Gearbox showed four pieces of Borderlands 4 concept art at its PAX West 2024 Main Theatre Show. They suggest a world where advanced technology sits alongside worn, improvised surroundings—but the panel did not confirm the pictured environments as final in-game locations.
What does the Borderlands 4 concept art show?
GameSpot’s September 3, 2024 report described four images featuring possible environments: sci-fi cityscapes, a hazy interior and a structure beside a cliff. Gearbox offered little detail about the specific scenes. When the second image appeared, art director Adam May said, “We can’t say much.” GameSpot’s account of the reveal presents them as an early look at possible locations, not a confirmed map.
The images are best read for their visual contrasts rather than as clues to a plot, faction or particular destination. City, interior and cliffside are descriptions of what the art depicts; they do not establish that those places appear in the finished game.
What visual direction did Gearbox describe?
May summed up the intended aesthetic as “high tech but lo-fi.” He said the team wanted to explore “some more color and more tech in this world than we have in any other.” He also said, “We don’t want to just keep rehashing the same world over and over again.” Together, those comments point to a fresh visual direction built around technology and color, without spelling out the identities or histories behind any individual image. GameSpot reported the panel comments.

How does the art relate to Borderlands 4’s world, Kairos?
Later official material identifies Kairos as Borderlands 4’s planet setting. Gearbox creative director Graeme Timmins described it as “a high-tech world that has fallen apart and then gets kind of ramshackled back together.” He said environmental storytelling, location and faction histories, dynamic weather and a more grounded tone helped shape the setting. That description resonates with the PAX art’s contrast between technology and wear, but it does not identify any of the four images as a final Kairos location. The Entertainment Software Association’s interview with Timmins provides the later setting context.
2K describes the Timekeeper as a dictator whose control is threatened by a world-altering catastrophe. That is confirmed story context, but the PAX images themselves do not establish a connection between any depicted scene and the Timekeeper or the catastrophe. 2K’s official game page identifies Kairos and outlines the premise.

Is the concept art a look at the final game?
It is a preview of a possible visual world, not proof that the specific pictured environments made it into the released game. The panel did not confirm them as final locations, and May’s “We can’t say much” was a limit on what the art reveal established. Later descriptions of Kairos help explain the intended mix of advanced technology and decay, but they do not retroactively turn the concept images into a confirmed tour of the game’s map.
In a September 9, 2025 developer interview, Gearbox technical director Neil Johnson said Unreal Engine 5’s World Partition feature helped the team present a larger world than it could build using its previous approach. He also described greater freedom to move and explore, with dynamic time of day and weather contributing to immersion. Those are later technical details about the game, not features that can be inferred from the 2024 concept art. Johnson’s interview with Unreal Engine discusses the development approach.

Where can you see more Borderlands 4 development art?
The Art of Borderlands 4 is an official 224-page hardcover described by publisher Dark Horse Direct as a full-color collection of development art and commentary, including concepts, character designs, enemies and environments. Dark Horse Direct says the book is now shipping. Its listing describes the book’s contents but does not establish that it reproduces the exact four images shown at PAX West. See the Dark Horse Direct listing.
Borderlands 4 released on September 12, 2025 and is available worldwide for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, according to 2K. 2K’s game page has the current platform details.
