What Happens If Dijkstra Becomes King? A Grounded Alternate-History Scenario

Edsger W. Dijkstra was a Dutch computer scientist, not a monarch. Here’s how to build a king-Dijkstra scenario while keeping the history and invention distinct.

If Edsger W. Dijkstra became king, the result would depend less on his computer-science legacy than on how much power the fictional crown held. The historical record identifies Dijkstra as a Dutch computer scientist and mathematician—not a monarch or political ruler. A story can plausibly borrow themes from his work, such as correctness and careful design, but any laws, reforms, or royal decisions would be invention.

Which Dijkstra does this premise mean?

This article takes “Dijkstra” to mean Edsger W. Dijkstra (1930–2002), the Dutch computer scientist and mathematician. The IEEE Computer Society’s Computer Pioneers entry describes contributions across graph algorithms and programming. The U.S. National Science Foundation reproduces the official citation for the 1972 ACM Turing Award, recognizing his contributions to programming and program design: NSF awardee page.

CWI’s institutional history says Dijkstra worked at Mathematisch Centrum from 1952 to 1962 and recounts his development there of the shortest-path algorithm associated with his name: CWI history. Those are biographical and professional facts. The sources do not establish that he became king, describe a political program, or show how he would have governed.

What would change if he became king?

That depends on the fictional monarchy. If the king is mainly a symbolic head of state, Dijkstra’s role might be public and ceremonial, while elected officials make policy. If the story gives him executive authority, he could directly influence government. Those are alternative story setups, not claims about Dutch constitutional arrangements or Dijkstra’s preferences.

A symbolic crown

In this version, the most credible consequence is a change in the monarchy’s public voice rather than a sudden overhaul of government. A writer might imagine Dijkstra urging officials to explain decisions clearly and check whether systems work as intended. That is a creative translation of his professional concerns, not a documented political position.

An executive crown

If the premise grants him direct governing power, the plot could explore a ruler trying to make administration more systematic: defining procedures, identifying errors, and revising flawed processes. But technical rigor does not determine political goals. Decisions about rights, budgets, representation, and acceptable trade-offs require values and public accountability; an algorithm cannot settle them by itself.

How can his computing legacy shape the story without rewriting history?

Dijkstra’s 1972 Turing Award citation praised his insistence that programs should be composed correctly rather than merely debugged into correctness. The citation is reproduced by the National Science Foundation. A writer can use that emphasis as a motif: a fictional king might prefer rules designed to prevent failures over emergency fixes after harm occurs.

That motif should remain an analogy. Dijkstra’s work on programming and graph algorithms does not prove that he favored technocratic rule, centralized authority, or any specific laws. His lecture “The Humble Programmer” is available in the University of Texas at Austin archive as a primary source for readers who want to encounter his own words.

What makes the premise compelling for a game or story?

The strongest conflict is not “a computer scientist fixes politics.” It is the gap between a system that can be specified and tested and a society whose members may disagree about what is fair. A story could place procedural consistency against human consequences, or set a king’s desire for orderly administration against democratic scrutiny. These tensions are fictional possibilities, not predictions about Dijkstra.

  • Keep the documented biography distinct: identify Dijkstra as a Dutch computer scientist and mathematician, and anchor his career and award in institutional sources.
  • Label the divergence: once the story gives him a crown, political authority, policies, court scenes, and public reactions are alternate-history inventions.
  • Make accountability part of the plot: a well-designed procedure can still serve a disputed goal, so characters should question who chose the rules and who can challenge them.
