We Are the Borg is an Esper (white-blue-black) artifact-creature swarm deck. The practical plan is to spend the first turns on mana rocks and inexpensive Borg, establish combat payoffs, then cast the seven-mana Borg Queen to enlarge the entire team and assimilate a creature from an opponent’s library. Most games finish through combat: a growing Locutus token engine, an alpha strike led by One, Borg Evolved, or a one-sided Battle of Wolf 359.

The deck is scheduled for tabletop release on 13 November 2026, so this guide is based on the published 100-card list and rules information available before release, not on tournament or hands-on results.

What is in the We Are the Borg Commander deck?

We Are the Borg is one of four ready-to-play Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Commander decks. Its colors are white, blue and black, and its face commander is The Borg Queen. Locutus of Borg is the secondary named commander in Wizards of the Coast’s product information.

Product Contents Listed MSRP Foil treatment Release Checked
Commander Deck 100-card ready-to-play deck, 32 new-to-Magic cards in the 99, foil borderless face commander, 10 double-sided tokens, reference card and deck box $74.99 Traditional foil face commander; 99 non-foil cards 13 November 2026 tabletop; prerelease events 6–12 November Nov 2026
Collector’s Edition Commander Deck Same 100-card list $159.99 Every card surge foil; surge-foil borderless commander; tokens surge foil on one side and non-foil on the other 13 November 2026 tabletop Nov 2026

The stock list has 38 lands, 23 cards in the artifact card type that are not creatures, 20 creatures, 11 instants, five sorceries and three enchantments. All 20 creatures, including The Borg Queen, are artifact creatures. That detail is the deck’s central construction rule: every “artifact creatures you control” anthem, combat trigger and token payoff applies to the whole creature base, including assimilated creatures and 1/1 Borg tokens.

Kraken the Meta counted 13 mana rocks or other ramp pieces, 14 “artifact creatures you control” payoffs, 10 cards that make Borg tokens and five Assimilate cards. The average non-land mana value is about 3.34, but the commander and several finishers cost six or seven mana, so the curve feels top-heavy if the opening hand lacks acceleration.

How does The Borg Queen work?

The Borg Queen costs {4}{W}{U}{B}, is a 4/4 legendary artifact creature, and has two abilities that define the deck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Global anthem: Artifact creatures you control get +2/+2. The Queen therefore enters as a 6/6 before any other modifier, and every artifact creature you control receives the same bonus.
  • Assimilation trigger: Whenever The Borg Queen enters or attacks, target opponent exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile a creature card. You assimilate that card, and the exiled cards that are not the creature go to the bottom of that library in a random order.

You choose the opponent for each trigger; the target does not have to be the player you attack. In a multiplayer game, point the trigger at the library most likely to contain useful creatures. A creature-light deck gives the trigger little value, so the Queen’s theft plan is strongest against creature-heavy opponents.

Wizards’ marketing copy describes the Queen as pulling creatures from graveyards, but the printed rules text reported by MTG Oracle, Metagame, TurnZero and Kraken the Meta uses the top of an opponent’s library. Graveyard assimilation belongs to cards such as Assimilation Assessor and Assimilate the Wounded. Check the printed card or an official card database when the set releases if you need the final Oracle wording.

How does Assimilate work in MTG Star Trek?

Assimilate is a keyword action, not a temporary control effect. It changes who controls a creature, adds a +1/+1 counter and changes the creature into a Borg artifact creature while preserving its printed abilities.

Assimilating a creature card that is not on the battlefield

Put the creature card onto the battlefield under your control with a +1/+1 counter. It becomes a Borg artifact creature and loses its other creature types. Its printed rules text remains, so an assimilated creature can still have enters-the-battlefield, activated or triggered abilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assimilating a creature already on the battlefield

Gain control of that creature, put a +1/+1 counter on it and apply the same type and card-type change. You can attack with it, block with it, tap it for abilities, equip it or sacrifice it just as with any other creature you control.

Because the result is an artifact creature, the assimilated body immediately qualifies for The Borg Queen, Locutus of Borg, Tempered Steel, Thoughtcast, Skullclamp and similar payoffs. Losing its former creature types can switch off tribal bonuses its previous controller left in play, while retaining the printed abilities can make the stolen creature useful in your strategy.

Other Assimilate cards in the stock list

The Queen is one of five Assimilate cards. Gift of Perfection takes a creature from each opponent’s library. Assimilation Assessor exiles an opponent’s graveyard on entering and can assimilate from it when it attacks. Assimilate the Wounded works from a graveyard. The Best of Both Worlds is temporary: its first chapter assimilates a nonartifact creature an opponent controls, its second chapter gives your artifact creatures +2/+2 until end of turn, and its third chapter exiles the assimilated Borg and returns it to its owner.

What should you do in the first four turns?

Your opening turns should make mana and put artifact creatures on the battlefield. The Queen is a seven-mana spell; trying to cast her on curve without a ramp plan leaves the rest of the hand stranded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn one: Play an untapped colored land when possible. A one-mana Command Subadjunct gives artifact creatures vigilance, allowing them to attack and still tap later. If you have Sol Ring, its acceleration is usually the highest-priority play.
  2. Turn two: Deploy a Talisman, Arcane Signet, Everflowing Chalice, Wayfarer’s Bauble or another two-mana accelerator. Extraction Integrant costs {1}{B}, grants artifact creatures menace and shrinks opposing blockers. Locutus, the One Who Speaks costs two mana and supplies a +1/+1 anthem.
  3. Turn three: Add another rock or an early creature. Locutus of Borg costs {1}{W}{U}{B} and is the key mid-game engine, so prioritize fixing that can produce all three colors. Type-03 Borg Vessel reduces artifact-spell costs by {1}; once it is stationed to seven, it creates a 1/1 Borg whenever you cast a spell.
  4. Turn four: Keep developing the board, or hold interaction if an opponent is about to land a decisive permanent. Ambulatory Reactor lets artifact creatures tap for colorless mana usable only on artifact spells and artifact abilities, which helps convert a wide board into more development.

Do not spend every creature as stationing material automatically. Spacecraft compete with attacking because stationing is a sorcery-speed ability that taps another untapped creature and puts charge counters equal to that creature’s power on the Spacecraft. Use Type-03 Borg Vessel, Borg Scout Sphere, Transwarp Hub, Class-4 Tactical Cube and Queen’s Diamond when their stationed ability is worth giving up that attack.

How does the deck snowball in the mid game?

Locutus of Borg gives your artifact creatures “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, create a 1/1 colorless Borg artifact creature token.” Every token is itself an artifact creature with the same trigger, so an unblocked attack can compound over several turns.

  • Supplementation Node puts a +1/+1 counter on each artifact creature that connects.
  • Co-Option Adjutant draws a card for each artifact creature that deals combat damage to a player.
  • Hive Mind Coprocessor lets you pay one life to draw a card for each connecting creature.
  • Tempered Steel, Forsaken Monument and Locutus, the One Who Speaks increase the damage and toughness of the growing artifact army.
  • Unwinding Clock untaps artifacts during each other player’s untap step, letting the team attack on your turn and still block, while also refreshing Ambulatory Reactor mana.

Class-4 Tactical Cube, Type-03 Borg Vessel, Borg Incursion, Conquest Mission and Stratagem Emulator add further token production. Kraken the Meta counted 10 Borg-making cards in the list. A token that would be a 1/1 normally can become a 5/5 with The Borg Queen and Tempered Steel; with One, Borg Evolved, it can also have flying, double strike, vigilance, menace, lifelink and ward {2}.

What should you mulligan with We Are the Borg?

There is no official mulligan chart or published keep-percentage study. The following keeps are inferred from the published curve, 38-land configuration and 13 ramp pieces.

Hands to keep

  • Two or three lands, with at least one untapped colored source for the first two turns.
  • At least one accelerator: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, a Talisman, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Everflowing Chalice, Ambulatory Reactor or Type-03 Borg Vessel.
  • An inexpensive artifact creature or payoff such as Command Subadjunct, Extraction Integrant, Locutus, the One Who Speaks, Locutus of Borg or Tempered Steel.
  • A mid-game use for your mana, such as Locutus of Borg, a combat-damage payoff or a sweeper when your table is fast.

On the draw, a two-land hand with a rock can be slightly slower because the extra card improves your chance of finding a third land. On the play, favor an untapped land and a turn-two play.

Hands to throw back

  • Zero or one land.
  • Five or more lands with no ramp and no one-to-three-mana spell.
  • An opening seven made only of six- and seven-mana cards such as The Borg Queen, One, Borg Evolved, Join the Collective and The Best of Both Worlds.
  • No colored source capable of casting Command Subadjunct or a two-mana Talisman on time.
  • Only interaction and no creature or mana rock. The deck’s card advantage depends on combat damage, so a hand that cannot establish an artifact creature usually stalls.

After a London mulligan, a six-card hand still needs land plus ramp or land plus a cheap creature. Do not keep a hand that functions only if you top-deck The Borg Queen by turn four.

What are the We Are the Borg win conditions?

1. Go-wide combat with shared keywords

The primary finish is a large board of Borg tokens and assimilated creatures. The Queen, Tempered Steel, Forsaken Monument, Door of Destinies and Locutus, the One Who Speaks make the army larger, while One, Borg Evolved supplies the evasive keyword package. Flying and menace reduce the number of profitable blocks; double strike and lifelink turn a wide attack into both lethal damage and a large life swing.

2. Combat-damage snowball

Locutus of Borg turns every connecting artifact creature into another token-maker. Co-Option Adjutant and Hive Mind Coprocessor refill your hand from that same attack. This is a cumulative engine rather than an infinite combo: if the table can block every attacker or prevent combat damage, the engine stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Battle of Wolf 359 into an attack

Battle of Wolf 359 costs {3}{B}{B} and gives all nonartifact creatures -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of artifact creatures you control. Since the stock deck has no nonartifact creatures, the spell is structurally one-sided. Cast it after building a substantial artifact count, then attack the emptied battlefield.

4. Join the Collective rebuild

Join the Collective costs {5}{W}{W}, destroys all creatures, then creates X 1/1 Borg tokens where X is the number of nonartifact creatures destroyed this way. It also destroys your own board, so use it when opponents have more nonartifact creatures than you have artifacts worth preserving, when your battlefield is already empty, or when you can protect key permanents and rebuild from the token count.

5. Stolen creatures under your anthems

The Queen, Gift of Perfection, Assimilation Assessor and Assimilate the Wounded turn opposing creatures into your artifact creatures. They receive the Queen’s +2/+2 and can produce Locutus triggers. This line is incremental and weak against creature-light decks, but it can convert an opponent’s best threat into your next attacker.

6. Commander damage as a secondary route

The Queen is a 6/6 with her own anthem, and attacking retriggers assimilation. Four unblocked attacks from an otherwise unmodified Queen deal 24 commander damage. Rogue’s Passage and Swiftfoot Boots help force those attacks through, but evasion and protection become more valuable than additional anthems once Locutus is producing tokens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which cards protect the plan, and what can go wrong?

The stock interaction suite includes Anguished Unmaking, Return to Dust, Dispatch, Bitter Triumph, Toxic Deluge and Disallow, which can answer permanents, creatures, spells, activated abilities or triggered abilities. Emergency Regeneration gives your artifacts hexproof and indestructible until end of turn, while Swiftfoot Boots and Darksteel Plate protect a key creature or commander. Battle of Wolf 359 and Join the Collective are the deck’s major reset buttons.

  • Combat dependence: Fog effects, pillow-fort permanents and wide boards of blockers can stop both token creation and card draw. Finding evasion often matters more than adding another anthem.
  • Commander tax: Seven mana is already expensive; repeated removal makes each subsequent Queen substantially harder to cast.
  • Mass exile: Emergency Regeneration does not stop a spell such as Farewell that exiles permanents. Preserve counter-magic or diversify your board when exile sweepers are likely.
  • Skullclamp timing: The Queen’s +2/+2 means a 1/1 Borg equipped with Skullclamp becomes a 3/3 and will not die to the equipment’s -1 toughness. Equip before the Queen arrives, use Skullclamp on an unbuffed 1-toughness creature, or accept that the draw engine is offline while the anthem is active.
  • Door of Destinies: It receives counters only when you cast a spell of the chosen type. Assimilated creatures, Borg tokens and Spacecraft entering as artifacts do not charge it, and the stock list casts only 19 Borg creature spells.
  • Conquest Mission: Its landfall-style artifact count is less explosive because the stock list contains zero artifact lands.

Is The Borg Queen good despite costing seven mana?

Seven mana is the deck’s main structural weakness, not a reason to cast her immediately. Metagame’s guidance is to play the long game: develop mana and a board first, then let the Queen turn every artifact creature into a larger threat while adding a stolen creature.

The Queen is strongest when you already control several creatures, a protection spell or a way to give her an immediate attack. She is less impressive against creature-light libraries, repeated exile removal or tables where combat damage rarely connects. No published win rate or Wizards power-level number establishes a guaranteed performance; results will depend on opposing decks, mulligans, table rules and how often the commander survives.

Which commander should you put in the command zone?

Commander Role Choose it when
The Borg Queen Seven-mana theft commander and global artifact-creature anthem You want the full library-assimilation plan and can support a long game
Locutus of Borg Four-mana token-combat commander Your table dislikes expensive commanders or you want the simplest combat line
Hugh, First of Many Four-mana 3/4 that gives artifact spells replicate {2}{U} You want copies of artifact spells that become tokens
One, Borg Evolved Seven-mana keyword lord You want the six-keyword finisher as the central commander rather than a theft engine
Jurati, Cordial Queen Copies an artifact token when artifact creatures deal combat damage You prefer token copying; stock copies are 1/1 Borgs

Korok, Liberated Rage is shared with Klingon Fury, while Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct is shared with Federation Fleet. Deckcheck’s suggestions for copying nonlegendary Queens and using Urza, Chief Artificer Constructs belong to upgraded builds, not the stock list.

What are the best first upgrades?

Upgrade with five goals: increase Assimilate density, add artifact payoffs, replace slow lands with faster three-color fixing, protect the Queen and decide whether flavor or efficiency matters more.

Kraken the Meta’s six-card cheap package was priced at $1.66 on 28–29 October 2026: Cranial Plating, Etherium Sculptor, Master of Etherium, Steel Overseer, Thopter Spy Network and Chief of the Foundry. The suggested cuts included Darksteel Plate, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Command Subadjunct, Astral Cornucopia, Emergency Regeneration and Shore Leave Planet. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a promise of current prices.

Keeping every creature an artifact creature preserves Battle of Wolf 359’s one-sided property. Adding a nonartifact creature, such as Urza, Lord High Artificer, means that creature can be hit by the spell and changes the calculation. Premium upgrade discussions also mention faster artifact cost reducers, artifact lands for Conquest Mission, nonlegendary Queen copies and mass-exile protection such as Clever Concealment.

Should you buy We Are the Borg or another Star Trek Commander deck?

Deck Core identity Published reprint value snapshot Main trade-off
We Are the Borg Artifact-creature go-wide combat and assimilation $104.11, Kraken the Meta, 28 October 2026 Seven-mana commander and dependence on artifact creatures connecting
Federation Fleet Legendary-character and group-value strategy $79.87, Kraken the Meta, 29 October 2026 More casual-table group-hug play, less concentrated artifact scaling
Klingon Fury Attack-everyone Klingon combat deck $98.04, Kraken the Meta, 29 October 2026 Requires aggressive attacks rather than artifact-wide payoffs
Landing Party Commander Spock-led green-white-blue deck Full list was not yet posted on Wizards’ decklists page Insufficient published list information for a direct value comparison

Kraken the Meta called We Are the Borg the stronger deck and better value among the three complete lists it reviewed. Its $104.11 reprint snapshot used cheapest non-foil Scryfall prices on 28 October 2026; new cards were unpriced. Eight reprints—Morphic Pool, Unwinding Clock, The Immortal Sun, Toxic Deluge, Skullclamp, Eclipsed Steppe, Academy Ruins and Forsaken Monument—accounted for $82.52 of that total. The value estimate is not a post-release market price.

When does We Are the Borg release, and is it legal?

Prerelease events are scheduled for 6–12 November 2026, MTG Arena release is 10 November 2026, and global tabletop release is 13 November 2026. Wizards lists the regular Commander Deck at $74.99 and Collector’s Edition at $159.99. The Collector’s Edition contains the same strategy and list in surge foil, so the regular version is the practical choice for playing or upgrading; the premium version is primarily a foil-collecting purchase.

Star Trek Commander (TRC) cards are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage, and in any other format where an individual card was already legal. The complete We Are the Borg list was published by Wizards on 28 October 2026; Landing Party was still absent from that decklist page at the time of writing.

How we picked the strategy recommendations

The recommendations follow the published mana curve, the all-artifact-creature construction, the listed Assimilate cards, the deck’s combat-damage triggers, and the interaction and token engines identified in the complete card list. They do not rely on a claimed win rate, preview-event record or hands-on test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Borg tokens are included in the regular deck?

The box includes 10 non-foil double-sided tokens: five Borg (0019) // Copy tokens and five Borg (0020) // Copy tokens. The two token printings serve the deck’s different token effects and are listed separately on Wizards’ decklist page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When can I play We Are the Borg on MTG Arena?

The scheduled MTG Arena release is 10 November 2026. Physical prerelease events are planned for 6–12 November, followed by the global tabletop release on 13 November.

Does an assimilated creature keep its abilities?

Yes. Assimilate changes control, adds a +1/+1 counter and changes the creature into a Borg artifact creature, but it does not automatically erase the rules text printed on that creature. Its former creature types are removed, which can disable tribal bonuses from its previous identity.

What happens to the noncreature cards exiled by the Queen?

After the first creature card is found and assimilated, the other cards exiled from that library are put on the bottom in a random order. They are not put into the graveyard, and the Queen does not let you choose their order.
