No. A new DCU movie is designed as a fresh entry point, so you can watch it without revisiting Man of Steel, the other DCEU films, the Arrowverse or earlier Batman and Supergirl versions. James Gunn and Peter Safran relaunched the continuity after the DCEU’s 2023 ending, and Gunn says viewers should be able to “dip in and see the story that is up next” without feeling they missed essential information.
The practical rule in November 2026 is simple: start with the movie you want to see. Watch Superman (2025) first only when you want extra context for the developing Superman Saga; add Creature Commandos, Peacemaker and the recommended comics for texture, not as homework.

What is the difference between the DCU and the DCEU?
The DCEU was the earlier shared film continuity that began with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013 and ended as a coherent run with 2023’s The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The Workprint counts 15 theatrical DCEU films from 2013 through 2023. Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman and the events of those movies are not required backstory for the new DCU.
The DCU is the relaunch overseen by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. DC’s 31 January 2023 announcement called the first phase “Gods and Monsters,” with the seven-episode animated series Creature Commandos as its first project and Superman: Legacy—released simply as Superman—as its theatrical foundation. Safran said the chapter was designed to minimize confusion across film and television; Gunn called Superman the foundation of the creative vision.

There are also separate continuity families. DC uses the Elseworlds label for projects outside the shared DCU, including Matt Reeves’ The Batman and The Penguin, and Todd Phillips’ Joker films. The Arrowverse, Nolan’s trilogy, the Burton and Schumacher Batman films, and series such as Smallville have their own histories. A separate continuity can be enjoyable without being preparation for a DCU release.
Do you need to watch anything before Superman (2025)?
No. David Corenswet’s Clark Kent is a new version, not a continuation of Cavill’s character, and the film is not a sequel to Man of Steel or any previous Superman series. The opening text explains when metahumans appeared and establishes that Clark is in his third year as a hero, providing the world information a returning viewer might otherwise expect from earlier movies.
Superman opened in the United States on 11 July 2025. Rotten Tomatoes’ October 2026 listing records an 83% critics’ score and a 90% audience score; those ratings can change. Creature Commandos and Peacemaker season 2 add references, but neither is needed to understand the film. The movie even plays with fan expectations and older Justice League material without requiring viewers to know every previous version.
What is the current DCU release order?
For viewers who want to follow the shared universe from its beginning, release order is also the story order as of late October 2026. It is an optional completionist route, not a prerequisite list.

The next dated theatrical chapter is Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for 9 July 2027. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult return, with Lars Eidinger as Brainiac; Gunn has said Milly Alcock’s Supergirl has a major role. The film belongs to the larger Superman Saga, but Gunn’s stated principle remains that each piece should work on its own.
Which optional shows are worth watching?
Creature Commandos
This animated series is officially the DCU’s starting point, and Gunn wrote all seven episodes announced in DC’s 2023 slate. It introduces characters and institutions that make later references more rewarding. Gunn nevertheless told Entertainment Weekly that it is not as important to the larger story as Superman and Peacemaker, so skip it if animation or its military-monster premise is not your preference.
Peacemaker, season 1 and season 2
Peacemaker is the continuity exception. Season 1 was produced in the old DCEU era, while season 2 is part of the DCU. Gunn says almost all of season 1 is canon, except for the Justice League appearance at the end; season 2 explains what carries over. New viewers can begin with season 2 because episodes provide “Previously in the DCU” recaps, while completionists who enjoy Gunn’s style can watch The Suicide Squad (2021), then season 1, then season 2.
Gunn also said you do not need to watch Superman to understand Peacemaker, even though events in the film feed into the series. The benefit of watching both is added context, not decoded plot information.

Is Superman required before Supergirl?
No, but it is the most useful optional preparation. Gunn explicitly said viewers should not have to see Superman before Supergirl. The 2026 film introduces Kara’s DCU context independently, while Superman establishes the world’s metahuman rules and gives Kara her first appearance in this continuity.
That distinction matters: “not required” means the story supplies what you need, not that the two films are unrelated. ScreenRant’s post-release guidance argues that Supergirl is more enjoyable after Superman, and ComicBookMovie’s June 2026 catch-up advice identifies Superman as the one title to choose if you watch only one. Melissa Benoist’s Arrowverse series, Helen Slater’s 1984 film and Sasha Calle’s version from The Flash are separate portrayals and are not canon to this DCU.

All-Star Superman
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman is the principal optional reading before the 2025 film. The series ran for 12 issues from November 2005 to October 2008; the collected edition is 304 pages. Gunn has repeatedly cited it as an influence on the DCU’s Superman, especially its emphasis on compassion, but the film does not adapt it directly and no prior reading is needed.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the stated comic basis for the 2026 film. Reading it can clarify the story’s emotional and cosmic setup, yet the movie is designed to introduce its own version of Kara. Superman: For All Seasons, Kingdom Come, Fleischer’s Superman shorts, Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited are additional tone references rather than continuity requirements.

Which older DC films and shows can you skip?
All of these are optional viewing for a new DCU movie. Watch them for their individual stories, not to fill a supposed continuity gap.

- Joker (2019), Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), The Batman (2022), The Penguin (2024) and the forthcoming The Batman Part II are separate film continuities.
- Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher’s Batman films (1989–1997) and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012) are unrelated to the DCU Batman.
- Smallville ran 10 seasons and 217 episodes from 2001 to 2011. The Arrowverse spans about 752 episodes across seven series from 2012 to 2024, including Crisis on Infinite Earths. Gotham, Titans, Doom Patrol and Lucifer are likewise separate.
The label “Elseworlds” means outside the shared DCU; it does not mean “required background for the next DCU story.” Conversely, Clayface is a DCU project that happens to be standalone, so continuity label and narrative structure are different questions.

- For a single new release: watch that movie and nothing else. This is the intended entry point.
- For the Superman Saga: watch Superman (2025), then Supergirl if you want the relationship before Man of Tomorrow.
- For every current DCU reference: use release order: Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl, Lanterns, then Clayface.
- For Gunn’s connected corner: add The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 before season 2, accepting the continuity explanation supplied by the later season.
- For literary context: read All-Star Superman before or after the film, and Woman of Tomorrow if Supergirl is your destination.
Could the no-homework rule change?
Yes. Gunn has reserved the right to tighten continuity later, comparing a possible future relationship to Infinity War leading directly into Endgame. He now describes Superman, Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow as a Superman Saga whose pieces are beginning to come together, so optional viewing may become more valuable as that story advances.

That is a warning about future design, not a hidden requirement today. As of November 2026, Gunn’s policy is standalone-first: a new DCU film should explain its own premise, while earlier stories provide extra texture. Release dates, availability and Rotten Tomatoes scores can change, and streaming windows for theatrical films vary by territory. Will Man of Tomorrow require every earlier DCU project?
