Public Windows file inventories associate it with Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and some Windows 10 builds. Recorded versions include 6.2.9200.16384, 6.3.9600.16384, and 10.0.10586.0. These records do not prove that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains the same filename or an additional copy in SysWOW64.

Windows DLLs provide functionality that programs can call while they run. A message naming this file does not necessarily identify the original cause. The application may be failing because the DLL is missing, corrupted, mismatched, or unable to load one of its own dependencies.

Do not assume the error identifies a particular game or application. No authoritative application has been identified as uniquely responsible for this filename.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, depending on Windows Update and disk speed.
This is the safest first repair when the file is absent from the Windows directory, several programs are affected, or the issue appeared after a crash, failed update, cleanup utility, or disk problem.
Microsoft recommends installing pending updates and restarting before using the repair commands.
Install pending Windows updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Repair the Windows image with DISM
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses as a source for protected system files. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.
Check protected files with SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
A successful result normally says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired damaged files. Try opening the affected program again after restarting.
Recommended Free Tools
If DISM fails, or SFC says it could not repair some files, continue to the advanced repair section below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when you are tired of hunting through logs and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is completed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct first-line fix.
Fix 2: Repair the application that shows the error
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes.
If only one older game or application fails while Windows and other programs work normally, the application may be damaged or using an obsolete installer. The error can also be caused by a dependency of the program rather than by windows.help.runtime.dll itself.

Use the application’s own repair function first:
- Open the program’s launcher or setup utility.
- Look for Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar option.
- Complete the process.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program again.
For a Microsoft Store or MSIX application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset.
Reset can remove the application’s local settings or cached data. Back up saves and configuration files first if the program stores them outside cloud synchronization.
If the application still fails, uninstall it through its official installer or Windows Settings, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s original installer or official store. Do not copy windows.help.runtime.dll into the game folder unless the developer specifically provides that instruction.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file, although there is no evidence that this particular DLL is commonly misdetected.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
Windows.Help.Runtime.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its path and details.
Restore a quarantined file only when its location, Microsoft signature, and Windows provenance are credible. Do not restore a file that came from a download folder, temporary directory, or unknown installer.
After reviewing the event:
- Run a Full scan in Windows Security.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Test the affected program.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL from an unofficial source.

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
Verification helps distinguish a missing Windows component from a suspicious file or a program that is looking in the wrong location.
Check the path
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
Windows.Help.Runtime.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Location field.
A file with this name in an application folder, Downloads, or a temporary directory should not automatically be trusted.
Check the digital signature
In the file’s Properties window:
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.
The exact tab or displayed metadata can vary by Windows version. A missing or invalid signature does not prove malware, but it is a reason not to copy or register the file manually.
Check file details
Open the Details tab and review the file version and product information. Known public records include 32-bit or neutral-style records for Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Do not force a recorded version onto a newer installation, and do not infer that a 32-bit record belongs in SysWOW64.

The safest way to restore the correct architecture and build is Windows servicing through DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Time needed: none.
Do not run:
regsvr32 Windows.Help.Runtime.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. Available inventory information for windows.help.runtime.dll does not show ordinary exported functions or establish that it supports that registration process.
You may receive an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the DLL needs a different registration command. It means registration is not an evidence-based repair for this file.
Fix 6: Reinstall a required runtime only when the application identifies it
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
Do not blindly reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or the .NET Framework solely because this filename appears in an error. No authoritative evidence connects windows.help.runtime.dll to a separate redistributable package.
If the application’s official documentation or installer explicitly reports a missing runtime:
- Note the exact runtime name and architecture.
- Download it from Microsoft or the application developer.
- Install the required x86 package for a 32-bit application, x64 package for a 64-bit application, or both when the vendor requires both.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
The DLL’s recorded 32-bit status does not tell you which architecture the failing application uses.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A graphics or storage driver is not an established cause of this specific DLL error. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the failure began after a graphics update, Windows update, crash, or device change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver, or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying which of many installed drivers is stale; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

If SFC cannot repair the file
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
First inspect the CBS log:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Then rerun DISM. If Windows Update cannot provide repair files, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with the mounted or extracted Windows source. The source must match the installed edition, language, and build closely enough for DISM to use it.

After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test the application. Do not manually copy a DLL from another computer unless you are performing an advanced recovery with a known-good, matching Windows image.
If the problem began after an update or software installation
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes.
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a recent update, driver, cleanup utility, or application installation and a restore point exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal files.
If no restore point exists, or corruption continues after restoration, back up personal data and use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation. An in-place repair replaces Windows system files while normally preserving applications and personal files, but you should still create a backup first.
Common causes and the matching fix

FAQ
Is windows.help.runtime.dll a genuine Windows file?
Yes. It has been identified in public Windows inventories as a Microsoft Windows operating-system component. Verify the path and digital signature on the affected computer.
Should I download it from a DLL website?
No. A downloaded file can have the wrong build, architecture, signature, or malware. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a matching Windows installation source.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not automatically. Install a runtime only when the affected application’s official documentation or installer specifically requires it.
Does the error tell me which program is broken?
No. It identifies a file involved in the failed load, not necessarily the original application or the dependency that caused the failure.
Why does the file exist but Windows still report it as missing?
The application may be unable to load a dependency, the file may be corrupted, or the program may be using an incorrect architecture or search path. Repair Windows and the affected application rather than copying another DLL.
Should I put a 32-bit copy in SysWOW64?
No. Public records do not establish a safe manual placement rule for this file. Let Windows servicing restore the correct copy.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the problem clearly started after a recent system change and a suitable restore point is available. Use an in-place Windows repair when corruption persists and other recovery methods fail.
