Most PC players need only the launcher or storefront that owns the games they play. Voice chat is optional if a game or platform already connects the group; a separate chat client helps when friends move between games, devices, or communities. Monitoring utilities are optional diagnostic tools, not required parts of a gaming setup.
A useful setup is therefore small: install the software your games require, add cross-game communication only if you need it, and use overlays or telemetry when they solve a specific problem. More software does not automatically mean better performance, and overlays can be incompatible with particular games.

What gaming software do you actually need?
Start with the software needed to access the games you own. Add voice chat if the built-in option does not fit your group, and add monitoring only when you have a performance question to answer. You do not need every storefront, every chat app, or a permanent on-screen display to play PC games.
These tools serve different purposes, so it helps not to treat them as one required bundle. A launcher handles access to a game’s service and often its downloads or updates. A chat app connects people. A driver suite manages graphics-related software and may include recording or an overlay. A monitoring utility records or displays performance data. Some applications combine roles, but the roles remain distinct.

Keep the setup proportional to the problem. If a game launches and performs as expected, there may be no reason to add telemetry. If a friend group already communicates through the game, an extra chat client may add little. If a game requires a particular service, however, a library organizer cannot substitute for the service that authenticates or updates it.
Do you need every game launcher?
No. Install the launcher or storefront required by the games you play; an aggregated library can make games easier to find, but it does not replace the service that owns or manages each game.

Keep the launcher that handles the game
A launcher is not just a shortcut list. It can be the point where a game is authenticated, downloaded, updated, or connected to its ecosystem. If a game depends on a particular storefront or service, keep that service installed even if another app can display the game’s icon in a combined library. Removing the required service can leave the title inaccessible or unable to update.
This is why installing every available storefront “just in case” is usually unnecessary. Add one when a game you want requires it, rather than treating all launchers as prerequisites for PC gaming. A library aggregator is a convenience layer: it may reduce the friction of finding games spread across services, but it should not be mistaken for a replacement account or license manager.
When the Xbox PC app may cover several jobs
The Xbox PC app combines game discovery, downloads and launching, Game Pass browsing, cloud gaming, remote play, library aggregation for games from multiple PC storefronts, and voice and text chat across PC, console, and mobile. That makes it a useful example of one application serving several roles rather than a reason to install unrelated tools.

Xbox lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display among the app’s requirements. Those are requirements for the app, not a blanket guarantee that every game in a library will run on a computer. Individual games have their own requirements; check those for the titles you intend to play.

Think of library aggregation as a way to reduce navigation, not as a promise that every game can be installed or launched without its original service. The useful test is practical: does the app make your library easier to manage while the game still has access to the account and service it needs?
What should you install for voice chat while gaming?
Use in-game or platform chat if it reliably connects the people you play with. Add a separate chat client when your group wants to stay together across different games, devices, or communities.
When built-in chat is enough
For a fixed group playing the same title, in-game voice can be the simplest option: everyone joins the same game session, and there is no separate community or client to manage. Platform chat can also work well when players are already connected through that platform. Xbox documents voice and text chat across PC, console, and mobile, which can suit a group that moves among those devices.
The right choice depends on where the group is organized. If players meet in different games or want a persistent place to talk outside a particular session, a separate client can provide that continuity. If all communication already happens within the game or platform, installing another app may create another account, notification stream, and settings page without solving a real problem.

Keep chat separate from chat overlays
Voice communication and an on-screen indicator showing who is speaking are not the same feature. A chat client may work while a particular visual notification or overlay does not. Treat overlay functions as optional conveniences and check compatibility for the specific game rather than assuming that support for voice chat means every chat feature is supported.
How do you monitor FPS, temperature, and other performance data?
Choose a tool based on the question you are trying to answer. NVIDIA FrameView is for measuring and logging performance data, NVIDIA App combines graphics-related management features, and MSI Afterburner provides monitoring and GPU-tuning controls. These are optional utilities; use them when troubleshooting or tuning, not simply because a gaming PC can run them.

Use measurements to answer a specific question
Monitoring is most useful when you can connect a measurement to a symptom. If a game stutters, frame-rate and frame-time readings can help distinguish a steady average from inconsistent delivery. If performance drops during a session, temperature and power information may help you investigate thermal or power behavior. If a tuned system crashes or behaves erratically, monitoring can help you examine stability while you troubleshoot.
Those readings are evidence to interpret, not automatic diagnoses. A number on an overlay does not by itself explain the cause of a hitch or prove that a component is faulty. Compare what the tool records with when the problem happens, and change one relevant setting at a time if you are troubleshooting. If the game runs well and you have no need for telemetry, leave monitoring utilities and their overlays off.

An overlay puts selected information on top of a running game; a log records measurements for review. An overlay is convenient for seeing what is happening live, but it can be distracting and may be incompatible with a game. A log can be more useful when you want to inspect behavior over a period rather than watch a number in the corner of the screen. FrameView documents both configurable overlays and log files, so the choice need not be either “always show data” or “measure nothing.”

With Afterburner, the on-screen display has a specific dependency: MSI’s support guide says RivaTuner Statistics Server must be installed for in-game monitoring data. That requirement concerns the in-game display, not a reason to install a monitoring tool if you do not intend to use it.
Can overlays or Discord get blocked by anti-cheat?
They can be incompatible in a particular game, but that does not establish a universal ban on chat or monitoring software. Check the game’s own compatibility guidance and disable a documented-incompatible overlay or notification feature.
Destiny 2 is a concrete, game-specific example. Bungie’s support guidance says Discord or Mumble “Who’s talking” and visual notification features are not compatible with Destiny 2. It also names framerate or statistics overlays from EVGA Precision XOC, MSI Afterburner, and Fraps as examples of incompatible features. This is guidance for Destiny 2, not evidence that every game blocks those applications or that Discord voice chat itself is universally prohibited.
Compatibility can depend on the feature being used. A voice channel may serve its purpose even if its speaker indicator cannot appear in a game. Similarly, a monitoring program may have features beyond its on-screen overlay. When a game documents a conflict, turn off the specific feature it identifies and follow the game’s current support rules; do not assume that changing a setting makes an expressly unsupported feature acceptable.
- Look up the game’s own support or anti-cheat guidance before relying on an overlay.
- Distinguish the underlying app from its overlay, notification, or in-game display feature.
- If a game names a feature as incompatible, disable it for that game rather than treating compatibility in another title as proof.
- If you do not need live telemetry, leaving overlays off is the simplest way to avoid unnecessary overlay conflicts.
How can you download gaming utilities safely?
Use the publisher’s legitimate download route for a utility, and be especially careful with Afterburner: MSI warns that fake sites may distribute phishing pages or modified installers and identifies MSI and Guru3D as legitimate download locations.

Search results and lookalike download pages can make a utility appear to come from an official source when it does not. Before downloading, verify that the page is one of the legitimate locations MSI names. Avoid installers from unrelated download mirrors or pages that imitate the product name. This matters because a modified installer can pose a security risk, not just install the wrong version.
After installation, add only the features you plan to use. A utility that offers tuning, fan controls, and an in-game display does not require you to enable every function. For a basic performance check, readings or logs may be enough; overclocking and fan-control changes are separate choices that should be made deliberately.

- Check compatibility before enabling an overlay. Follow the specific game’s support guidance, and turn off a documented-incompatible display or notification feature.
- Keep the setup understandable. Know which app launches the game, which app connects the group, and which app displays or records measurements. This makes troubleshooting easier because each tool has a clear purpose.
The point is not to minimize software at all costs. It is to avoid installing overlapping utilities without a reason, while keeping the services needed for game access and the tools that genuinely help your play.
