On the reset or replacement PC, sign in to the Microsoft Store and Xbox app with the same account, find the title in your library, and install it again instead of buying it a second time.
Whether you can play the title on both Xbox and PC depends on its entitlement. Xbox Play Anywhere provides the clearest cross-device rights, while Game Pass access can end when a title leaves the catalog. Your saved progress is a separate question: supported cloud-save games can synchronize, but a save stored only on the old installation may not be recoverable automatically.

What a Windows 11 reset removes
Resetting Windows 11 changes the computer’s local software state. The installed Xbox app, Microsoft Store games, downloaded files, patches, mods, and any other data stored only on the old Windows installation are removed as part of the reset process. A replacement PC starts with the same situation because it has no copy of the old installation.
The digital entitlement is different from those local files. A game redeemed or purchased through Microsoft is associated with the Microsoft/Xbox account used for that transaction. A reset does not normally cancel that account record. The practical consequence is that you download the game again; you do not restore the old installation image.

Reinstall a claimed game on the reset or replacement PC
- Identify the account first. Sign in to Windows, the Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app with the exact Microsoft account that redeemed or purchased the title. A different email address, family account, or gamertag can produce an apparently empty library even when the game was never lost.
- Open your library or search for the title. Use the Xbox app or Microsoft Store and select the game’s install or download control. A digital purchase should present an installation option rather than a new charge when you are using the owning account.
- Install the PC version. Check that the listing identifies a Windows PC version and that the computer meets the title’s compatibility requirements. Allow the download, updates, and any required Xbox components to finish before launching.
- Do not repurchase while troubleshooting. If the listing shows a price instead of Install, stop and verify the account and entitlement. Buying again can create a second transaction without solving an account, region, or platform mismatch.
- Allow synchronization at first launch. For games with supported cloud saves, leave the Xbox app and game connected while the save data is checked. Starting a new game before synchronization completes can make it harder to tell whether the old progress is available.
Microsoft describes Xbox and Windows Store purchases as digital downloads that can be downloaded, installed, and reinstalled. The exact library layout can change, but the account-and-reinstall principle remains the same.
Determine what kind of access you had
“Claimed” can describe several different relationships with a game. The entitlement type determines what survives a reset and what you should expect to see on a new PC.

A promotion redeemed into your Microsoft account is treated like an account claim, but the product page still controls whether a compatible PC build exists. Keep the original redemption email or order record if you need to establish which account was used.

Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest indicator that a digital Xbox purchase includes the Windows PC version. Xbox states that a digital game supporting Play Anywhere can be played on Xbox consoles, Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs, and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Signing in to the Xbox/Microsoft account makes that game available to download.

That designation is title-specific. A game can be digitally owned on an Xbox account yet lack Play Anywhere rights. In that case, the console entitlement does not by itself promise a PC copy; the publisher may sell a separate PC edition, or the title may be console-only. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere label on the current store listing before assuming that a replacement PC is covered.
Play Anywhere also gives supported games the most consistent basis for cross-progression. It does not mean every game on Xbox automatically shares saves, nor does it apply to purchases made in an unrelated storefront.
Will your saves transfer?
Installation and saved progress are separate. Microsoft developer documentation describes cloud game saves and cross-progression for supported Play Anywhere titles, using a shared title identity so play can continue across console and PC screens. When a game implements that system and you sign in to the same account, the replacement PC can download the cloud copy after installation.
Not every title has that support. A local-only save can exist only on the old Windows installation. If the reset has already erased it and no developer or Windows backup exists, reinstalling the game restores the software but not necessarily the progress. A game may also synchronize only between particular platforms, so verify the title’s own listing or support information rather than assuming universal cross-save behavior.

If the old PC still works
- Start the game while connected to the internet and wait for its normal save or cloud-sync operation to finish.
- Close the game normally before resetting; an interrupted session may not have uploaded its latest progress.
- Back up any save files that the developer identifies as local. Cloud synchronization and a manual backup protect against different failure modes.
- Record the account and storefront used by the game so you can reproduce the same sign-in on the new installation.
If the old PC has already been reset
Install the title, sign in to the original account, and wait for any cloud-save synchronization before creating a new save. If no cloud data appears, check whether the game supports cross-progression and whether a developer backup exists. Without a compatible cloud save or backup, local progress may have been stored only on the erased installation.
What to check when the game is missing
1. Eliminate an account mismatch
Compare the email address, Microsoft account profile, and Xbox gamertag used on the old PC with the credentials currently signed in. The Microsoft Store and Xbox app should both use the account that made the purchase or redemption. A Windows login can be different from the account that owns a game, so check both apps rather than assuming the Windows username proves ownership.
2. Review transaction or redemption history
Use the account’s order history or redemption history to confirm that the transaction completed and identify the account that received it. If the record belongs to another account, sign out and use that account; entitlements are not moved merely because two accounts are used on the same computer.
3. Confirm PC availability, region, and edition
Search the current product listing and check that it offers a Windows PC edition in your region. Device compatibility and regional availability can change what appears in a library. A console-only listing, a delisted product, or a version restricted in your region may not show an install control on the replacement PC even though another edition exists elsewhere.

4. Repair the delivery apps
Update the Xbox app and Microsoft Store. If Windows 11 exposes Repair or Reset controls for either app under Settings, Apps, and Installed apps, use Repair first, restart the app, and sign in again. These steps refresh the local delivery software; they do not create ownership for an account that never held the entitlement.
5. Check subscription status
If the game came through Game Pass, confirm that the subscription is active and that the title is still in the catalog. A Game Pass listing can disappear because the catalog changed, not because the reset deleted your account. Purchasing the game creates a separate ownership entitlement, but do not assume a subscription claim became a permanent purchase.

Owned Play Anywhere game
You bought a digital title marked Xbox Play Anywhere, reset the old PC, and replace it with a compatible Windows 11 machine. Sign in to the same Microsoft/Xbox account, install the Windows version, and let cloud saves synchronize if the game supports them. No second purchase is required for the Play Anywhere entitlement.
Console purchase without Play Anywhere
You own a digital Xbox game but its listing does not carry the Play Anywhere designation. The Xbox entitlement remains on the account, yet the PC version may be unavailable or may require a separate purchase. The reset did not remove the console game; it simply cannot create PC rights that were not included with that title.

Game Pass installation
You installed a game through Game Pass and then reset Windows. Reinstall it while the subscription is active and the title remains listed. If it has left the catalog, the install may no longer be offered; that is a catalog and licensing change rather than loss of a permanent purchase.
Game bought elsewhere
You purchased the PC edition through Steam, Epic, or a publisher launcher and merely used the Xbox app for another title. Reinstall the original storefront’s launcher and sign in to its account. The Xbox account’s library is not a universal record of every PC game installed on the machine.
Before resetting Windows 11
- Write down the Microsoft account email and Xbox gamertag that own or redeemed each Xbox PC title.
- Open each important game while the old installation is online and allow cloud synchronization to finish.
- Identify whether each title is an owned purchase, redeemed promotion, Play Anywhere game, Game Pass installation, or another storefront purchase.
- Back up local save files when the developer supports or documents that method.
- Keep order, redemption, and subscription records so an account mismatch can be resolved after the reset.
The practical rule
Think of a reset as deleting a local copy, not revoking a server-side account entitlement. Reinstall from the same Microsoft/Xbox account, use the Play Anywhere label to judge Xbox-to-PC rights, and treat cloud-save support as a separate title-level feature. If a game is absent, verify account, storefront, PC availability, region, and Game Pass status before spending money again.
