Yamagata Masakage appears in two distinct fights: a human boss in the prologue mission Escape from Hitokoto Slope and a later mounted Yokai encounter in Mikatagahara. In the prologue, bait his attacks, Burst Break when he flashes red, and punish briefly before backing off. In Mikatagahara, prepare Water effects and adjust for his mounted charges and dismounted attacks.
How the two Masakage fights differ
| Encounter | Location and role | Form and pattern | Emphasized tactic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prologue | Escape from Hitokoto Slope | Human boss. One guide calls him a spear-wielding warrior; another describes a large Odachi, so the weapon description is inconsistent. | Read his red-flash Burst Break tell, manage Ki, and punish recovery without overcommitting. PC Gamer; PowerPyx |
| Mikatagahara | On the route through Mikatagahara; defeating him opens the junction gate. | Yokai-possessed cavalry commander who alternates mounted charges and dismounted attacks. | Prepare Water Talismans or a Water-infused weapon to exploit the guide-reported Water weakness and build Saturated status. Beat Masakage in Escape from Hitokoto Slope
Use the red flash for Burst Break
Watch for a circular spin slash followed by a red glow and weapon slam. The prologue walkthrough recommends using Burst Break (R, or RT on controller in that guide) when the red tell appears. A successful Burst Break deals substantial Ki damage, which can leave Masakage vulnerable to a Grapple. The guide also says Burst Break switches between Ninja and Samurai styles. See PC Gamer’s prologue walkthrough for its control notation.

Bait the long combo, then punish its recovery
- Move close enough to trigger Masakage’s long attack sequence, then retreat so it misses. PowerPyx recommends this bait-and-punish approach; AllThings How also advises dodging his charge to either side to get behind him and attack during recovery. PowerPyx; AllThings How
- Once the combo or charge has ended, step in for a short attack. Leave as he recovers: he may resume attacking or start blocking, so a long string can cost you the opening.
- Keep enough Ki to evade the next sequence. PowerPyx advises against engaging when below half Ki; treat that as its recommended safety margin, not a required threshold.
Choose tools that fit your playstyle
PowerPyx suggests fast Ninja-style dual swords for quick Ki damage and Ninjutsu at range. These are optional tactics, not required gear. The central loop remains spacing, a brief recovery punish, and enough Ki left to escape.
Beat the mounted Yokai in Mikatagahara
Prepare for both mounted and dismounted pressure
Nioh3.net describes this version as a Yokai-possessed cavalry commander who alternates mounted charges with attacks on foot. The prologue’s human-boss advice does not fully cover this different form, so adapt your positioning to whether he is mounted or dismounted rather than relying on one unchanged attack pattern.

Use Water effects
The Mikatagahara guide identifies Water as Masakage’s weakness and recommends Water Talismans or a Water-infused weapon to build Saturated status. These are recommendations from that guide, not established as mandatory equipment. Its page labels its information community verified and says it was updated for patch 1.04 on February 25, 2026; mechanics may differ in later game builds. Nioh3.net’s Mikatagahara guide
Defeat him to open the junction gate
The same guide says this encounter is required to open the Mikatagahara junction gate. If you are following that route, the fight is a progression check, not an optional detour.

What to keep in mind
- Confirm which encounter you are in: the prologue human boss and the Mikatagahara mounted Yokai require different preparation.
