For the Steam version of Acts of Blood, an Xbox-layout controller is the safest default. The official Steam page lists Full Controller Support and specifically names Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers. Choose a PlayStation pad if you already prefer that layout. There is no published testing showing that an arcade stick, six-button pad, paddles, gyro, or premium model performs better in Acts of Blood, so those are preference purchases rather than proven advantages.
The important qualification is that Acts of Blood is still being developed. Controller mappings can change before the final release, so treat current prompts as provisional and check the release build before assuming a particular button assignment is permanent.

Quick answer: which controller should you use?
If you want one recommendation without experimenting, use a conventional Xbox-layout pad connected to your PC. It is explicitly supported on the Steam listing, and its ABXY labels usually correspond most clearly to the button names shown in Windows PC games. That readability point is a practical inference, not a developer-published ranking or a performance test.
| Controller type | What the available evidence establishes | Best fit | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox-layout controller | Xbox Controllers are listed under Acts of Blood’s Full Controller Support on Steam. | Most players buying a pad specifically for this PC game; readers who want familiar ABXY prompts. | No source proves that Xbox hardware has lower input latency or better combat performance than another supported pad. |
| PlayStation DualShock or DualSense | PlayStation Controllers are listed on Steam, and SteamDB records DualShock and DualSense metadata for the game. | Players who already own or prefer PlayStation hardware. | No source confirms that every icon, light, adaptive-trigger, or haptic feature is implemented. |
| Arcade stick or six-button fight pad | The published compatibility information does not document a special arcade-control mode or comparative test. | Players who specifically prefer a large, clicky digital direction control or already use an arcade setup. | No evidence shows an advantage in Acts of Blood’s third-person movement and hand-to-hand combat. |
| Premium pad with paddles, gyro, or remapping | No source evaluates these features in Acts of Blood. | Players buying for broader PC use, accessibility, or a personal remapping workflow. | Do not pay a premium expecting a game-specific performance gain. |
Official compatibility details are on the Acts of Blood Steam store page. SteamDB provides independent metadata for the same app at its Acts of Blood entry.

What “full controller support” means here
Steam’s Full Controller Support label is the strongest direct compatibility signal available for this game. The listing names both Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers, so the two mainstream pad families are the sensible starting point. It does not, by itself, rank one family above the other, promise a particular wireless adapter, or certify every third-party controller that copies one of those layouts.
Full support also should not be read as a guarantee that every platform-specific feature behaves identically. A controller can send ordinary button, stick, trigger, and directional inputs while still showing a different on-screen icon set, requiring a cable instead of Bluetooth, or lacking special functions such as motion aiming. The store information establishes compatibility categories, not a complete feature matrix.
SteamDB’s record of DualShock and DualSense metadata independently corroborates PlayStation-family support. That is useful if you own a PS4- or PS5-era pad, but it is still not a promise that every revision, third-party clone, or accessory will be recognized in exactly the same way.

Clearer labels for a Windows PC game
Xbox-style pads label the four face buttons A, B, X, and Y. Those labels are common in PC instructions and make it easy to translate a prompt when you are moving between a keyboard description and a controller. This is a communication and familiarity advantage, not evidence that the buttons register faster.
Good fit for a third-person beat ’em up
Acts of Blood is described on Steam as a third-person beat ’em up focused on fast-paced hand-to-hand combat. A conventional dual-stick pad gives you simultaneous movement and camera control, face buttons for attacks or contextual actions, and analog triggers for functions that may be assigned there. The sources do not publish the complete final layout, so do not buy a controller on the assumption that a particular attack must be on a particular button.
When not to choose Xbox layout
If you already use a PlayStation controller comfortably, switching layouts solely for this game is unnecessary. Familiarity reduces mistakes during fast encounters, and PlayStation controllers are explicitly listed as supported. Choose the layout your hands already understand unless a specific accessibility or connection requirement points elsewhere.

Using a DualShock or DualSense
A DualShock or DualSense is a reasonable choice for Acts of Blood when it is the controller you already own. The Steam listing includes PlayStation Controllers, while SteamDB records DualShock and DualSense support metadata. Connect the pad to Windows by USB or by a compatible Bluetooth setup, launch the game through Steam, and confirm that inputs register before starting a serious play session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExpect one possible difference: the physical symbols on a PlayStation pad do not match the letters on an Xbox prompt. If the game displays generic button positions or Xbox-style letters, use the controller’s physical position rather than guessing from the symbol. The available sources do not establish whether the final build will offer an in-game prompt selector, so do not assume that an icon-swap option exists.
There is also no evidence that DualSense adaptive triggers, advanced haptics, touch-surface gestures, or the light bar receive special treatment. Treat those as hardware features for other games, not as reasons to expect extra functionality in Acts of Blood.
Do you need an arcade stick or six-button pad?
No. Nothing in the published compatibility information says that Acts of Blood requires an arcade stick, and no published compatibility source compares one against a standard pad. Arcade hardware can feel excellent for games built around discrete directional inputs and repeated attack buttons, but Acts of Blood’s store description emphasizes third-person movement as well as hand-to-hand combat. That makes a two-stick gamepad the least speculative recommendation.
Choose an arcade stick or a six-button pad only for a personal reason:
- You already perform better with a large, separated digital direction control.
- You want a wired connection and do not need analog sticks.
- You use a switch-accessible or remapped layout that a particular arcade device provides.
- You play several other fighting or arcade games and want one controller for all of them.
Those are valid preferences, but they are not Acts of Blood performance findings. A specialist controller may also need a compatible input mode or remapping layer on Windows; verify that it appears as a usable game controller before relying on it.

What matters most in a beat ’em-up controller
Directional control
For a third-person game, the left stick is normally the primary movement device and the right stick is normally used for camera control. A pad with a comfortable stick grip and a stable central position is therefore a safer general choice than a device designed only around a flat digital direction pad. If you prefer a D-pad for menus or occasional precise taps, make sure it is easy to reach without losing control of the sticks.
Face-button spacing
Fast combat often involves alternating attacks, defensive actions, and movement. Buttons that are easy to distinguish by touch can matter more than decorative features. Compare the shape and spacing of the controller in your own hands, especially if you use a claw grip or have limited finger reach.
Triggers, bumpers, and back buttons
The sources document one development-era example in which dodge was mapped to Space on the keyboard and LT on a controller. That shows that a trigger can be assigned to an important action, but it does not establish the final map. A controller with comfortable triggers is sensible; paddles are optional convenience features, not proven necessities.

Connection and latency
Wired USB removes battery concerns and avoids one class of wireless pairing problems. Bluetooth can be convenient and may work well, but behavior depends on the adapter, operating-system drivers, and competing wireless devices. Because no source supplies latency measurements for Acts of Blood, choose the connection you can keep stable rather than paying for a claimed advantage that has not been demonstrated for this game.
Accessibility and remapping
Remappable buttons, alternate grips, larger controls, and switch-compatible hardware can be more important than the Xbox-versus-PlayStation question. If you need one of those features, prioritize a device that works with your established accessibility setup, then confirm that Acts of Blood receives the remapped inputs correctly.

- Connect the controller. Start with USB if you are troubleshooting. For Bluetooth, pair the controller in Windows first and confirm that it appears in the operating system’s game-controller list.
- Open Steam’s controller settings. In the Steam client, open Settings and the controller section, then verify that the relevant support option or detected-device entry is enabled. Steam may show Xbox, PlayStation, or generic controller categories.
- Check the game’s properties. From your Library, open Acts of Blood’s Properties and review the Controller page. If Steam offers a per-game override, leave it at the recommended default initially; change it only when the game fails to read a button or when you deliberately need remapping.
- Launch and test in a safe area. Press each face button, both sticks, the bumpers, triggers, and the directional pad. Check movement, camera control, attack input, and dodge without entering a difficult encounter.
- Record the prompts you see. If the game shows letters while you use a PlayStation pad, note the physical button position. Do not infer that an icon mismatch means the controller is unsupported.
- Retest after updates. Keep a note of any custom mapping. A future build can change an assignment, so repeat the short input check after a significant update or when the final release arrives.
Controller mappings are still provisional
Acts of Blood is not yet available in its final release state according to the Steam listing. The developer’s Steam Community announcements document ongoing development and include a change in which dodge is shown as Space on keyboard and LT on controller. That example is valuable because it demonstrates that bindings can move while development continues; it is not a promise that LT will remain dodge in the finished game.

Button prompts: will they match your controller?
Compatibility and prompt style are separate questions. Steam explicitly lists Xbox and PlayStation controller families, but the supplied information does not state whether Acts of Blood automatically swaps every on-screen symbol for the connected device. An Xbox pad may produce letter prompts that feel immediately familiar; a PlayStation pad may show the same positions with symbols, generic labels, or a layout selected by the game or Steam.
If a prompt looks unfamiliar, use this method:
- Identify the physical location of the requested button instead of translating the letter by memory.
- Pause and open the current control settings, if the build provides them.
- Test the action in a low-risk moment before relying on it in combat.
- Do not treat a symbol mismatch as proof of failed compatibility unless the input itself does not register.
The final release may clarify whether prompt selection is automatic or configurable. Until then, the safest expectation is support for both controller families with some uncertainty about presentation details.

The controller is not detected
Reconnect by USB, close and reopen Steam, and verify that Windows sees the device before launching the game. If another remapping program is translating the controller, temporarily disable that layer so you can test the game with one input path. Try the controller’s standard PC mode if it has multiple modes.

The game responds but prompts are confusing
This is usually a layout or icon issue rather than a connection failure. Compare the requested position with the physical pad, write down the mapping that works in the current build, and avoid changing several layers of remapping at once.
Wireless input drops out
Charge the pad, move the receiver or computer away from obvious interference, and test with a cable. If USB is stable, the game and controller are probably compatible and the remaining problem is the wireless path rather than Acts of Blood’s control scheme.
An update changed the controls
Assume the update is authoritative for that build. Recheck the control screen and the developer announcements, then remove obsolete custom mappings before creating new ones. The documented Space-to-LT dodge example is why an older chart may no longer apply.
A practical choice for other beat ’em ups
The same decision framework works beyond Acts of Blood, but individual games can differ. Check the store page for controller-support language and look for a current control guide before buying specialized hardware.
| Your priority | Most sensible starting point | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest uncertainty on a Windows PC | Xbox-layout pad | Acts of Blood explicitly lists Xbox Controllers, and ABXY labels are easy to follow in PC instructions. | It may not match the layout you already prefer. |
| You already own a PlayStation pad | DualShock or DualSense | PlayStation Controllers are explicitly supported, with DualShock and DualSense metadata also recorded. | Prompt symbols may require position-based translation. |
| Digital precision is your personal priority | Arcade stick or six-button pad | Can suit players who strongly prefer a firm digital direction control. | No published evidence proves a benefit in Acts of Blood; analog movement may be less convenient. |
| Accessibility or custom reach | Remappable or adaptive controller | Lets you place actions where your hands can reach them reliably. | Compatibility depends on the device and remapping path, which the sources do not detail. |
| One controller for many genres | Standard dual-stick pad | Balances movement, camera control, menus, and common action layouts. | May lack the specialized feel of an arcade device. |
For any other beat ’em up, replace assumptions with that game’s own support list. A controller that is excellent for a two-dimensional fighter is not automatically ideal for a third-person action game.
Buying checklist
- Confirm that the product presents itself to Windows as an Xbox, PlayStation, or standard game controller.
- Choose a stick layout and grip that you can use without fatigue during repeated movement and camera adjustments.
- Prefer a stable wired option if wireless pairing has caused problems for you before.
- Buy paddles, gyro, extra buttons, or an arcade gate only when you have a specific use for them outside an unproven Acts of Blood advantage.
- Keep the receipt or return option until you have tested every input in the current game build.
- Recheck compatibility and mappings when Acts of Blood reaches its final release.
Bottom line
Use an Xbox-layout controller as the default recommendation for Acts of Blood on Steam. A DualShock or DualSense is an equally sensible supported alternative when that is the layout you already know. You do not need an arcade stick, six-button pad, or premium controller to play, and no available source proves that one will make combat better. Because the game remains in development and controller assignments can change, test your pad after updates and verify the final release mapping rather than relying on an early control chart.
