Black Ops 7’s biggest multiplayer change is integration. Multiplayer, Co-Op Campaign, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade 4 and Warzone feed a connected progression system where supported. Classic Prestige returns with 10 Prestiges and a route to Prestige Master Level 1000, Weapon Prestige comes back for the first time since Black Ops 4, and matchmaking now offers more choice between variety-focused Open playlists and structured Ranked Play.
What is new in Black Ops 7 multiplayer?
The multiplayer design combines familiar Call of Duty gunplay with systems that are no longer isolated to one mode. Level XP, weapon development, camo challenges and other progression can carry between Multiplayer and the supported parts of Co-Op Campaign, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade 4 and Warzone. The Career menu provides the central view of your level, challenges, statistics and customization, so changing modes does not mean abandoning your long-term progression.

Connected progression changes how you choose a mode
Players gain Level XP from performance, objectives, Medals and challenges rather than only from traditional Multiplayer matches. A Zombies session or a Co-Op Campaign mission can therefore contribute to the same global level track as a 6v6 game. Weapon progression and camo requirements are also designed to work across supported modes, although the exact requirement can differ by weapon class or mode.

A broader launch toolkit
The launch multiplayer systems add new weapons, Perks, attachments, Equipment, Field Upgrades and Scorestreaks. Overclock systems provide another layer of in-match or loadout planning, while Weapon Build Sharing lets players share configured builds instead of describing every attachment manually.
The mode lineup also extends beyond standard 6v6. A September 2025 Multiplayer Deep Dive described 16 6v6 maps and two 20v20 Skirmish maps before launch. The November 2025 worldwide launch post reported 18 Multiplayer maps. Those figures describe different points in the release cycle, so a map count should always be dated rather than presented as a timeless total.

How Black Ops 7 progression works
Black Ops 7 uses one global Level Unlock track. You start at Level 1, identified as Private I, and progress to Level 55, identified as Commander. XP is awarded for match performance, objectives, Medals and challenges across the connected modes. Level unlocks include weapons, Equipment, Perks, Wildcards, Scorestreaks, Operators and other loadout or customization items.
The Career menu is the progression hub
The Career menu brings together the information that used to be scattered between mode menus. Use it to check your current level, available challenges, statistics, customization and the progress of your mastery goals. Because supported modes contribute to the same track, the menu is also the clearest way to see whether a challenge is available outside Multiplayer.

What happens at Level 55
Reaching Level 55 does not end the progression system. You can enter a Prestige, which returns your level to Level 1 and relocks level-unlock content. The reset is deliberately selective: it affects the standard level track, not the work already invested in weapons or account-wide records.
| Progression element | After entering Prestige |
|---|---|
| Player level and level-unlock items | Level returns to 1 and level-unlock content is relocked |
| Weapon progression | Retained |
| Operators | Retained |
| Challenge progress | Retained |
| Mastery Badges | Retained |
| Weapon Builds | Retained |
| Customization | Retained |
| Battle Pass, Store, Weekly Challenge and seasonal-event items | Not relocked |
There are 10 Prestiges. After completing them, progression continues through Prestige Master, eventually reaching Level 1000. Prestige Master adds further titles, colors and legacy Prestige icons, giving high-level players goals after the ordinary level-unlock cycle has been repeated.
Classic Prestige and Weapon Prestige explained
Player Prestige
Classic Prestige is an opt-in reset with permanent account benefits. The practical trade-off is straightforward: you give up immediate access to level-gated loadout items, but preserve the weapon, operator, challenge and customization work that would otherwise make a reset feel punitive. Players who want to keep unlocking items without interruption can remain at the top of the ordinary level track; players who want visible long-term status can Prestige and work toward the next icon.

Weapon Prestige returns in Black Ops 7 for the first time since Black Ops 4. Each weapon has two Weapon Prestiges. Entering one provides a Prestige Attachment that changes the weapon build, along with unique weapon camos and other rewards. Because weapon progression is connected across supported modes, you can advance a weapon in the mode where its challenge is most practical, subject to that weapon’s stated requirements.

Weapon Prestige is separate from player Prestige. Resetting your player level does not erase weapon progression, and working on a weapon does not require you to Prestige your account. Treat the systems as two parallel goals: player Prestige rewards repeated career-level advancement, while Weapon Prestige rewards concentrating on an individual gun.
Military, Special and Mastery Camos
Launch weapons use a three-stage camo journey:
- Military Camos: the foundational challenge tier, with criteria tied to the weapon and mode.
- Special Camos: an intermediate tier with its own requirements.
- Mastery Camos: the top camo stage, earned after meeting the applicable mastery conditions.
The official reveal described 30 launch weapons and 16 Mastery Camos. Requirements vary by weapon class and mode, so a challenge that is efficient in Multiplayer may have a different route in Zombies or another supported activity. Read the individual challenge text rather than assuming that one universal kill or objective condition applies everywhere.
Is skill-based matchmaking different in Black Ops 7?
There is no single permanent formula published as the complete Black Ops 7 matchmaking algorithm. Activision’s general Call of Duty matchmaking explanation identifies several inputs used to assemble matches:
- Connection quality
- Time required to find a match
- Skill and recent performance
- Platform
- Voice-chat considerations
- Input device
- Recently played maps and modes
- Playlist diversity
That list is a methodology reference, not a promise that every factor has the same weight in every playlist or season. Matchmaking can be tuned as populations, playlists and updates change. A player’s experience can therefore differ between a launch playlist, a later seasonal playlist and Ranked Play.

- Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
- This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
- The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
- In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
What changed during testing and seasonal updates
Black Ops 7 beta notes documented matchmaking updates and playlist changes during testing. Later seasonal communications described Open or classic-inspired playlist options with reduced consideration of skill, while modern Open options remained available. The important distinction is that “Open” does not necessarily describe one unchanging queue: playlist rules and the balance between connection, wait time, performance and variety can change.
For a current claim about a specific queue, check the active patch or playlist note. A statement that Open matchmaking uses less skill weighting can be accurate for the playlist described in that communication without proving that every Open playlist, every region or every season behaves identically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Open Multiplayer versus Ranked Play
Open Multiplayer is the variety-oriented side of the game. It is where players find the broadest rotation of public modes, seasonal experiments and modern playlist choices. Ranked Play is the standardized competitive lane, built around a fixed ruleset and a visible rating outcome.
| Aspect | Open Multiplayer | Ranked Play |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Variety, public matchmaking and seasonal playlist experimentation | Structured competitive matches |
| Skill consideration | Varies by playlist; classic-inspired options describe reduced skill consideration | Competitive rating is central to the mode |
| Rules and weapons | Uses the rules of the selected public playlist | Uses Call of Duty League settings, maps, modes and weapon restrictions |
| Rating feedback | No Ranked-style SR result is the defining outcome | Post-match summaries explain SR earned or lost |
| Map and mode pool | Broader and more seasonally variable | Constrained by the competitive ruleset |
| Queue experience | Connection, wait time, performance and playlist variety are balanced according to the active playlist | Competitive eligibility and the Ranked ruleset shape the available matches |
Choose Open when variety is the priority
Open playlists are the better fit when you want to level weapons, complete mode-specific challenges, try new seasonal rules or play a broader map and mode rotation. They also let you choose among playlist types whose skill consideration may differ. The trade-off is that the experience is less standardized: the active playlist, population and season influence the matchmaking behavior.

Choose Ranked when consistency and competitive feedback matter
Ranked Play is designed for players who want the same competitive framework from match to match. Call of Duty League settings, maps, modes and weapon restrictions narrow the variables, while the post-match SR explanation shows how the result affected your rating. It is not simply an Open match with a leaderboard added; the rules and available content are intentionally constrained.
How the changes affect a practical play session
- Pick the goal before the mode. For general XP, use any supported mode. For a particular weapon or camo, open its challenge description and select the mode that satisfies the listed condition most efficiently.
- Check the Career menu. Confirm your global level, challenge progress and available unlocks before switching modes. This prevents you from assuming that a mode-specific reward belongs to a separate progression track.
- Decide whether to Prestige at Level 55. Prestige if you want the icon and long-term level chase and can accept relocking level-unlock items. Stay outside Prestige if immediate access to those items is more important.
- Separate player and weapon goals. Player Prestige and Weapon Prestige are independent. A reset of your player level does not wipe weapon builds or weapon challenge progress.
- Select Open or Ranked deliberately. Use Open for variety and seasonal experimentation; use Ranked for the competitive ruleset and SR feedback.
- Verify volatile playlist details. Before drawing conclusions about skill weighting, map rotations or restrictions, read the current playlist or patch note because those settings can change.
What has not changed into a single promise
Connected progression does not mean every challenge is identical in every mode. Camo criteria can vary by weapon class and activity, and support for a particular progression item should be confirmed in its description. Likewise, the existence of an Open playlist with reduced skill consideration does not establish that all matchmaking ignores skill, nor does Activision’s general factor list disclose a fixed numerical weighting.
The map count also needs a date. The pre-launch deep dive and the worldwide launch communication reported different totals because they described different release points. Use the launch-era figure only with its November 2025 context, and use the earlier breakdown when discussing the September 2025 pre-launch plan.
