’s terms are separate questions that must be checked on the specific listing.

How this comparison was framed

The distinctions use six practical tests: who operates the service, who supplies infrastructure, who sets local rules, where the listing appears, whether Bulkhead anti-cheat still applies and how a prospective administrator obtains an approved deployment. This separates terminology from the actual decisions a player or community administrator must make, without treating a provider’s marketing tier as a publisher-wide specification.

FAQ: WARDOGS server terminology

Where do reports from a Community server go?

Bulkhead handles in-game reports for both Official and Community servers, rather than routing them directly to the local server operator. The community administrator can still enforce local rules with a kick or server ban.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every WARDOGS server have 100 player slots?

Steam’s Bulkhead-authored WARDOGS listing describes 100 players across three teams for the game. That description is not proof that every individual server has 100 slots; providers advertise their own tiers, such as the 60-, 80- and 100-slot options listed by 1of1 Servers.

Do I need a headset to use a Community server?

No hosting permission depends on owning a headset. Bulkhead documents in-game voice chat, so a PC gaming headset with a microphone can help squad coordination, but it is an optional playing accessory and does not provide server software or administrative rights.
