In vanilla Minecraft, bedrock and several special blocks are listed as immune to the Wither. Obsidian is not: the Wither can break it, so a cage made from obsidian is not a dependable barrier. Which blocks work can depend on edition and version.
Blocks the Wither cannot break
The Minecraft Wiki’s Wither reference lists these blocks as immune to the Wither:
- Bedrock
- Barrier
- End portal, end portal frame, and end gateway blocks
- Command block, structure block, and jigsaw block
- Light block
- Moving piston and moving block
- Reinforced deepslate
For ordinary survival play, bedrock is the practical answer on this list. Barriers, command blocks, structure blocks, jigsaw blocks, and light blocks are special blocks whose availability depends on game mode and permissions; portal blocks and moving piston blocks are not ordinary building materials.
Can the Wither break obsidian?
Yes. Obsidian is not Wither-immune, despite its high blast resistance. Blast resistance and immunity to the Wither’s block-breaking behavior are different properties, so an obsidian cube should not be treated as a guaranteed trap.

The Minecraft Wiki’s Wither-cage tutorial describes several ways blocks can be broken: black skulls break weaker blocks such as wood and dirt; blue skulls can break stronger blocks such as stone and iron blocks; and damage to the Wither can trigger it to break blocks in its hitbox, including obsidian. These descriptions are not a guarantee that every attack behaves identically in every edition or version.
Why a Bedrock note about obsidian can be misleading
Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes say that the Wither “no longer breaks obsidian during its spawning animation.” That change is specifically about the spawning animation; it does not establish that obsidian is safe from the Wither’s other block-breaking behavior.

What to use for containment
If you need a barrier, bedrock is the clearly identified option for vanilla survival. The other immune blocks listed above are special, situational, or not normally available as building materials. Avoid relying on obsidian alone, and do not assume a trap design is safe without checking the edition and version you play.
