Yes. You can use the XBOX Nano Controller without owning an Xbox console. It connects by Bluetooth to compatible Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, tablets, iPhones, iPads, Android devices and Smart TVs. Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles use Xbox Wireless instead. A host device and a game or cloud service that accepts controllers are still required; the controller does not run Xbox games by itself.
Supported devices at a glance
The connection method depends on the host. Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless for Xbox consoles and Bluetooth for the other supported device categories. Mobile and Bluetooth support is selective: Microsoft’s store listing says compatibility depends on the device and software version, and that some functionality is not supported.

“Compatible” is important in every mobile and Bluetooth row. A device can have Bluetooth and still lack the operating-system support, game support or app integration needed for all controller functions.
Can you use it without an Xbox console?
Yes. The console-free setup uses Bluetooth rather than Xbox Wireless. The Nano acts as a physical input device for another computer, mobile device, tablet or television. That host then runs the game locally or streams it from a cloud service.

It does not contain the hardware or software needed to run Xbox games independently. You must provide both a compatible host and software that accepts controller input. Microsoft specifically advises using the controller with controller-compatible games.
Local games on a PC or mobile device
On a compatible Windows PC, phone, tablet or iPad, the controller can operate games installed on that device when those games support a gamepad. Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee that every title will recognize it. Some games are designed for keyboard and mouse, touch controls or a different input standard.
Cloud gaming
Cloud gaming adds requirements beyond the controller. Microsoft’s store terms say Xbox Cloud Gaming requires Game Pass, a supported device and internet access. The catalog and availability vary, so a title being available on one device or in one country does not establish that it is available everywhere.

Smart TV play
Xbox Wire describes Samsung TV Gaming Hub as one example: users in select regions can connect a controller and use monthly cloud playtime for Xbox Game Pass titles. This is a television-and-service feature, not evidence that every Smart TV supports the Nano or that every region has the same cloud access.
How to connect the controller over Bluetooth
The wording and menu names can differ by operating system, but the process follows the same sequence.
- Confirm compatibility. Check that the PC, phone, tablet or television is a supported model and that its operating system is within the supported version range. Microsoft does not describe mobile and Bluetooth support as universal.
- Charge the controller. The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery. Microsoft says charging requires a USB-C cable, which is sold separately.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the host. Use the device’s Add device or Pair new device control and leave the Bluetooth screen visible.
- Put the Nano into pairing mode. Use the controller’s pairing control as described in its quick-start instructions. Wait for the controller to appear in the host’s list of available Bluetooth devices.
- Select the controller. Choose XBOX Nano Controller in the Bluetooth list and wait for the host to report that pairing is complete.
- Test it in a supported game or service. Launch a title known to accept controllers and check its input settings. For cloud gaming, also confirm that your Game Pass access, supported device and internet connection meet the service requirements.
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One use Xbox Wireless rather than the Bluetooth procedure above. If you are connecting to a console, follow the console’s normal Xbox Wireless pairing flow.

What each device category is suitable for
Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs
PC is the broadest console-free use case in the official compatibility list. Bluetooth lets the controller connect without an Xbox console, and Microsoft identifies Xbox on PC as compatible. The practical limit is game support: each title must expose controller input, and its control mapping may differ from the layout you expect.

iPhone and iPad
iOS and iPadOS devices can use the Nano over Bluetooth when the specific device and software version are supported. This makes it useful for compatible mobile games and supported cloud-gaming apps or browser experiences. Do not assume that every iPhone, iPad or game has identical support; Microsoft’s qualification covers both device and version.

Android phones and tablets
Android phones and tablets are also listed as Bluetooth targets. Android hardware varies substantially between manufacturers, so check the device and version requirements for the game or cloud service as well as the controller. A successful Bluetooth connection only proves that the operating system can communicate with the controller; the game still has to recognize it.
Tablets
“Tablet” is a category rather than a blanket guarantee. Compatible iPadOS and Android tablets are covered by the relevant mobile support, while other tablet models depend on their operating system and Bluetooth implementation. If the tablet pairs but a game ignores input, the game may not support controllers on that platform.

Smart TVs
The TV must support Bluetooth controller input and provide a game or cloud-gaming app that accepts it. Xbox Wire’s Samsung TV Gaming Hub example is limited to select regions and describes cloud play for Xbox Game Pass titles. Television menus, supported apps, subscription requirements and available playtime can differ by market.

The announcement describes the Nano as Microsoft’s smallest controller. Its compact size and 3.5-ounce weight are relevant if you want a travel controller or have limited space, but they do not change the compatibility requirements of the host device or game.
Troubleshooting common connection problems
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Confirm that the host is a supported Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Android or Smart TV device and that its software version is eligible.
- Make sure the Nano is in pairing mode rather than merely powered on.
- Move the controller close to the host and retry the host’s Add device process.
- Remove an old XBOX Nano Controller entry from the host’s Bluetooth list if it is present but no longer connects, then pair again.
It pairs, but the game does nothing
- Check that the game explicitly supports controllers on that operating system.
- Open the game’s input settings and select a gamepad or controller profile if one is available.
- Test a second controller-compatible title. If another game works, the first game’s input support is the likely limitation.
Cloud gaming will not start
- Verify the Game Pass requirement for the service you are trying to use.
- Confirm that the device and region are supported and that the title is in the current catalog.
- Check the internet connection. The controller cannot compensate for a service or network requirement that is not met.
The battery is low or the controller will not charge
Use a USB-C charging cable. Microsoft states that the cable is required and sold separately, so it may not be included with the controller. The official product material cited here does not provide a battery-life estimate; avoid treating any unverified runtime figure as an official specification.
Which connection should you use?
- You own an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: use Xbox Wireless, the console connection Microsoft lists for those systems.
- You want to play on a Windows PC: use Bluetooth and verify that each game supports controllers.
- You want phone or tablet gaming: use Bluetooth, but check the device and software version because mobile support is selective.
- You want TV cloud gaming: confirm Bluetooth controller support, the TV app or hub, your region, Game Pass access and internet requirements before relying on the setup.
- You want a controller for travel: the official dimensions—just over 5 inches and 3.5 ounces—make the Nano compact, but remember to pack a USB-C charging cable because Microsoft sells it separately.
The practical answer is therefore straightforward: an Xbox console is optional, not mandatory. Bluetooth makes the XBOX Nano Controller a peripheral for supported PCs, mobile devices, tablets and Smart TVs, while Xbox Wireless serves Xbox consoles. In every case, the host platform, operating-system version, game or cloud service and region determine how much of that support is actually available.
