If a closure eventually happens, a digital game you bought would not become transferable property: Sony defines it as a personal, account-bound licence. A game that is already installed on your activated PS5 and covered by Console Sharing and Offline Play can currently run without an internet connection, but Sony has not promised that every PS5 licence will remain playable, downloadable or authenticated forever.
The practical risk is not one single switch. A storefront can stop new sales while leaving redownloads available, retire redownloads later, keep installed games working but remove DLC, or shut down a game’s online servers separately. Your purchasing account, console activation, installed files, patches, add-ons and any linked third-party account can all affect the result.

What you actually get when you buy a PS5 digital game
Sony’s March 2026 Terms of Service and User Agreement describe a digital purchase as “a personal licence to use Digital Products for private use.” The licence is not transferable unless local law requires otherwise, and Sony explicitly says that you may use the product in the ways permitted by the licence but “you do not own the Digital Product.”

That distinction matters during a shutdown. The account that made the purchase is part of the access path. Sony warns that deleting, closing or suspending that account can cause you to lose access to its digital products. A game can also depend on a separate account from its publisher or another service. Keeping a downloaded copy does not turn the licence into an unrestricted, account-free file.

Licence versus ownership
- Licence: permission tied to your PlayStation Network account and the terms in force for that product.
- No normal resale right: the licence is not transferable under Sony’s terms, subject to rights granted by applicable local law.
- Account dependency: losing the purchasing account, or a required linked account, can block access even if the game data remains on the console.
- Service dependency: downloading, checking a licence, receiving patches, accessing DLC and connecting to game servers are separate functions.
Will downloaded games work offline?
Today, Sony supports offline play on PS5 through Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony’s support guide says this setting is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in. When it is enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play purchased and downloaded games and use downloaded media while the console is offline.
It can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time. Activation links the console to the account for access to PlayStation Store purchases. Sony lists one PS5 activation per account and provides remote deactivation of devices, but the remote-all-devices action is limited to once every six months.
How to prepare the PS5 you want to use offline
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that bought the games.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable on the console you intend to keep as your offline system. If the setting is enabled on another PS5, that console must be disabled first, either directly or through Sony’s device-management tools.
- Download the games you care about while the Store and account services are available.
- Start each important game once with the console online, then test it after switching the PS5 to offline mode. A padlock icon indicates a licence or network problem rather than proof that the game files are damaged.
This is the strongest preparation supported by Sony today, not a guarantee about a future closure. Sony could change authentication requirements or the way a particular title checks its licence.

What a future PlayStation Store shutdown could change
“The Store is closed” can describe several different decisions. Sony has not published a PS5 shutdown policy that settles these questions in advance.

What Sony’s PS3 and PS Vita closure tells us—and does not tell us
Sony’s official PS3/PS Vita announcement is a precedent, not a contractual promise for PS5. In that notice, Sony said the affected stores would close to new purchases while players would still be able to download previously purchased content “after the closing date for the foreseeable future.”
The timetable was market-specific: PS3 closures were scheduled to begin in August 2026 in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern markets later in 2026; PS3 and PS Vita closures in other countries were scheduled for July 2027. The dates and wording apply to those platforms and regions only.

Sony’s related notices also show that retirement can be partial. Existing PS3/PS Vita purchases and PlayStation Plus content remained accessible and downloadable in the cited notice, while individual applications, online features and servers could be discontinued separately. Nothing in those notices guarantees the same treatment for PS5 licences, redownloads or authentication.
What to do before any shutdown is announced
- Protect the purchasing account. Keep its email address, password, two-step verification method and recovery information current. Do not delete, close or intentionally abandon the account that owns the licences.
- Choose one offline PS5. Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the console that should continue running downloaded games. Remember that one account can have only one PS5 with this setting enabled at a time.
- Install important games. An installed copy avoids dependence on a future redownload endpoint. It does not override a later licence or authentication decision, so installation is risk reduction rather than a guarantee.
- Apply available patches. Download updates while they are offered. Keep in mind that a patch can be required for a particular game mode, and future patches may no longer be published.
- Back up saves and permitted local data. Use the PS5’s supported backup options and retain local saves where the game allows it. A save backup cannot recreate a missing licence or server-side entitlement.
- Inventory add-ons. Record which expansions, season passes and downloadable items you use, then install what you are entitled to while their endpoints operate. Base-game installation does not ensure that every add-on can later be recovered.
- Check account links. Note any publisher or platform account required by the title. Sony’s Store status cannot keep a separate account alive.
- Test offline launch. Disconnect the console from the internet and start the installed games. Resolve any padlock or activation issue while account and activation services are still available.
Common situations and the likely impact
The game is installed and Console Sharing is enabled
That is the best-supported offline position under Sony’s current PS5 guidance. You can play purchased and downloaded games offline on the enabled console today. A future Store closure could still alter licence checks, and online modes or linked accounts may fail independently.
The game was purchased but deleted
You currently depend on Sony’s redownload service to retrieve it. A shutdown plan would need to state whether previously purchased downloads remain available and for how long. Sony has not made a perpetual PS5 redownload commitment.

You own a disc version
A physical disc reduces dependence on a Store redownload for the base installation and offers portability that an account-bound licence does not. It does not guarantee patches, downloadable expansions, online servers or compatibility with replacement hardware. If the disc release itself requires a network entitlement, that requirement remains.
The title is mainly online
Store access and game-server access are different. Even if the game remains downloadable and its licence validates, multiplayer, events, matchmaking, leaderboards or cloud-connected features can stop when the publisher retires the servers.

Access to a subscription catalogue or monthly entitlement is not the same as purchasing a permanent licence. Eligibility can depend on an active subscription and the terms of that offering. Sony’s PS3/PS Vita notices preserved cited PlayStation Plus content for those platforms, but that platform-specific notice does not establish a PS5 rule.

Troubleshooting a padlock or offline launch failure
- Confirm the purchasing account: sign in with the account that bought the game; another household account may not own the entitlement.
- Check Console Sharing and Offline Play: verify that it is enabled on this PS5, not another console.
- Restore licences while online: use the PS5 account settings option to restore licences, then restart the console and test again.
- Check the account status: a suspended, closed or inaccessible purchasing account can prevent access even when the game is installed.
- Separate local and online problems: if the campaign launches but multiplayer fails, the issue may be the game’s servers or a third-party login rather than the Store licence.
- Do not deactivate casually: Sony limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months, so changing consoles at the wrong time can leave the intended offline PS5 without activation.
The practical answer to the headline questions
Will I still be able to play my digital PS5 games if the PlayStation Store closes?
Possibly, especially when the game is installed and Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the intended PS5. Sony has not promised that every title will continue to launch after a future closure.
Can I redownload PS5 games I already bought?
Only if Sony keeps the relevant redownload service available. The PS3/PS Vita precedent allowed downloads for the foreseeable future after store closures, but Sony has announced no equivalent PS5 guarantee.
Do I own a PS5 digital game?
