What Changed in the Half-Life 2 Anniversary Update—and Is It Worth Revisiting?

The 2024 Half-Life 2 Anniversary Update adds both episodes, commentary, Workshop support and visual refinements—not a remake. Here’s what to expect, including the 2025 fixes and the separate RTX project.

Yes—Valve’s November 15, 2024 Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update makes a replay more inviting by adding both episodes to the main menu, developer commentary, Steam Workshop support, graphics options and fixes. It is a substantial package update, not a remake: the core campaign and story were not rewritten. A July 2025 patch later corrected three specific gameplay issues.

What the Half-Life 2 Anniversary Update adds

Valve released the 20th Anniversary Update on November 15, 2024. Its biggest practical change for returning players is that Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two are now included in the game and accessible from its main menu. Valve says players automatically advance to the next expansion after completing each one. Valve’s anniversary announcement called it “Episodes One and Two are in the box.”

More to hear and play with

  • 3.5 hours of developer commentary: Valve added commentary for the base campaign, offering context while playing.
  • Integrated Steam Workshop support: Players can access user-created content through the Workshop.
  • Expanded package: The two episodes are part of the Half-Life 2 experience rather than separate entries to launch from elsewhere.

These additions make the update more than a visual refresh. They offer new ways to experience the existing campaign and continue through its episodes, but Valve’s announcement does not describe a rewritten story or a new campaign.

What changed in the graphics and presentation

Valve added graphics options and fixed visual problems that had accumulated over time, including cases where maps or props appeared fully bright or dark under certain settings, and missing sprites. The patch notes also describe several targeted refinements:

#1 Best Overall
Half-Life 2: Episode Pack - PC
  • Battle new alien foes.
  • Drive new vehicles through new locations beyond City 17.
  • Discover more about the award-winning story of Half-Life.
  • Over 15 hours of award-winning single player gaming.
  • Battle online with Half-Life 2: Deathmatch – included for no additional charge.
  • Bicubic lightmap filtering for smoother shadows, enabled when Shader Detail is set to Very High.
  • Restored grass detail sprites, radial fog, and adjusted specular reflectivity.
  • Updated ultrawide support for the Crossbow and RPG models.
  • A High Model Detail setting that keeps the highest-detail model.
  • Settings for classic effects.

The effect is a more configurable and polished presentation of the original game, not a wholesale asset remake. The update’s options let players choose how some elements appear; they do not replace Half-Life 2’s underlying campaign.

What the July 2025 patch fixed

Valve followed up on July 23, 2025 with fixes for three issues. The official Half-Life 2 Steam news feed lists the patch:

  • Restored train speed near the end of Highway 17 to better match the original shipped difficulty.
  • Fixed collision that allowed NPCs to shoot through some walls in Entanglement.
  • Fixed Alyx obstructing the player while boarding the teleporter near the end of Entanglement.

Valve said the map updates would not break existing saves. However, if a progress-blocking bug has already left a player with a save made in a blocked state, restarting the current chapter may be necessary.

Is the update worth a replay?

For someone who has not played the episodes or wants an easier route through the complete Half-Life 2 story, the anniversary package is a clear reason to return. Commentary gives repeat players additional context, while Workshop content and presentation settings provide optional ways to change a run. Players primarily seeking a new story or a full modern graphics remake should temper expectations: this update improves and expands the package, but the core campaign remains Half-Life 2.

Half-Life 2 RTX is a separate project

Half-Life 2 RTX is not part of Valve’s anniversary update. It is a community-made remaster project by Orbifold Studios using NVIDIA RTX Remix, with ray-traced lighting, remade textures and models, and upgraded levels. Its project description says it leaves the gameplay untouched. The distinction matters: the anniversary update adds episodes, commentary, Workshop support and refinements; RTX focuses on a graphics overhaul.

The official Half-Life 2 RTX Steam announcement describes a demo featuring Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt. For that demo, it recommends a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti as the minimum GPU and describes DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. That recommendation is for the RTX demo, not the standard anniversary-updated game. The official information cited here does not establish the RTX project’s current full-release status or current requirements, so do not assume the demo specification applies to a later release.
