What did Mat Piscatella say about Concord?
In comments reported by PlayStation LifeStyle, Piscatella described Concord and its intellectual property as having been “so soundly rejected that one may think it unsalvageable.” But that was a conditional assessment, not a declaration that a revival could never work. He added that, because few people knew the game, “perhaps it could be brought back with a different model and a significant refresh.”

Those remarks framed two possibilities: the launch’s reception could make a comeback impractical, or a substantially changed offer might find an audience. Piscatella was discussing potential, not reporting a Sony plan. PlayStation LifeStyle’s report of Piscatella’s comments.
Can Concord come back as a free-to-play game?
It was a possibility raised by speculation about a different business model, but Sony did not announce it. In its September 3, 2024 shutdown notice, Firewalk game director Ryan Ellis said PlayStation would “explore options, including those that will better reach our players.” That wording left the door open to considering alternatives; it did not say which options would be pursued or promise that Concord would return.

PlayStation announced that the game would go offline beginning September 6, 2024, and that sales would cease immediately. It offered full refunds to purchasers on PS5 and PC; buyers of physical copies from other retailers were directed to seek refunds through those retailers. PlayStation’s shutdown announcement.
What a relaunch would have needed to change
A free-to-play price could have removed the upfront purchase barrier, but it would not by itself have established a durable audience. A relaunch would also have needed a compelling reason for players to try Concord and keep playing amid established multiplayer games. Piscatella’s suggestion included a “significant refresh,” not merely a change in price. The available reporting does not establish what such a refresh would involve or whether it would have been commercially viable.

Why did Concord shut down?
Concord was a paid, 5v5, character-driven first-person shooter set in a science-fiction galaxy. PlayStation and Firewalk launched it globally for PS5 and PC on August 23, 2024. The original offer paired a paid standard edition with planned free post-launch updates and optional cosmetic purchases. Season 1 was planned for October 2024, with the studio working toward a second season in January 2025; these were pre-shutdown plans, not content that players received as scheduled.
One indication of the game’s limited reach on PC was its Steam peak of 697 concurrent players on launch day, a figure WIRED attributed to SteamDB. That is a Steam concurrent-player count—not total sales, all-platform participation, or a complete measure of the audience. WIRED said Sony had not disclosed total sales for the period it covered. That reporting also placed Concord’s $40 upfront price alongside free-to-play competitors. Games industry analyst Simon Carless described a challenge for new entrants: “These are the kind of titles that players socialize with their friends in, and they’re often not motivated to switch games.” This is useful context for the difficulty of drawing players away from established communities, but it does not prove why Concord failed.
Omdia video game analyst Liam Deane called the shutdown unprecedented for a game of Concord’s scale and said the launch was so bad “there was clearly no way back.” That is Deane’s opinion about the prospects at the time, not a confirmed conclusion from PlayStation or proof that a future return was impossible. What Concord’s shutdown means for players now
PlayStation said Concord required an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account; PS5 players also needed a paid PlayStation Plus membership. Because the online game was taken offline, a physical PS5 disc is a collectible rather than a way to access its core multiplayer experience. The shutdown notice directed purchasers to refund processes rather than announcing an offline or private-server version.
The firmest conclusion is narrower than either “Concord is permanently impossible to revive” or “Sony is bringing it back free-to-play”: Piscatella considered a substantially revised return conceivable, while PlayStation said it would explore options. Neither statement confirmed a relaunch, and no specific return plan was announced in the cited 2024 reporting.
