What Are Your Odds of Finding a Job in Games? Amir Satvat’s Project Flagpole Estimates

Amir Satvat’s Project Flagpole estimated games-job odds at about 10% within 12 months and 16% by month 22. The community figures are not personal forecasts, and its any-job estimates measure a different outcome.

Amir Satvat’s Project Flagpole estimates that a job seeker in its games-focused community had about a 10% chance of finding a games-industry job within 12 months, rising to 16% by month 22. Those are community-based estimates—not a universal statistic or a personal forecast. The reported odds of finding any job were substantially higher: 54% by month 12 and 71% by month 22.

What do the Project Flagpole odds measure?

Satvat’s 2024 update put the 12-month chance of finding a games job at about 10%, revising an earlier estimate of 7–8%. He wrote: “The odds of finding a games job in games over 12 months are better than previously thought – closer to 10%, not 7-8%.” The estimate reached 16% by month 22. These are reported outcomes from a community-based model, not population-representative odds.

GamesBeat reported that Project Flagpole’s analysis drew on more than 1.6 million data points gathered since November 2022 from community resources, talent professionals, community members, and applicants. That scale describes the data points, not necessarily the number of individual job seekers. The underlying dataset, full methodology, confidence intervals, and independent validation are not available in the cited material, so the estimate should not be treated as a calibrated probability for an individual applicant. Games job versus any job—and 12 months versus 22

“Finding a job in games” and “finding any job” are different outcomes. In Satvat’s 2024 figures, the broader any-job outcome was 54% by month 12 and 71% by month 22. As he put it: “By month 12, the odds of finding ANY job are 54%.” That does not mean a 54% chance of a games-industry role.

Who was counted, and what counted as finding work?

Satvat said the updated analysis included community members looking for games roles, not only people who had been laid off. The analysis counted people who reported that their search was over. For its successful-placement outcome, it excluded underemployment and contract work; his follow-up clarified that people in underemployment, fractional work, contract work, or other non-full-time roles could remain in the still-searching tally.

That distinction matters: a person who has found paid work may still be looking for a full-time role, while the analysis did not count every form of work as a successful placement. Self-selection into a job-seeking community, respondents’ definitions of an ended search, and changes in hiring conditions can all affect the estimate. The available sources do not quantify those effects. Satvat’s 2024 update; Satvat’s follow-up

How experience and search scope change the comparison

Previously worked in games

Satvat estimated that people who had previously worked in games had about a one-in-four chance of finding another games role within 12 months. This is his estimate for that group, not a guarantee or a directly comparable personal forecast. Satvat’s 2024 post

Looking beyond games

Satvat also reported that overall job-search success was more than five times higher at month 12 and later among people who widened their search beyond games. This is an observed comparison in his community data; it does not establish that broadening a search caused the difference. It does, however, distinguish the challenge of finding work specifically in games from finding work elsewhere.

What do newer market figures add?

Separate estimates Satvat published in 2026 describe the scale of competition, not the probability that any one person will be hired. He estimated roughly 288,000 seekers and about 4,500 net new roles across 2022–2026, or roughly five seekers per hire. These are his market estimates, not a recalculation of Project Flagpole’s 12- or 22-month odds. Satvat’s 2026 estimates

Another 2026 post said that 6% of 40,000 total roles had seen any workbook engagement, while around 1,500 of 14,500 games roles had engagement. These counts describe interactions with listings in the community, not the share of roles that were viable, the share filled, or an applicant’s chance of getting hired. Satvat’s 2026 post

A separate 2025 InGame Job survey reported that 15% of respondents had been job hunting for over a year or were still searching, and 26% had experienced layoffs in the preceding year. Those are survey findings from a different source and should not be combined with Project Flagpole’s estimates. InGame Job’s 2025 survey

How should location and remote work affect expectations?

In a separate 2024 post, Satvat said remote roles represented 14% of opportunities in the dataset he described. This is a dated, dataset-specific figure—not a current universal share of games jobs. Location and willingness to relocate or work on-site can affect which openings are accessible, but this statistic alone cannot quantify the impact for an individual. How to use the estimates in your own search

  • Set the right outcome. Decide whether you are measuring a games-industry role, any paid work, or a full-time role; those are not interchangeable.
  • Treat the percentages as context, not a forecast. Your experience, specialty, location, network, and the openings available during your search are not captured as an individualized calculation.
  • Consider how broad your search can be. If you are open to adjacent industries or roles outside games, keep that option distinct from the goal of landing a games job.
  • Define what counts as success for you. Contract, fractional, and underemployed work may matter to your circumstances even though Satvat’s placement measure did not count those arrangements as successful placements.

Satvat cautioned: “There is no panacea for finding a games job in this environment, including our community.” Satvat’s follow-up
