In Warhammer Fantasy, The Old World, and Age of Sigmar, a Chaos champion is a mortal who gives body and spirit to one Chaos God or to Chaos as a whole. A patron may grant a Mark, gifts, mutations, a warband and, after extraordinary victories, daemonhood. Failure can instead end in death or transformation into a Chaos Spawn. “Champion” therefore describes a role and a progression, not one boxed army.

For a new Age of Sigmar collection, the clearest entry is Spearhead: Darkoath Raiders, a 26-model Darkoath force led by a Warqueen. Archaon the Everchosen is the setting’s ultimate named champion and an imposing later centrepiece, but not the sensible first purchase for most players. The four classic gods still shape the range, while Darkoath provides the current mortal, oath-bound starting point.

What are Chaos champions in Warhammer?

Chaos champions are ambitious servants of the Ruinous Powers. They may be warriors, sorcerers, tribal leaders or warlords who seek power through conquest, sacrifice and allegiance. A champion can pledge to Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh or Tzeentch, serve Chaos Undivided, or follow a more indirect tradition such as the Darkoath.

The miniature range has reflected that idea for decades. Games Workshop says, “Chaos was present from the very beginning of Warhammer Fantasy Battles in 1983, but it was the 1990s that ushered in a plethora of new Champion models directly themed to each of the gods.” Armour, trophies, mutations and silhouettes began advertising a model’s patron before a player read its rules.

The word is broader than a single unit entry. It can mean a god-marked Chaos Warrior, a named lord such as Archaon, a Darkoath Warqueen or Chieftain, or a squad leader in another setting. In Warhammer 40,000, for example, “champion” usually means a specialist among the traitor Space Marines, not a Mortal Realms warlord.

What factions do Chaos champions belong to?

The faction choice is principally a choice of patron, visual language and narrative destination. Age of Sigmar’s current Chaos navigation includes the four god armies, Slaves to Darkness, and adjacent Chaos powers such as Hashut and the Great Horned Rat.

The four classic Chaos Gods

Patron Champion identity Age of Sigmar collecting routes
Khorne Martial aggression, trophies and direct combat Blades of Khorne, or Slaves to Darkness models with the Mark of Khorne
Nurgle Decay, disease, corrosion and endurance Maggotkin of Nurgle, or Slaves to Darkness with the Mark of Nurgle
Slaanesh Excess, sensation, speed and theatrical ornament Hedonites of Slaanesh, or Slaves to Darkness with the Mark of Slaanesh
Tzeentch Change, sorcery and unstable transformation Disciples of Tzeentch, or Slaves to Darkness with the Mark of Tzeentch

Slaves to Darkness lets a collection use these identities without becoming a single-god army. Studio commentary describes Khorne as a way to give cavalry more punch, Nurgle as a durability choice for infantry, Tzeentch as protection against hostile magic, and Slaanesh as a way to reach combat quickly. Exact abilities and restrictions belong to the current battletome and faction pack.

Chaos Undivided and the Everchosen

Chaos Undivided means service to the pantheon rather than exclusive devotion to one god. Some lords and Archaon carry that allegiance, and the 2024 faction focus used an Undivided example that improved wound rolls against Heroes and Monsters.

The Everchosen is a title of supreme Chaos leadership, not a fifth god and not simply another army keyword. Archaon holds it after surpassing earlier claimants in Games Workshop’s account. The title represents command over the grand Chaos host, while individual units may still bear different Marks.

Darkoath

Darkoath are the Mortal Realms’ developed marauder culture and the most approachable mortal expression of the champion story. Their leaders swear oaths to territorial spirits, which are described as minor aspects of the Ruinous Powers, rather than directly worshipping the four gods. Games Workshop summarizes the distinction this way: “They do not directly worship the Chaos Gods, instead pledging oaths to spirits who guard their territory – and in fact, minor aspects of the Ruinous Powers.”

Darkoath tribes are proud, kin-bound and hostile to Sigmar’s settlements. Their Warqueens and Chieftains are still climbing, so they provide a different narrative from Archaon, who is already at the summit.

Other Chaos factions

The current Age of Sigmar roster also lists the Helsmiths of Hashut, a Chaos Duardin power, and Skaven, whose Great Horned Rat became a fifth Chaos God in Games Workshop’s 2024 wording. They are genuine Chaos factions, but they are not part of the seven miniature families highlighted in the 2026 “Chaos Champions through the ages” feature: Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, Tzeentch, Chaos Undivided, the Everchosen and Darkoath.

How do Chaos champion rules work in Age of Sigmar?

The central idea is the Path to Glory: a champion earns advancement through deeds and atrocities under the Eye of the Gods. Games Workshop describes the ladder as applying “From the lowest Darkoath tribesperson to the most powerful Chaos Lord.” It is both a narrative campaign framework and the clearest explanation of why Chaos armies are full of evolving characters.

Eye of the Gods and gifts

In the 2024 faction focus, a unit that has triumphed over another can receive an Eye of the Gods result at the end of a turn, unless it is Snubbed by the Gods. The named examples included Mutative Regrowth, Unnatural Grace, Lurid Aura and Slaughterer’s Might. A true Champion of Chaos can choose the gift rather than accept a random result; the studio statement is explicit: “A true Champion of Chaos even gets to ask his gods exactly which gift they desire – and they all stack.”

Older Slaves to Darkness lore gives the possible direction of the journey: Spawndom, physical enhancements such as Iron Flesh or Unholy Resilience, god-specific gifts, and finally Dark Apotheosis. The exact table, trigger and terminology can change between battletomes and seasons, so use the current Warhammer app, battletome and faction pack when building a campaign.

Marks of Chaos

Marks formalize a model’s allegiance. The 2024 commentary used a 4+ Tzeentch ward against spell and manifestation abilities as an example, while an Undivided path improved attacks against Heroes and Monsters. Marks are not merely paint schemes: they determine which rules a unit can access and how it interacts with formations and heroes.

Battle formations and Darkoath mechanics

The 2024 faction focus discussed the Godswrath Warband, territory claims by mixed warlords, Daemon Prince monster durability and reinforcement waves led by Darkoath Chieftains. Darkoath Marauders can use Oath of the Marauder for armour-cracking attacks and Glorious Death to inflict mortal damage when they die near a Darkoath Hero. These examples explain the play pattern without replacing the current warscrolls.

Can every Darkoath warrior become a Daemon Prince?

No. The Path to Glory is a risk, not a guaranteed promotion system. Champions who fail the gods’ tests can become Chaos Spawn, while only a small number achieve daemonhood. Age of Sigmar Lexicanum summarizes the stakes: “Those who set out on the Path to Glory risk being cursed to an existence as Chaos Spawn or potentially see themselves rise to Daemon Princedom.”

That uncertainty is the point of the narrative. A Warqueen can gain status, gifts and a larger warband while remaining mortal; another champion may be rewarded with apotheosis; a third may be reduced to a malformed creature. Daemon Princes and Chaos Spawn therefore work as the two extreme outcomes of the same story rather than automatic next steps for every model.

Who is Archaon, and is he a Chaos God?

Archaon is not a Chaos God. He is the Everchosen, a mortal-origin champion who commands the largest Chaos forces and stands at the pinnacle of the Path to Glory. Games Workshop calls him “the greatest Warhammer champion of them all” and identifies him as Grand Marshal of the Apocalypse.

He ended the World-that-Was, retained his powers in the Mortal Realms and rules from the Varanspire in the Allpoints. He rides Dorghar, a daemonic steed, and is hostile to all four classic gods as well as Sigmar. A community list-construction report for the General’s Handbook 2026–27 treated Archaon as a 780-point general; that is not a Games Workshop points manual, and points can change with a battlescroll.

How is Be’lakor different?

Be’lakor is the First Daemon Prince, not one of the four gods and not the Everchosen. His arrogance cost him the title; Games Workshop writes, “Through his arrogance he was denied the mantle of Everchosen, fated only to crown his successors.” He works through shadow, manipulation and the Legion of the First Prince, while Archaon rules openly. Eternus is Be’lakor’s army champion in the current Slaves to Darkness context.

Where should I start with Chaos champions?

Choose the story first, then the scale of purchase. For most newcomers who want mortal champions and an immediate game, Darkoath Raiders Spearhead is the practical starting point.

Starting point What it gives you Best for Important limitation
Darkoath Raiders Spearhead Warqueen, 5 Fellriders, 10 Savagers and 10 Marauders A complete first Spearhead and the beginning of a Slaves to Darkness army Rules, points and retail stock change; expand with the current battletome for larger games
Archaon the Everchosen A large Dorghar-mounted named centrepiece Collectors who want the setting’s greatest champion Expensive model, high painting workload and a demanding rules load for a first army
Darkoath Warqueen or Chieftain A single mortal leader and character study Painting practice or a small narrative project A character alone is not a complete force
Single-god army Blades of Khorne, Maggotkin, Hedonites or Disciples of Tzeentch Players who want every model to advertise one patron Less flexible than a mixed Slaves to Darkness collection
Chaos Warriors or Knights Armoured champions and heavy cavalry Old World or classic hellforged armour aesthetics Different game ecosystems and army requirements from Darkoath Spearhead

The Darkoath Raiders box contains 26 plastic miniatures and 291 components: one Warqueen, five Fellriders, ten Savagers and ten Marauders. Its kit identifier is 70-836 and its barcode is 5011921220953. At the 2024 launch it was described as about 500 points for Age of Sigmar matched play, but that figure is edition-volatile.

US launch retail was reported at $145. Later US street listings ranged from about $123 to $156, while a captured UK Amazon listing showed about £83.45. Those are retailer snapshots checked in October 2026, not a guaranteed Games Workshop RRP; confirm price and stock before buying.

What is in the Darkoath Raiders Spearhead?

Darkoath Raiders rules to know

  • Oaths to Darkness: once per turn, reveal a battle tactic card as an oath. If you score it, keep that command available without counting it toward the three-card hand.
  • Rage of Arkhar: give a unit in combat +1 Rend, excluding Companion weapons.
  • Fearless Invaders: a unit can Retreat without suffering mortal damage and still Charge.
  • Oath of Supremacy: the Warqueen gives a friendly unit wholly within 12 inches +1 to hit until your next turn.
  • Visions of Glory: the Savagers’ Godspeaker rolls eight dice; each 6 permits one of the listed re-rolls.
  • Reinforcements: Marauders can return to the battle through the Reinforcements keyword in this Spearhead format.

These rules make the box play as a fast, aggressive raiding force rather than a static block of armoured infantry. Read the current downloadable rules alongside the box contents, because seasonal updates can change legal tactics and points.

Which Chaos champion miniature should I buy or paint?

For a full army, choose Darkoath Raiders. For a named statement model, choose Archaon. For a single-character painting project, choose a Darkoath Warqueen or Chieftain. The Warhammer Day 2026 miniature Oath Fulfilled is a scarred Darkoath Warqueen available in stores for the weekend of Saturday, 31 October 2026; Games Workshop describes her as “covered in scars and battle damage from her many conquests.” It is a commemorative, store-timed sculpt, not the general starter box, and later webstore availability was not established.

Classic Chaos Warriors and Knights suit painters who prefer layered plate, shields and heavy weapons. A Daemon Prince represents the successful extreme of the Path to Glory, while a Chaos Spawn is the visual warning of failure. Use the current Citadel range and the manufacturer’s painting guidance for colour choices; retailer recipes are suggestions, not rules.

How are Fantasy Chaos champions different from Chaos Space Marines?

They share gods and some vocabulary, but they are different settings and armies. Fantasy and Age of Sigmar champions include Darkoath tribespeople, Chaos Warriors, sorcerers, Daemon Princes and Archaon. Warhammer 40,000 champions are primarily traitor Space Marines: Aspiring Champions, Exalted Champions, Skull Champions, Plague Champions and similar specialists in power armour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eleventh-edition 40,000 Chaos Faction Packs list detachments such as Cabal of Chaos, Devotees of Destruction and Murdertalon Raiders. Those rules do not transfer to the Mortal Realms. Dorghar, Darkoath oaths, the Eye of the Gods and the Path to Glory are fantasy concepts.

Is the 2018 Warhammer Champions card game the same thing?

No. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Champions is a 2018 living-card game, not a miniature army. Its comprehensive rules describe 38-card constructed decks, four separate Champion cards and four Alliances: Chaos, Death, Destruction and Order. Searching for “Chaos Champions” can therefore produce card-game results that have nothing to do with Slaves to Darkness miniatures.

What is the current matched-play picture for Slaves to Darkness?

Community commentary around the General’s Handbook 2026–27 describes three broad approaches: Darkoath infantry waves, Daemon Prince or monster lists, and “Herohammer” armies built around Archaon or Be’lakor. A primer updated on 28 October 2026 mentioned Gunnar Brand, Savagers and a Daemon Prince in Darkoath-oriented lists, while treating Archaon as a costly centrepiece around which the army must be built.

These are list-building observations, not official win-rate statistics. Games Workshop has not published a 2026 census of Chaos players or an original-publisher Slaves to Darkness win-rate table for this handbook. The latest Battlescroll was dated 23 September 2026, and the rules primer was updated 28 October 2026, so check those documents before locking in a competitive list.

How we picked the starting options

The recommendations follow four practical criteria: the patron and story a player wants, the size of the first purchase, the game format, and the visual commitment of the models. Darkoath Raiders ranks first because it is a complete Spearhead force and introduces the mortal Path to Glory without requiring an Archaon-sized investment. Archaon ranks as the centrepiece rather than the starter because his cost, model size and rules burden are substantially higher. Single-god armies rank separately because they answer a different desire: absolute devotion to one patron.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to play a Path to Glory campaign to use Chaos champions?

No. Path to Glory is the narrative framework that explains a champion’s rise, gifts and possible mutations, but Slaves to Darkness and Darkoath models can also be used in Spearhead or matched play. A campaign adds progression and consequences rather than acting as a purchase requirement.

Can I mix Darkoath and Chaos Warriors in one army?

Slaves to Darkness is the Age of Sigmar army designed to contain both mortal Darkoath and armoured Chaos forces, subject to the current battletome and faction-pack restrictions. Check the latest army rules before combining units, because eligibility and points are updated over time.

How often should I recheck Chaos champion points?

Recheck the Warhammer app, the current General’s Handbook and the latest Battlescroll whenever a season or balance update arrives. The 780-point Archaon figure circulated in a 2026 community list is not a permanent official value.

Will Oath Fulfilled remain available after Warhammer Day 2026?

Its confirmed availability was the in-store Warhammer Day weekend beginning 31 October 2026. A later general webstore release was not established, so collectors should verify availability with Games Workshop or a local store rather than assume the miniature is an evergreen kit.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
