Doug Bowser’s April 2025 comments explained the thinking behind Nintendo’s original Switch 2 price—not its current price. He said tariffs announced that month were not factored into the then-planned $449.99 U.S. price. Nintendo later raised the U.S. MSRP to $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. Its stated reason was changing market conditions and the global business outlook, not tariffs alone.
What Bowser said about the original Switch 2 price
In an April 7, 2025 interview with WIRED, Bowser said tariffs announced on April 2 had “weren’t factored into the pricing” of the console. Nintendo was “actively assessing” the situation; he said, “It creates a challenge,” and “It’s something we’re going to have to address.” Those remarks referred to the original $449.99 U.S. price decision, not the later price revision.

Nintendo had delayed U.S. preorders to assess the effect of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Bowser also said Nintendo had diversified where it manufactured hardware and accessories, and that this flexibility had helped the company shift production during the pandemic and the early tariff period.
How Nintendo framed tariffs and the 2026 increase
Nintendo’s May 2025 investor Q&A said its forecast assumed U.S. tariff rates in effect on April 10, 2025. The company described its general approach as treating tariffs as costs and incorporating them into prices, while prioritizing platform momentum and growth of the new hardware install base during launch. It said it would consider appropriate price adjustments if tariff assumptions changed, taking market conditions into account. Nintendo FY2025 results briefing Q&A summary

In its May 8, 2026 price-revision presentation, Nintendo cited changing market conditions and the global business outlook as factors in a careful review. Why Bowser said game prices vary by title
In an April 7, 2025 interview with The Washington Post, Bowser answered the question of the right price for a software experience by describing a title-by-title judgment rather than a universal benchmark. He said Nintendo considers development effort, the breadth and depth of gameplay, durability over time and repeatability.

Nintendo Support says that, beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 have MSRPs that differ from their physical versions. Nintendo attributes the distinction to format-specific production and distribution costs and says it gives players more choice. Retail partners set their own prices, which can vary by title. This policy applies to eligible new exclusives, not every game or every store listing. Nintendo Support: About Nintendo Switch 2 Game Pricing
Bowser’s role at Nintendo now
Bowser made the 2025 pricing comments while serving as president of Nintendo of America. Nintendo announced his retirement effective December 31, 2025, and named Devon Pritchard to become president effective January 1, 2026. His tariff and pricing remarks should therefore be read as an account of Nintendo’s position at that time, not as a current statement from the company’s president.
