What Devices and Storage Space Do You Need for Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A works on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s US store listing gives the Nintendo Switch version a 6 GB file size and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition an 11.3 GB file size. Official Pokémon product information gives regional minimum figures of 5 GB or more and 10 GB or more, respectively, and warns that installation may require additional free capacity.

You can play on a television, in tabletop mode or handheld on supported Switch hardware. An original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED uses the standard microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC formats; Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card. A card is optional when the console has enough free internal storage, but digital games, updates and downloadable content can make expandable storage useful.

Question Answer
Which consoles run the game? Nintendo Switch family and Nintendo Switch 2
Release date October 16, 2025
Nintendo Switch listing size 6 GB
Nintendo Switch 2 listing size 11.3 GB
Official regional minimums 5 GB or more for Switch; 10 GB or more for Switch 2
Card standard for original Switch models microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC
Card standard for Switch 2 microSD Express only
Maximum supported card capacity Up to 2 TB

The figures are storage requirements published by Nintendo and Pokémon, not a promise that exactly that amount will remain occupied after installation. Keep free capacity beyond the headline number so the console can complete installation and accommodate updates.

Which devices can play Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED

The game is available for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s listing identifies television, tabletop and handheld play modes, so the compatible Switch family covers the regular dockable console, the handheld-only Switch Lite and the Switch OLED model. The listing does not make the game exclusive to a particular screen model.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you own an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED, look for the Nintendo Switch version when buying a digital copy or a game card. The console model changes how you play, not the basic platform compatibility stated for the game.

Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo also lists a Pokémon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It is the enhanced version identified for Nintendo Switch 2. The official information establishes that the edition is supported on Switch 2, but does not publish a complete frame-rate, resolution or graphics-feature comparison. Claims about specific performance targets should therefore not be treated as confirmed specifications.

Release date

Nintendo lists October 16, 2025 as the release date. That date identifies the launch listing; regional storefront availability, stock and purchase format can still differ.

How much storage does each version need?

Nintendo Switch: 6 GB in Nintendo’s US listing

Nintendo’s US eShop listing states a 6 GB file size for the Nintendo Switch version. This is the clearest US storefront figure for planning a digital download, but it is not a guarantee of the final space used after installation, patches or downloadable content.

Nintendo Switch 2: 11.3 GB in Nintendo’s US listing

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is listed at 11.3 GB in the US. Because this is a different edition with its own listing, do not plan Switch 2 storage from the 6 GB Switch figure.

Why another official page says 5 GB and 10 GB

Official Pokémon product information uses minimum wording: “5 GB or more” for Nintendo Switch and “10 GB or more” for Nintendo Switch 2. The difference from Nintendo’s US storefront figures is best understood as regional wording and rounding, not as evidence that one source describes a different game. The minimum figures also come with an explicit warning that installation can require more free capacity.

For planning purposes, treat 6 GB and 11.3 GB as the US listing sizes, while treating 5 GB and 10 GB as rounded minimum statements from another official regional source. Neither should be read as a guaranteed permanent installed footprint.

Do you need a microSD card?

No. A memory card is optional when the console’s available system storage can hold the game and any required installation data. A card becomes useful when you keep several digital games, updates or downloadable-content packages, or when the console reports insufficient free space.

Downloadable software, updates and DLC can be stored on a compatible memory card. Save data is different: Nintendo states that save data remains in the console’s system memory rather than on the card. Removing or replacing a card therefore does not move your save files onto that card.

Which memory card works with each console?

Console Supported card types Capacity range stated by Nintendo
Nintendo Switch microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 2 TB
Nintendo Switch Lite microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 2 TB
Nintendo Switch OLED microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC microSDXC cards from 64 GB to 2 TB
Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express only Up to 2 TB

Original Switch models use the established microSD formats

For Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED, Nintendo supports microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards. Nintendo’s stated microSDXC range is 64 GB through 2 TB. A card in that supported family is the relevant choice for storing downloadable software, updates and DLC on an original Switch console.

Switch 2 requires microSD Express

Nintendo’s support guidance is unambiguous: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” The supported capacity is up to 2 TB, and the cards are sold separately. When shopping for Switch 2 storage, the words microSD Express must appear in the specification; a generic microSDXC card that works in an older Switch is not the same compatibility standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an old Switch card may not carry over

A memory card used for Switch software cannot simply be treated as Switch 2 game storage unless it meets the microSD Express requirement. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance distinguishes the standards, so check the card type before attempting to use an existing card in Switch 2. The physical size may look familiar, but the supported format is what determines compatibility.

Digital download or physical game card?

The storage figures above are most directly useful when you are downloading the game. Before starting a digital installation, check the console’s available system storage and leave room beyond the listed file size for the installation process and future updates.

If you prefer a physical game card, confirm that you are buying the edition for your console: the Nintendo Switch release and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition are separate listings. A physical purchase does not change the requirement to use the correct storage standard for any downloadable software, updates or DLC you later add. Exact packaging and regional purchase details should be checked at the retailer or on the product listing for the edition you intend to buy.

How to prepare your console before installing

  1. Identify the hardware. Confirm whether you have a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED or Nintendo Switch 2. The model determines both the edition you should select and the memory-card standard.
  2. Choose the matching listing. Select the Nintendo Switch version for the original Switch family, or the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for Switch 2.
  3. Check available storage. Open the console’s storage-management screen and look at free system space before downloading. Compare that figure with the appropriate Nintendo listing size, not with the other platform’s number.
  4. Decide whether a card is necessary. If free internal space is sufficient, you can install without a card. If it is tight, prepare a compatible card before beginning.
  5. Use the correct card standard. Original Switch hardware accepts supported microSD formats, including microSDXC from 64 GB to 2 TB. Switch 2 accepts microSD Express only, up to 2 TB.
  6. Leave installation headroom. Do not aim for a free-space figure exactly equal to 6 GB or 11.3 GB. The official Pokémon information warns that installation may need more capacity than the stated minimum.
  7. Install and verify. After the download finishes, check the game’s data-management entry and confirm that the console recognizes the installed software and any card you used.

Common storage problems and fixes

The download says there is not enough space

Delete or archive other downloadable software from the storage-management screen, or install a compatible memory card. Remember that the console needs working room during installation; freeing only the exact advertised file size may not resolve the error.

A card works in an older Switch but not in Switch 2

Check whether the card is microSD Express. Switch 2 does not accept ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC cards as a substitute for that standard. A card’s capacity alone does not establish compatibility.

You changed cards and cannot find a save

Save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the memory card. Changing the card therefore should not be treated as a method of moving or backing up save data.

The displayed size does not match the number you expected

Check the platform and region of the listing. Nintendo’s US figures are 6 GB for Switch and 11.3 GB for Switch 2, while official Pokémon information gives rounded minimums of 5 GB or more and 10 GB or more. The difference reflects how the official listings state capacity.

What to remember when buying storage

  • For an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED, choose a supported microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card; Nintendo lists 64 GB to 2 TB for microSDXC.
  • For Switch 2, buy microSD Express, with support up to 2 TB.
  • Cards are optional if internal storage is adequate.
  • Use extra free space beyond the advertised game size for installation and later updates.
  • Keep expectations separate for software storage and save storage: downloadable games, updates and DLC can reside on the card, while save data remains in system memory.

Bottom line for each console owner

If you have a Nintendo Switch family console

Buy the Nintendo Switch version and plan around Nintendo’s 6 GB US listing, while leaving additional room for installation. An ordinary supported microSD-family card is the expandable-storage option if internal space is insufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have Nintendo Switch 2

Buy the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and plan around the 11.3 GB US listing, with extra installation headroom. Any expansion card must be microSD Express; an older Switch card is not automatically suitable.

If you are deciding whether to buy a card

Check free internal capacity first. Purchase a card only when that space, your existing library or planned updates make expansion worthwhile, and match the card standard to the console before buying.
