Nintendo’s June 2026 announcement identifies The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as returning in 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2; its September 2026 announcement includes a new open-world 3D Kirby game, not a new Zelda reveal.
What Nintendo announced about Zelda
Nintendo’s June 9, 2026 Direct announcement says The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is returning for a new generation in 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement does not describe it as a new open-world Zelda game.

That distinction matters: a return of a classic is not the same announcement as a newly revealed entry. The June result does not establish a new Zelda game’s setting, gameplay, release window, or preorder availability beyond the stated 2026 return for Ocarina of Time.
What the September Nintendo Direct revealed
Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 Direct announcement lists Kirby and the World Beyond among its reveals and updates. NME’s September 9 coverage identifies the teased open-world 3D game as a new Kirby title.
#1 Best Overall
- Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
- Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
- Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
- Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
- Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways
That makes a mix-up between Nintendo announcements one plausible explanation for the Zelda headline, but the available announcements do not prove how the claim originated. The supported conclusion is narrower: these September results do not verify a new open-world Zelda teaser.
Why Breath of the Wild does not confirm a new teaser
Nintendo’s June 14, 2016 announcement of Breath of the Wild discussed the game’s open world and its E3 presentation. It documents Zelda’s history with open-world design, but it is not evidence of a new announcement in 2026.

- Confirmed in the cited Nintendo announcement: Ocarina of Time returns in 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
- Not confirmed by the announcements covered here: a new open-world Zelda game or its platform, setting, release date, gameplay, or preorder status.
- Separately identified in September coverage: an open-world 3D Kirby game was teased.
This is a finding about the official announcements located and cited here, not proof that Nintendo has never teased another Zelda project in any communication. A direct Nintendo trailer, post, or announcement would be needed to substantiate a new teaser. No physical product is established as being tied to the alleged Zelda reveal, so an existing game, accessory, or guide should not be presented as part of it.
