Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is a bigger and more varied boomer shooter than the original, but its occasional enemy and boss pathfinding failures keep the sequel from matching its gunplay with equally sharp AI. Auroch Digital’s single-player follow-up delivers fast movement, spectacular gore, two fundamentally different protagonists, broader levels and a larger Chaos bestiary. Missions move through spaceships and Imperial facilities, Nurgle-mutated swamps, Khorne fortresses and buildings collapsing into rising magma. The campaign branches once per playthrough, allowing an alternate route that can expose optional chapters and additional collectibles.

What weapons and enemies are in the game?
The sequel keeps the direct loop of running through large, chapter-based missions, finding weapons and power-ups, collecting secrets and killing everything along the route. Steam lists new weapons and enemies, a branching campaign, an optional navigation guide and an automap.
The expanded bestiary includes cultists, Chaos Space Marines aligned with every Chaos god, daemon hordes, Greater Daemons, Bloodletters, Daemonettes and Noise Marines, alongside other encounters. Factions tied to Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne and Slaanesh give the environments and enemy groups distinct visual themes. Harder difficulties make survival and movement more demanding, although the reported geometry bugs can still make an encounter easier than intended.
What changed from the first game?
The sequel broadens the weapon roster, level scale and character choice instead of abandoning the original’s simple, aggressive rhythm. How long is Boltgun 2, and what is the replay value?
A Normal playthrough takes about 6–10 hours. That is a compact campaign by modern shooter standards, but each run can take a different branch, and the two protagonists have separate movement options and weapon identities. Collectibles, optional chapters and higher difficulty settings provide additional reasons to revisit missions rather than simply repeating the same route.
What are the graphics and performance like?
Boltgun 2 uses a polished 1990s-inspired 2.5D style: crisp 2D sprites are layered over 3D environments filled with gothic fortresses, temples and corrupted biomes. Lead artist Mark Chambers described the visual goal as “nice crisp pixels being blasted across the screen at an accelerated pace.” The production process starts with 3D models, captures eight camera directions, converts them into sprite sheets with several material channels and projects them onto billboard planes.
Windows Central reported a consistent 60 frames per second at 1080p in its Xbox Series X test, including heavy explosions and large enemy crowds. That is a source-reported result for that platform and test, not a guarantee for every system.
