A PC game that will not start is usually failing at the boundary between the game build and your particular Windows, driver, hardware, renderer, cache, or background software. Common blockers include damaged files, unfinished updates, unsupported hardware, missing DirectX or Visual C++ components, incompatible DirectX/Vulkan paths, shader compilation and cache errors, and overlays that hook into the process. A patch can repair code and data, change initialization order, add compatibility fallbacks, or improve shader delivery, but it cannot resolve every machine-specific conflict.
The fastest reliable approach is to identify where startup stops, then test the least destructive fix first: restart, check requirements, update Windows and drivers, verify files, remove software hooks, repair runtimes, rebuild caches only when instructed, and test another supported renderer. If the same failure remains after those checks, collect a precise log and report it to the developer rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Start by locating the launch stage
“The game is broken” describes an outcome, not a cause. Note the last visible stage, because it narrows the affected layer.

Record whether the problem reproduces after a clean reboot, with overlays disabled, and on another supported renderer. Those observations distinguish a title-wide defect from a conflict unique to one installation.

Damaged or incomplete game files
Extraction, patching, disk errors, interrupted downloads, and security software can leave a file missing or changed. Steam Support says corruption in extracted game files is a common reason a game will not launch. A verification pass compares the installed data with the storefront manifest and reacquires files that do not match; it normally avoids downloading the entire game again.
Verify before reinstalling
- Close the game and its launcher completely. In Windows Task Manager, end a process only when it is clearly the game or launcher and is no longer responding.
- Open the storefront client, select the game in your library, and open its Installed Files or equivalent management page.
- Choose the command labelled Verify integrity of game files, Verify files, or the current equivalent, then wait for the scan and download to finish.
- Launch once without changing graphics options. A first run may still take time while shaders are prepared.
Verification does not repair a bad Windows driver, a broken runtime, a conflicting overlay, or a corrupted save stored outside the installation directory. If verification reports a replacement every time, check available disk space, the drive’s health, and security software that may be quarantining the same file.
Windows, GPU drivers, and runtime components
Games depend on several layers that are updated independently. An old Windows build can lack a platform fix; a GPU driver can contain a compiler or API bug; and a missing redistributable can stop the executable before any graphics appear. Steam recommends current Windows and component drivers. Capcom support specifically directs players to update video drivers and install the latest DirectX components. Larian has documented cases where manually updating Visual C++ components resolved startup crashes.

- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and confirm that the update process has completed rather than merely been scheduled.
- Install the current graphics driver for the exact GPU model from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. Use a clean-install option only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it; unnecessary driver removal adds another failure point.
- Update chipset and audio drivers when the title uses unusual input, anti-cheat, or audio initialization and the developer lists those components as requirements.
- Install or repair the DirectX runtime and the Visual C++ Redistributables requested by the publisher. A newer package does not always replace every legacy side-by-side component a game expects.
- Restart again, then test the unmodified game before adding launch options or mods.
Do not infer that a driver update is automatically beneficial. If a launch failure begins immediately after one, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback procedure and document both driver versions for the developer.

Renderer and API incompatibility
The same title can behave differently through DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan. Each path exercises different driver code, feature levels, memory handling, and shader compilers. Larian recommends switching between DirectX 11 and Vulkan when a title offers both. Roberts Space Industries documents returning from Vulkan to DirectX when Vulkan causes launch crashes.
Test another renderer safely
- Read the developer’s support page or current launch instructions to identify the supported APIs and the exact switch, menu entry, or launcher option.
- Change only the renderer; remove unrelated experimental flags so the result is attributable to one variable.
- Allow the game to rebuild its graphics settings if prompted. A renderer change can invalidate cached pipelines and trigger a one-time compile.
- If the alternate API works, keep it as a workaround and report the failing API, GPU model, driver version, Windows build, and error text.
Never assume that a launch option copied from another game is valid here. An unknown flag may prevent the launcher from reaching the settings menu, in which case remove it through the storefront’s launch-options field or by resetting the game’s documented configuration file.
Shaders, first-run waits, and damaged caches
A shader is compiled for a particular game, GPU, and driver. Microsoft DirectX documentation notes that this device-specific relationship traditionally made advance compilation impractical. The work can therefore happen on the first launch, after a driver update, or after a game patch. A long compilation stage is not automatically a hang; interrupting it can leave the cache incomplete.

When to wait and when to rebuild
- Wait through a documented first-run compilation, especially when disk or CPU activity continues and the progress indicator advances.
- Do not repeatedly force-close the process during compilation; each interruption can extend the next attempt.
- If the process fails at the same shader stage on every run, follow the publisher’s cache-clearing instructions or the GPU driver’s documented cache reset. Cache locations and safe deletion procedures differ by game and driver.
- After clearing a cache, expect another full compilation and possible temporary stutter while it is recreated.
Deleting arbitrary folders is risky: some games store settings, profiles, or downloaded assets beside cache data. Back up files identified as saves or profiles before removing anything.
Overlays, capture tools, and virtual-audio software
Overlays and hooks inject code into a game process. Storefront overlays, chat overlays, frame-rate monitors, capture utilities, RGB tools, performance tuners, and virtual-audio mixers can conflict with a launcher or renderer. Steam advises disabling non-essential software that interferes with Steam. Larian identifies ASUS Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer as a known startup-crash trigger and suggests bypassing the Steam or GOG launcher as a diagnostic step.
Perform a clean software test
- Exit overlay, recording, monitoring, RGB, and virtual-audio applications from their notification-area menus, not just their visible windows.
- Disable the storefront overlay and any per-game compatibility layer in the client settings.
- Disconnect nonessential controllers or USB audio devices temporarily if the crash occurs during input or audio initialization.
- Launch the game directly through the developer-documented executable only when support instructions allow it; bypassing a launcher can reveal whether the hand-off is failing.
- Re-enable tools one at a time after a successful launch. The first tool that reproduces the crash is a strong lead, not proof that the tool is defective in every configuration.
Hardware requirements are a floor, not a guarantee
Minimum specifications describe a supported starting point, not a promise that every driver, API path, resolution, and background workload will launch reliably. Steam cautions that systems at or near minimum requirements can experience launch or performance problems. Integrated graphics may require lower shader detail or windowed mode, and some features listed as optional may still affect a particular renderer.

Check the complete configuration
- Compare the current GPU model, video memory, system memory, CPU, operating-system version, and free storage with the game’s current minimum and recommended specifications.
- Confirm that the GPU supports the feature level and API selected by the game; a name that appears similar to a supported model may still lack a required feature.
- Leave additional memory and storage for shader caches, decompression, and Windows paging. A drive that is technically large enough for installation can still be too full for patching.
- On a laptop, force the game to use the discrete GPU through the operating system’s graphics settings when the integrated adapter is selected unintentionally.
If the machine is below a required feature or memory level, a patch cannot manufacture that capability. A lower renderer or windowed mode may help only when the developer lists it as supported.

What a patch can actually repair
A patch changes the game’s code, data, or initialization behavior. It cannot update every user’s Windows installation or remove an unrelated overlay, so a new build can fix one layer while leaving another untouched.

A patch changes a known set of assumptions. It may expose a driver bug that the previous build never reached, invalidate a cache, alter memory use, or introduce a regression in one renderer while fixing another. A patch can also coincide with a Windows or GPU-driver update, making the timing look causal when two changes arrived together.
Separate regression from local fallout
- Write down the previous build number, the new build number, and the exact time the failure began.
- Test once with overlays, mods, custom launch options, and reshade-style injectors disabled.
- Verify files so an interrupted patch is not mistaken for a code regression.
- Try the other officially supported renderer and a fresh configuration only if the developer documents those tests.
- Check the developer’s known-issues page and support channels for a matching regression. If many users reproduce it on different hardware, provide logs rather than repeatedly changing drivers.
Do not downgrade from unofficial mirrors. A rollback is safe only when the developer or storefront provides an authenticated, supported route.

A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this order because each step is reversible and produces useful evidence for the next one.
- Restart the PC and launcher. This clears a locked executable, completes pending updates, and resets a failed launcher hand-off.
- Capture the symptom. Note the last screen, exact error text, whether a process remains in Task Manager, and whether the failure occurs before or after shader compilation.
- Check requirements and free space. Compare the current machine with the title’s current specifications, including API and feature requirements.
- Update Windows and official drivers. Install GPU, chipset, and audio updates relevant to the failure, then restart.
- Verify installation files. Use the storefront’s integrity check and let every replacement finish.
- Remove software hooks. Disable overlays, capture tools, virtual-audio mixers, monitoring utilities, mods, and custom injectors.
- Repair runtimes. Install or repair the DirectX and Visual C++ components named by the publisher.
- Handle shader data carefully. Wait through a documented first compilation; clear a cache only with publisher or driver instructions, then allow it to rebuild.
- Test an alternate supported API. Compare DX11, DX12, or Vulkan only where the developer supports those paths, changing one variable at a time.
- Escalate with evidence. Include the game build, Windows build, GPU and driver versions, selected renderer, crash time, error text, logs or dump files requested by support, and every step that changed the result.
How to decide whether to update, troubleshoot, or wait

What the broader evidence says about launch bugs
There is no defensible universal percentage for launch causes. Prevalence changes with the title, patch, hardware mix, driver, operating system, launcher, and date. Steam Support explicitly notes that the number of unique hardware and software configurations makes launch failures difficult to diagnose. Treat percentages quoted without those qualifications skeptically.
A 2021 software-engineering study, We’ll Fix It in Post: What Do Bug Fixes in Video Game Update Notes Tell Us?, examined 12,122 bug fixes across 723 updates and 30 popular Steam games. That scale demonstrates how substantial post-release maintenance is, but it does not establish a universal split between launch failures, graphics bugs, save issues, or other categories. Use the concrete symptom and reproducibility of your own failure as stronger evidence than a generic statistic.
Information to send a developer
A useful report lets support reproduce the same layer of failure. Include:
- Game title, build number, storefront, and whether the problem began after a patch.
- Windows edition and build, GPU model, driver version, CPU, system memory, and whether graphics are integrated or discrete.
- Selected renderer, launch options, monitor configuration, and whether mods are installed.
- The exact sequence from clicking Launch to failure, including shader compilation time and any visible error code.
- Results of verification, overlay removal, runtime repair, alternate-renderer testing, and cache procedures.
- Requested crash dumps, logs, or system reports attached through the developer’s official support form.
Do not attach personal files or saves unless support specifically requests them. Preserve the original error text and timestamps; paraphrasing can remove the detail that identifies a failing component.
