In the United States, both the original Bully and Bully: Scholarship Edition are rated Teen by the ESRB, generally suitable for ages 13 and up. The original carries the descriptors Crude Humor, Language, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, and Violence. Scholarship Edition carries the same warnings plus Animated Blood.
Australian classifications list the game as M, with the advice “Moderate themes, violence and sexual references.” An Australian IARC record dated 2 August 2024 lists Bully as M for “Violence, Sexual References, Crude Humour.” Ratings depend on country, edition, platform and storefront, so check the label attached to the exact copy you are considering.

The current rating at a glance
There is no single worldwide age rating for Bully. The same game can display different labels because each national authority applies its own system, and because the original release and Scholarship Edition have separate records.

The labels are not interchangeable age numbers. “Teen” is the ESRB category and is generally intended for players 13 and older. Australia’s “M” is an Australian classification category accompanied by consumer advice; it should not be converted into an American or European number without checking the relevant local authority.

What the ESRB warnings mean
Violence
Violence is listed for both U.S. editions. Fighting is a core activity in the game, so this is not a peripheral warning. The descriptor tells a parent that confrontations and other violent material are present, but it does not provide a scene-by-scene inventory or describe every instance, intensity or context.
Animated Blood
Scholarship Edition adds the ESRB descriptor Animated Blood. That is the one warning in the U.S. records that differs between the two editions. It identifies stylized or animated blood effects; the rating record does not, by itself, establish that the game contains realistic gore or provide a percentage of play time involving blood.
Language
Both U.S. records include Language. Parents should therefore expect spoken or written expressions that the ESRB considers relevant to its Teen category. The descriptor does not list individual words, give a count, or claim that every conversation uses strong language.

Sexual Themes and sexual references
The ESRB uses Sexual Themes for both editions. Australian advice uses the phrase sexual references, both in the older classifications and in the 2024 IARC entry. These are category labels: they establish that sexual subject matter or references occur, but they do not claim graphic sexual content beyond what the rating authority specifies. A parent who needs scene-level detail should not treat the short descriptor list as a complete content guide.
Use of Alcohol and Tobacco
The ESRB lists Use of Alcohol and Tobacco for both U.S. editions. This warns that those substances appear in the game or are used in its content. The rating does not say that the game teaches, endorses or glorifies substance use, and it does not quantify how often it appears.
Crude Humor
Crude Humor appears on both U.S. records. Australia’s 2 August 2024 IARC entry uses the spelling Crude Humour. This descriptor covers humor that the rating authority considers coarse or socially inappropriate; it is separate from the language and sexual-content descriptors.

Is Bully appropriate for a 13-year-old?
Under the ESRB system, a 13-year-old is within the Teen category’s general age range. That is a starting point, not an automatic recommendation for every child. The same official label combines violence, language, sexual themes, alcohol and tobacco, and crude humor; Scholarship Edition also lists animated blood. Whether that mix is acceptable depends on the child’s maturity, sensitivity and your family’s rules.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Some families may be comfortable with cartoon-like fighting but not sexual references; others may focus on language or depictions of alcohol and tobacco. The rating does not make that value judgment for you.
It is also important to distinguish “generally suitable for ages 13 and up” from a guarantee that the game is suitable for every 13-year-old. Ratings summarize content categories. They do not know a particular child’s fears, past experiences, reading level or family standards, and they do not replace supervision for a younger or sensitive player.

Why the U.S. label says Teen while Australia says M
National systems use different categories, terminology and decision rules. The U.S. ESRB places both editions in Teen and prints a list of content descriptors. Australia records the releases as M and supplies consumer advice about moderate themes, violence and sexual references. The two labels are not contradictory: they are classifications from different authorities, not competing updates to one universal scale.
Edition and platform can matter as well. The original U.S. record covers PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 4, while the Scholarship Edition record covers Windows PC, Wii, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. A digital storefront may display a local rating supplied through its own classification process, and that display can differ from the label on an older physical box. Always compare like with like: country, edition and platform.

- Identify the edition. Look for Bully or Bully: Scholarship Edition in the product name. Do not assume that a “Bully” listing uses the same record as the expanded edition.
- Identify the market. Confirm the country associated with the box, account, console store or PC storefront. A U.S. ESRB label and an Australian classification answer different regulatory questions.
- Read the full descriptor line. For a U.S. copy, check whether the line includes Animated Blood in addition to Crude Humor, Language, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, and Violence. For an Australian copy, read the exact M consumer advice shown.
- Check the date and platform context when available. Older physical releases and newer digital records can carry different classification entries. The Australian records include classifications from 2006, 2008 and 2024, so a newer storefront entry should not be assumed to be identical to an older box.
- Review your device’s parental controls. The ESRB says parental controls are available on virtually all game devices. Use the controls to restrict games by rating where supported, and separately review communication, spending and play-time settings if those options are offered.
- Make the decision using both the label and your family rules. If one descriptor is a deal-breaker, the presence of that descriptor is enough to rule out the purchase; you do not need to infer additional details from the age category.
What the ratings do—and do not—tell you
They provide a standardized warning summary
The ESRB’s stated purpose is to provide information about what is in a game or app so parents can make informed choices. The listed categories give you a consistent first screen: violence, language, sexual themes, alcohol and tobacco, crude humor, and, for Scholarship Edition, animated blood.

They are not a complete scene guide
The official descriptors are concise. They do not enumerate every mission, line of dialogue, character interaction or optional activity. “Sexual Themes” and “sexual references” should not be expanded into claims about graphic content that the authority did not make, just as “Violence” does not specify every form or intensity of a confrontation.
They do not establish an exact digital-storefront label everywhere
Country and storefront records can change. The evidence available for Australia includes a 2024 IARC entry, while the older Australian classifications are dated 2006 and 2008. A parent should inspect the live listing or package in the region where the game will be played instead of copying a label from another country.
They do not supply every international rating
No PEGI or BBFC Bully record is established here. Do not print or rely on a European or United Kingdom age number unless it appears on the local authority’s current listing or on the exact product listing. The U.S. and Australian results cannot safely be relabeled as a PEGI or BBFC classification.
A practical parent checklist
- Confirm whether the copy is the original game or Scholarship Edition.
- Confirm the country and platform before interpreting the label.
- Read every descriptor, not only the headline age category.
- For the U.S. version, account for violence, language, sexual themes, alcohol and tobacco, and crude humor; add animated blood for Scholarship Edition.
- For Australia, read the M advice: “Moderate themes, violence and sexual references,” and note that the 2 August 2024 IARC entry also names crude humour.
- Consider the individual child’s maturity and sensitivities rather than treating 13 as a guarantee.
- Set device parental controls before the game is launched.
- Recheck the rating on a digital storefront if the listing, region or edition changes.
Bottom line for families
The clearest U.S. answer is Teen, generally 13+, for both editions. The original lists Crude Humor, Language, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, and Violence; Scholarship Edition adds Animated Blood. Australian records use M with advice about moderate themes, violence and sexual references, with the 2024 IARC record also naming crude humour. Treat those labels as a focused content warning, verify the exact local listing, and make the final choice using your child and your household standards.
