The IGL calls the setup during freeze time, assigns jobs and timings, tracks the economy, changes the plan when opponents reveal information, and keeps communication useful under pressure. The role also includes opponent preparation, protocol design, trust-building and post-match review. An IGL may lead the round without leading the scoreboard, and calling is often shared with teammates rather than delivered as a one-player monologue.
What an IGL is responsible for
The title means more than saying “go A” or “rotate B.” A professional IGL owns the team’s decision-making process. They establish an initial plan, make sure everyone understands it, collect reports during the round and decide whether the original idea still makes sense. The exact division of labor differs by team, but the core responsibilities are consistent.

| Phase | Typical IGL work | What the team needs |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze time | Choose the round shape, assign roles and timings, confirm the buy and utility priorities | A shared plan that can begin immediately when the round starts |
| Early round | Check whether the opponent’s setup matches the pre-round read | Useful reports without unnecessary voice-channel noise |
| Mid-round | Speed up, slow down, rotate, regroup, hit a site or abandon a weak area | A clear decision before time, positioning or utility disappears |
| End of round | Coordinate the final objective, save decision or recovery attempt | Disciplined execution rather than five isolated fights |
| Between matches | Prepare defaults, study opponents, define vocabulary and review failures | Repeatable systems that improve from map to map |
Valve’s coaching policy describes player responsibilities as “keeping track of the economy, calling plays and mid-round calls, and general situational awareness.” Those phrases capture why the job is both tactical and informational: the IGL is constantly deciding what the team knows, what it can afford and what it can still accomplish.

Choose the strategic shape
Freeze time is when the IGL turns the previous round, the opponent’s tendencies and the team’s current resources into an opening plan. Common shapes include a map-wide default, an early contact play, a utility-heavy execute, a fast rotation, or a save or force-buy plan dictated by the economy. A default is not simply “everyone spread out.” It specifies where players begin, which areas are contested, what information is being sought and what trigger starts the next phase.

Ludvig “Brollan” Brolin called freeze-time calling “really important” in a BLAST.tv interview in 2025, linking it to being a leader whom teammates trust. The practical reason is simple: once the barriers drop, players have limited time to move, gather information and use utility. A vague plan forces everyone to invent a plan simultaneously.
Assign jobs, timings and contingencies
The IGL tells each player where to start, what utility to bring, which duel or support task matters and what happens if the opponent contests the intended area. Timing language can be as important as destination language: one player may make first contact, another may trade, a third may hold a flank and a fourth may keep utility for the late execute. The leader also states the first contingency, such as regrouping after an early loss or switching sites when defenders over-rotate.
These instructions do not eliminate initiative. A specialist may make a local call about a flash, a peek or a smoke while the IGL maintains the broader objective. Good freeze-time communication gives players enough detail to act together without filling the channel with scripts that cannot survive contact with the enemy.

Before committing to a plan, the IGL checks what the team can actually purchase. A rifle-and-full-utility round, a light investment, a save or a force buy creates different tactical possibilities. The leader weighs the immediate chance of winning against the value of preserving weapons and utility for the next round. If a force buy is chosen, the plan must account for its limitations rather than pretending the team has a full buy.
How an IGL makes mid-round calls
Build a live picture from teammate reports
Once the round begins, the IGL compares the expected opponent setup with observed evidence: a defender spotted early, missing utility, a timing that did not happen, damage information, a flank warning or a teammate’s death. No single report is automatically the whole truth. The leader combines several partial observations into a working picture of where opponents can still be.
This is why concise callouts matter. A report should identify a location, number, timing or action that changes a decision. The IGL’s task is not to repeat every sound heard on the map; it is to determine which information justifies a new plan.

Decide whether to keep, alter or abandon the plan
A mid-round call can accelerate a slow default into a site hit, pause an overextended attack, rotate players away from a defended area, regroup for a coordinated execute or abandon a compromised lane. The best choice depends on time, remaining utility, player health, numbers and the opponent’s likely response. The IGL must make the decision early enough for teammates to move and use utility; waiting for certainty can leave the team with no viable option.
Device said he admired karrigan’s ability to change and manipulate rounds mid-game, and described gla1ve as making defaults work while making decisions from the default feel good for everyone, in BLAST.tv interviews from 2024. Those examples illustrate two complementary skills: reacting to new evidence and giving a default enough structure that players can make sensible decisions before a formal call arrives.
Coordinate the order of fights
A call is also about sequencing. The IGL may ask one player to draw attention, another to flash a teammate through a choke point, and a third to arrive late with the objective. Spacing determines whether a first death can be traded; utility timing determines whether an opponent can take a favorable duel; and regrouping determines whether the team enters together or feeds players one at a time. The leader can set this order while allowing a nearby specialist to handle a local detail.
CT-side calling is often distributed
Attacking sides can follow a planned route more visibly, while the defending side must interpret several simultaneous threats. For that reason, CT calling is frequently a team effort rather than a single voice issuing every instruction. Sjuush explained that fixed positions influence how well a player can read the whole map: a defender who sees one area directly may know less about another than a teammate rotating from a different position.
Players therefore report numbers, locations, utility and timings so the IGL can infer the enemy’s setup. A site anchor may call an immediate fight or utility response; a rotator may recognize that a hit is likely; the IGL then connects those local observations into a rotate, stack, retake setup or save decision. Distributed calling does not remove leadership. It gives the leader better inputs and lets the player closest to an event react without waiting for permission.
Economy and situational awareness
Professional calling is constrained by the money on the scoreboard. The IGL tracks whether the team can buy rifles, armor, grenades and the equipment needed for the intended plan. A round that looks strategically attractive may be wrong if losing it leaves the next round unwinnable; conversely, a force buy can be justified when a weak opponent economy, strong positional advantage or urgent match situation makes the risk worthwhile.

Economy management is not a separate spreadsheet task performed after tactics. It changes the tactics themselves. A low-resource round may favor a stack, a close-range fight, a surprise timing or a save plan. A full buy can support layered utility, multiple trade attempts and a late-round contingency. The IGL communicates the financial decision clearly so players do not purchase conflicting equipment or expect utility the team cannot afford.
Situational awareness also includes the clock, player numbers, bomb location, remaining grenades, weapon recoveries and the opponent’s likely objective. An IGL who notices a flank but misses the timer can make the correct read too late. The role is therefore a continuous prioritization problem rather than a sequence of isolated tactical slogans.
Preparation before match day
Study opponents and build usable defaults
IGL work begins before the server. Teams study opponent demos to identify opening positions, preferred timings, utility patterns, rotations and responses to pressure. MSL described studying demos and using that knowledge to anticipate an opponent’s movement in a BLAST.tv interview from 2023. The purpose is not to predict every action perfectly; it is to create informed starting assumptions and recognize deviations quickly.
Those findings become map defaults: repeatable opening structures that place players in useful positions while collecting information. A default can contain several branches, such as a response to an early fight, a way to punish a defender who rotates too soon, or a regroup point if the first probe finds resistance. Device credited previous leaders with making defaults work and emphasized thorough preparation in BLAST.tv interviews from 2024.
Define vocabulary and contingency protocols
Teams agree on names for positions, utility combinations, rotations and emergency plans. Shared vocabulary reduces the number of words needed during a high-pressure round. Protocols also answer predictable questions in advance: who calls a save, who carries a particular grenade, who takes over if the IGL dies, and which player can make a local call in a fixed position.
Coaches can help with preparation and opponent study, but the players must be able to execute the plan without live coaching. Preparation is valuable only when it becomes quick, unambiguous behavior inside the round.

Leadership, communication and trust
An IGL needs authority to make a decision and enough restraint to let teammates provide information. If every teammate is interrupted, useful reports disappear. If nobody accepts a call, the team reaches a different kind of failure: five players pursue individually reasonable ideas that do not fit together.

Trust develops through consistent preparation, clear explanations and accountability after mistakes. Brollan’s comments connect freeze-time calling with being a leader teammates trust. Device said he tries to set an example of what a professional player should be. In practice, that standard includes arriving prepared, keeping the voice channel usable, admitting when a read was wrong and maintaining composure when a round collapses.
The social side affects tactical quality. Players are more likely to report uncomfortable information, follow a difficult rotate or accept a low-percentage save when they believe the decision process is fair and deliberate. Leadership does not mean winning every argument; it means making the team’s next action clear.
IGL versus coach
The two roles cooperate, but they are not interchangeable. The IGL is an active player subject to the normal limits of a round. The coach prepares the team and, under Valve’s policy, has restricted communication during the match: coaching communication is limited to warmup, halftime and permitted timeouts.
| Responsibility | IGL | Coach |
|---|---|---|
| Live round calls | Calls the opening plan and mid-round changes while playing | Cannot continuously direct the team during live play |
| Economy and immediate information | Tracks money, utility, positions and timing in real time | Prepares frameworks but does not replace the player’s live read |
| Opponent preparation | Uses the prepared plan and helps shape its practical branches | Studies opponents and supports strategic preparation |
| Communication windows | Communicates throughout the round | Communicates during warmup, halftime and limited timeouts under policy |
An IGL may work closely with a coach on demos and protocols, but saying “the coach called the round” confuses preparation with in-server responsibility.

Does the IGL call every round?
Usually, the IGL sets the initial plan for every round, but not every decision has to come from one player. A team may distribute responsibility by side, map area or moment. CT defenders often make local calls from fixed positions, and an entry or utility specialist may call the immediate action needed to exploit an opening.

IGL styles can be compared along several useful axes:
| Axis | One end | Other end | What to observe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening structure | Highly structured defaults | Reactive, low-script openings | How much the team knows before contact |
| Decision ownership | Centralized calls | Distributed calls | Who makes local and defensive decisions |
| Tempo | Deliberate, information-first rounds | Aggressive early pressure | How quickly the team forces a response |
| Economy | Conservative preservation | Frequent calculated risks | Whether buys match the team’s long-term plan |
| Information flow | Strict, concise reporting | Broad player-led interpretation | How efficiently reports become action |
| Leadership | Strong central authority | Shared ownership and trust | Whether teammates can act without hesitation |
Neither end of an axis is automatically superior. The right balance depends on the roster’s experience, communication habits, map pool and ability to make local decisions. Kill totals or rating alone cannot show whether an IGL is doing the job well, because calling consumes attention and can improve teammates’ opportunities without appearing as a personal statistic.
A complete example of an IGL decision cycle
- Freeze time: The team has enough money for rifles and a planned utility set. The IGL chooses a default that contests early map control, assigns the first contact and keeps a late smoke for a site execute.
- Initial read: A teammate reports that the expected defender is absent and that an important piece of utility has already been used. The IGL treats this as evidence that the opponent’s normal setup may have changed.
- Adjustment: Instead of continuing the slow default, the IGL calls a regroup and a faster hit while the information advantage is fresh. Players keep their trade order and preserve the utility needed to enter.
- Opponent response: The defenders rotate early. A player reports the movement, and the IGL cancels the first route rather than sending isolated players into a prepared crossfire.
- Commitment: The team switches to the weaker area, uses its flashes and smokes in sequence, and enters with enough spacing for trades.
- Endgame: After losing a player, the IGL compares the clock, bomb position, numbers and remaining utility. The call becomes either a coordinated attempt or a save, not an automatic continuation of the original plan.
This cycle shows why an IGL cannot be reduced to a pre-round script. The value lies in connecting preparation, reports, economy and timing into one decision that all five players can execute.
How to judge an IGL’s performance
Look beyond the scoreboard. Useful qualitative questions include:
- Did the freeze-time plan give every player a clear job and a realistic contingency?
- Did the team’s buys and utility support the intended strategy?
- Were mid-round changes based on new information rather than panic?
- Could teammates report freely while still hearing the decisive call?
- Did the team preserve trade spacing, timing and utility order?
- On defense, did local reports become timely rotates or stacks?
- After a failed round, did review produce a specific protocol or adjustment?
No reliable primary-source statistic establishes a universal percentage of calls, workload or causal value for IGLs. Their impact is therefore best understood through decision quality, information flow, preparation and the team’s ability to act together in changing situations.
