For a general survival set, put Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on every piece of Netherite armor. Then add the piece-specific enchantments that match how you play: underwater utility on the helmet, sneaking speed on leggings, and fall or movement utility on boots.

Best all-around Netherite armor enchantments

Use this as a practical survival loadout. The core three enchantments cover broad damage reduction, durability, and repair; the remaining choices add utility to the pieces where they are most useful.

Armor piece Recommended enchantments Optional choice
Helmet Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I Thorns III
Chestplate Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I Thorns III
Leggings Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I, Swift Sneak III Thorns III
Boots Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III Soul Speed III or Frost Walker II; Thorns III is also optional

Why the core enchantments belong on every piece

Protection IV for broad damage coverage

Minecraft Help describes Protection as reducing most types of damage by 4% per level. Protection IV is the general-purpose choice when you do not have a particular threat in mind; that description should not be read as a measured reduction for every damage type. Minecraft Help lists Protection and its maximum level.

Blast Protection, Fire Protection, and Projectile Protection target narrower damage classes. Consider one of those when you deliberately want to specialize for a particular hazard rather than use the broad default. Minecraft Help describes these protection options.

Unbreaking III and Mending I for upkeep

Unbreaking reduces how often an item takes durability damage, while Mending repairs it using experience. Together, they help keep a durable Netherite set in service. These enchantments do not make armor indestructible: Mending still depends on experience being available to repair the equipped item. Minecraft Help describes the enchantment effects.

Useful additions by armor piece

Helmet: breathe and mine underwater

Respiration III extends underwater breathing time. Aqua Affinity I improves underwater mining. Add both when you explore oceans, build underwater, or spend time mining while submerged. Minecraft Help lists their effects and maximum levels.

Leggings: move faster while sneaking

Swift Sneak III increases sneaking speed, making it a useful leggings addition when you often explore cautiously or build while crouched. Minecraft Help lists Swift Sneak and its maximum level.

Boots: reduce fall damage and choose a movement specialty

Feather Falling IV reduces fall damage, while Depth Strider III increases underwater movement speed. They address different situations and make a strong default boot pairing for general survival. Minecraft Help lists both enchantments and their maximum levels.

Soul Speed III is a situational alternative for faster travel over soul sand and soul soil, particularly in the Nether. The tradeoff is durability: Mojang warns that walking on soul blocks slowly degrades boots with Soul Speed. Mojang also notes that Piglin bartering can provide Soul Speed. Mojang’s Nether Update notes describe Soul Speed’s durability cost and how to obtain it.

Frost Walker II is another boot utility choice: it freezes water source blocks beneath you into frosted ice. Choose it when that terrain effect is more useful to you than Depth Strider’s faster underwater movement; they are competing choices for the boots rather than a default combination. Minecraft Help describes Frost Walker and Depth Strider.

Optional enchantments and tradeoffs

Thorns III: retaliation at a durability cost

Thorns reflects some incoming damage onto attackers, but it also costs durability. Add it if you value passive retaliation and are comfortable with the extra wear; it is not essential to the general-purpose set. Minecraft Help notes Thorns’ effect and durability cost.

Choose protection for the threats you actually face

Keep Protection IV for a balanced survival set. A specialized protection enchantment makes sense when you are building around a known kind of damage, but it sacrifices the broad coverage of the default recommendation. Minecraft Help distinguishes Blast, Fire, and Projectile Protection from standard Protection. See the official enchantment descriptions.

What Netherite changes—and what it does not

Mojang describes Netherite armor as having “higher toughness and durability than diamond” and adding knockback resistance. Those material advantages do not replace the functions of enchantments: Protection reduces damage, Unbreaking helps preserve durability, and Mending repairs equipment using experience. Mojang’s Nether Update notes describe Netherite armor.

This recommendation is for general survival play. Edition differences, PvP rules, and server-specific changes can affect the best specialized setup, so tailor the choices if those are your main concern.
