The Windows message “We can’t sign you in with this credential because your domain isn’t available” means the PC could not authenticate with an Active Directory domain controller, establish its computer trust session, or find a usable cached sign-in for that user. It does not, by itself, prove that the password is wrong.
First connect the computer to the organization’s wired or wireless network, or to an approved VPN that works before the Windows sign-in screen appears. Then retry the same domain account and sign-in method used previously. If that fails while the device is online, an administrator should check DNS, domain-controller reachability, Netlogon, cached-logon policy, and the computer’s secure channel.

Windows normally validates a domain account by contacting an Active Directory domain controller. The exchange includes locating a controller through DNS, communicating over the required network services, and using the Netlogon service to establish a secure session. If any of those stages fails, Windows may display this message.
The same message can also appear when the PC is away from the corporate network and has no cached logon for the account, when the cached entry was removed, or when the computer’s secure channel with the domain is broken. Microsoft’s Netlogon troubleshooting guidance associates this wording with a failure to set up a secure session with a domain controller.

A mistyped password is still possible, but it is not the first conclusion to draw. Check the approved network path and domain availability before repeatedly changing credentials.
What should I do at the Windows sign-in screen?
- Connect through the organization’s normal path. Plug into the corporate LAN or join its managed Wi-Fi. If you are remote, start the organization’s approved pre-logon VPN or secure-access connection. A VPN that can be launched only after Windows signs in cannot help when this user has no cached credentials.
- Retry the account using the same method as before. Use the same domain username format, smart card, security key, or other sign-in method that previously worked on this PC. If this is the first attempted sign-in for that user on that device, offline authentication cannot work because Windows has not yet created a cached entry.
- Use another working account only as a recovery route. A local administrator or another previously cached domain user can sometimes open Windows so an administrator can restore networking, start the approved VPN, inspect DNS, and collect logs. Signing in with a local account does not repair domain authentication by itself.
- Escalate while the device is connected. If the error remains after the computer has a confirmed corporate connection, ask the domain administrator to check controller health, Netlogon, DNS discovery, and the computer’s secure channel. Tell support whether other users or PCs are affected; that distinction quickly separates a local cache problem from an infrastructure outage.
Do not keep guessing passwords. Repeated failures can trigger account lockout policies and obscure the original connectivity problem.
Why does offline sign-in work for some users but not others?
A first-time user has no cached entry
Windows can use cached domain information only after that user has successfully authenticated against a domain controller on the device. A new employee, a newly rebuilt PC, or a user who has never selected that sign-in profile cannot create the cache while completely offline. The first successful sign-in must occur with line of sight to a controller, either on the organization’s network or through a pre-logon VPN.
The cache has a finite quota
Windows stores only a configured number of previous domain sign-ins. The policy is located at Computer ConfigurationWindows SettingsSecurity SettingsLocal PoliciesSecurity OptionsInteractive logon: Number of previous logons to cache (in case domain controller is not available). Microsoft documents values from 0 through 50 and an effective client default of 10 in its 2026 policy reference. A value of 0 disables cached domain logons completely.
An older entry may have been evicted
When the quota is full and another domain user signs in, Windows removes the oldest cached entry first. Microsoft documents Event 45058 for this first-in, first-out deletion. The affected user must sign in while connected to a domain controller to place a fresh entry back in the cache; simply retrying at home cannot recreate it.

Cached data can lag behind the directory
Offline authentication uses the information stored on the PC at the time of the last successful online sign-in. It does not immediately learn that an account was disabled, a password was changed, group membership was altered, or a profile was modified in the directory. The next online authentication is required to reconcile those changes, so a cached sign-in is a continuity feature, not a substitute for current domain validation.

Establish the scope before changing settings
Ask whether one user on one PC is affected or whether many users and devices failed at the same time. One user after many different people have used the PC often indicates cache eviction. A first-time user who is off-network points to a missing initial cache. Widespread failures are more consistent with a domain controller, DNS, Netlogon, routing, or VPN problem.
Record the time of the failure, the exact username format, the connection type, and whether the sign-in screen showed a pre-logon VPN as connected. These details help correlate client events with controller and network logs.
Verify internal DNS and domain discovery
Domain members should use the organization’s internal DNS resolvers for Active Directory records. Confirm that the PC receives the expected DNS servers from its corporate network or approved VPN, resolves the domain’s internal service records, and can reach at least one domain controller. A public resolver may resolve ordinary internet sites while failing to provide the records Windows needs for domain discovery.
DNS timeouts, stale resolver settings, split-tunnel mistakes, or a VPN that routes web traffic but not domain traffic can all produce the same sign-in wording. Correct the network path first, then retry authentication before repairing the computer account.

Check Netlogon and controller reachability
When several users or machines are affected, examine whether the Netlogon service starts normally and whether RPC and other required traffic can reach a healthy domain controller. Controller outages, blocked firewall ports, broken routing, or a failed site connection can prevent the secure session from being created even when the PC appears to be online.
Test the computer’s secure channel
On a domain member, open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
Test-ComputerSecureChannel
A True result indicates that the local computer can validate its secure channel at the time of the test; a False result warrants repair and further network checks. Microsoft’s PowerShell reference describes this channel as the relationship between the local computer and its domain.
After confirming that the PC can reach the correct domain controller, an administrator can attempt:
Test-ComputerSecureChannel -Repair
The repair may require domain credentials and appropriate administrative rights. It should be performed only after DNS and controller connectivity are working; otherwise a failed repair can be mistaken for a new problem.

Microsoft’s secure-channel troubleshooting guidance also documents:
nltest /sc_reset:domain_name
Replace domain_name with the organization’s actual domain name, run the command with the required privileges, and reboot after a successful repair. If the command cannot locate a controller, return to DNS, routing, VPN, and Netlogon diagnostics rather than repeatedly resetting the channel.
How do the most likely causes differ?
| Observed situation | Most likely explanation | What to verify | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| User has never signed in on this PC and is off-network | No cached entry exists for that account | Whether the user has ever completed an online sign-in | Connect through the corporate network or approved pre-logon VPN, then sign in once |
| Only one user fails after many different users used the PC | The user’s cached entry may have been evicted at the quota limit | Cached-logon policy and Event 45058 | Authenticate that user online to recreate the cache |
| Several users fail on one PC | Local DNS, Netlogon, or computer secure-channel problem | Internal DNS, Netlogon status, and Test-ComputerSecureChannel |
Restore connectivity, repair the channel if necessary, and reboot |
| Many PCs or users fail together | Domain-controller, DNS, routing, firewall, or VPN infrastructure issue | Controller health, service logs, network paths, and affected sites | Escalate to the directory and network teams; avoid changing each PC independently |
| PC is online but account changes are not reflected | Windows is using stale cached information or online validation is failing | Whether the device can reach a controller and whether the account is enabled | Complete a successful online sign-in and have an administrator check the account state |
How should cached-logon policy be configured?
The policy controls how many previous domain users can sign in with cached account information when no controller is available. Microsoft documents a range of 0–50, with an effective client default of 10. The setting is a count of users, not a number of days, and increasing it does not repair DNS, Netlogon, or a broken secure channel.
Recommended Free Tools
- 0: Cached domain sign-in is disabled. Users must reach a domain controller for every domain sign-in.
- 1–50: Up to the configured number of previous domain users can authenticate offline, subject to replacement and eviction as new users sign in.
- 10: The effective client default documented by Microsoft; the organization’s policy may override it.
Changing the value is a security and availability decision. A larger quota can help mobile or remote staff continue working during a controller outage, but it leaves more cached verifiers on a device and increases the chance that an infrequent user’s entry remains while a newer user displaces another. A value of 0 reduces offline exposure but also guarantees that a controller outage prevents domain sign-in.
Apply the policy through the organization’s approved Group Policy process, document the reason, and test it on representative laptops and shared PCs. Do not change it as a quick fix for a single user until the cache, network, and secure-channel evidence supports that diagnosis.

Will changing the password fix the error?
Usually not. A password reset performed in the directory still requires the PC to contact a domain controller before Windows can confirm the new credential. If the computer is offline, changing the password elsewhere can leave its cached information out of date; the user should connect through the approved network and complete an online sign-in with the current password.
If the account is locked, disabled, expired, or restricted by policy, an administrator must correct that directory state. A password change cannot repair a missing DNS record, an unavailable controller, or a broken computer secure channel.
What should an organization do to prevent repeat failures?
- Provide a pre-logon VPN or equivalent managed access method for users who must sign in away from the office.
- Ensure domain-joined devices receive internal DNS settings whenever the corporate network or VPN is connected.
- Have users complete one successful online sign-in after a PC rebuild, domain join, or account assignment so a cache exists before travel.
- Monitor domain controllers, Netlogon, DNS, and VPN gateways for outages that affect multiple devices.
- Review the cached-logon count for the device’s role, especially shared workstations where many accounts rotate through the cache.
- Train support staff to distinguish a local account from a domain account and to avoid presenting a consumer VPN or random DNS change as a universal remedy.
For a single incident, the safest order is network path, same sign-in method, scope check, DNS and controller validation, cache review, and only then secure-channel repair. That sequence preserves evidence and avoids unnecessary changes to the computer account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a local account while the domain is unavailable?
If a local account was created and its password is known, enter it with the local-account format supported by the organization, commonly . or the computer name followed by the username. This can provide a temporary desktop for troubleshooting, but it has none of the domain account’s policies, mapped resources, or permissions.
Will a public DNS service make domain sign-in more reliable?
No. Active Directory discovery depends on internal DNS records that public resolvers do not host. Use the DNS servers delivered by the organization’s LAN or approved VPN, and ask the network team to correct those settings if they are missing.
What should I give the help desk when reporting this message?
Include the device name, username, exact time, whether the user is on-site or on a pre-logon VPN, and whether another account can sign in. Also report whether coworkers or other PCs show the same error; that information determines whether support starts with the local cache or with shared infrastructure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can an account password change make the old offline sign-in stop working?
Cached credentials are updated only after the device completes an online domain authentication. After a password change, connect the PC to the organization’s network before relying on offline sign-in; otherwise the cached state may not match the directory’s current password or account status.
