Installation is not ownership: Xbox checks whether your account currently has a valid Game Pass license for each title. If the subscription has ended—or the game has left the catalog—the license check fails and the game becomes unplayable until you renew, buy that game, or use a supported physical copy.
Your save data is a separate issue. For participating Xbox Play Anywhere games, progress is associated with your gamertag and can be available again when you renew or purchase the game. Save behavior can differ for titles that do not use the relevant Xbox save system.

The short answer: the files remain, but access expires
Game Pass downloads are local game files, not permanent ownership licenses. When your paid Game Pass period ends, Xbox can leave those files on the console or Windows PC, but the subscription entitlement that authorizes play is no longer valid. Starting the game then produces a licensing or subscription-access failure rather than allowing you to continue playing indefinitely.

This distinction explains why a large download can remain visible in your library even though the game no longer starts. Deleting and reinstalling the title does not turn it into a purchased copy; the account still needs an active entitlement.

- Installed files: generally remain on the console or PC until you remove them.
- Play access: ends when the subscription expires or when the title leaves the Game Pass catalog.
- Save data: may remain associated with your account and become usable again after you regain a license.
- Ownership: exists only if you separately purchased the game or own a supported disc.
The Xbox FAQ describes access as lasting until you cancel or the subscription expires, or until a game leaves the library. Catalog titles and features can also differ by plan, region, platform and time, so the exact result depends on the entitlement shown for your account.
Cancellation is not the same as immediate expiration
Turning off recurring billing stops the next automatic charge; it does not normally terminate the current paid period. Your Game Pass access continues until the end date already covered by your payment. The license check changes after that date, not merely when you switch off renewal.
If you turn off recurring billing
- Open your Microsoft account subscription settings and disable recurring billing.
- Check the displayed end date for the current paid period.
- Continue using included games and benefits until that date.
- After the period ends, expect subscription-only games to require renewal or a separate purchase.
If a payment fails or the term expires
Once the account no longer has an active entitlement, the downloaded files do not override the license decision. A game can remain listed as installed while refusing to launch. Renewing the subscription restores the subscription entitlement if the title is still included in your plan and region.

Expiration generally does not automatically remove every Game Pass installation. The files can remain in storage, which means you may not need to download the entire game again if you later renew or purchase it. Keeping the files is only a storage convenience; it does not grant continued play rights.

You can uninstall an expired title to reclaim storage, or leave it installed if you expect to regain access. If the game has left the catalog, however, renewing Game Pass will not necessarily make that particular installation playable. Catalog membership is a separate condition from whether the files are present.
Why an installed game can show a lock or launch error
The console or PC can read the local files but still require a valid digital license. A subscription download is authorized through the account’s entitlement, while a separately purchased copy uses a purchase license. When the subscription entitlement is absent, the installation and the right to launch it no longer match.
What happens to save data
Save files are not the same as the Game Pass license. For participating Xbox Play Anywhere games, Microsoft says: “When you play an XBOX Play Anywhere game, your game progress is saved on with your gamertag so you can pick up where you left on when you log into another device.” That account-linked progress can let you resume after renewing Game Pass or buying the game, provided you sign in with the same gamertag and the title still supports the applicable save system.
Xbox automatic cloud saves can also make progress recoverable when you return later. This is why an expired subscription does not automatically mean that your campaign, character or achievements have been erased. The important distinction is that the save can remain available even while the game itself is temporarily locked.

Conditions that matter
- Use the same account: Play Anywhere progress is associated with the gamertag that played the game.
- Check Play Anywhere support: the cross-device behavior applies only to participating games.
- Allow for different save systems: titles that do not use the relevant Xbox save and cloud features may behave differently.
- Do not overwrite local data unnecessarily: if you plan to return, avoid deleting saves while troubleshooting the license.
How to regain access to a downloaded game
Option 1: Renew Game Pass
Renewing is the direct route when you want the broader catalog rather than one title. After the subscription becomes active, the game must still be included in the plan available to your account, in your region and on your platform. A title that has left the catalog will remain unavailable through that subscription even if its files are still installed.
Option 2: Buy the game digitally
You can purchase the title through the Microsoft Store. The purchase changes the entitlement from subscription access to a permanent digital license for the account. Microsoft-hosted guidance explains the distinction this way: “If you bought the game on GamePass (aka went to the game’s store page and bought it there) then you do not need to buy it again. If you are simply downloading the game from GP then you’re renting it and once the subscription ends the game no longer works.” The quotation is community-authored Microsoft Q&A guidance, so treat the store receipt and account purchase history as the decisive evidence for your copy.
If the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere and you buy the compatible digital version with the same account, the associated progress can be available on the supported Xbox and Windows devices.
Option 3: Use a physical disc
On consoles that support the disc version, owning the physical copy is another route to a game license. The disc acts as the ownership proof while it is inserted. This does not preserve subscription-only benefits, and it is not an option for a Windows PC installation that has no compatible disc drive or console license.

Buying later: can you keep your progress?
Usually, the important step is to launch the purchased version while signed in to the same gamertag that created the save. For Play Anywhere titles, Microsoft explicitly ties progress to that gamertag, allowing supported progress to follow you between compatible Xbox and Windows devices. Automatic cloud saves can likewise make a return possible after a gap in access.
There are limits. Play Anywhere is not universal, and save behavior for games outside the relevant Xbox save system can vary. A different account, a different edition with incompatible saves, or a game-specific storage design can prevent the expected resume. Before deleting an expired installation, verify which account owns the save and whether the game advertises Play Anywhere support.
If the game leaves Game Pass before your subscription ends
Catalog removal is a separate access-ending event. Your subscription may still be active, yet the departing title can stop working once its Game Pass availability ends. The local files may remain, but the subscription entitlement for that title is no longer supplied.
When a title is scheduled to leave, your practical choices are to buy it, use a supported physical copy, or finish playing before removal. Renewing an already active subscription does not bring back a title that is no longer in the catalog.

Plan, region and platform differences
There is no single catalog shared identically by every subscriber. The Xbox FAQ notes that titles, features and availability vary by plan, region and platform. Check the listing attached to your account rather than relying on a friend’s library or an older screenshot.
- A game included in one Game Pass plan may not be included in another.
- A title can be available on console but not Windows, or vice versa.
- Regional catalog changes can alter whether renewal restores a particular download.
- Play Anywhere and cross-device saves apply only to participating games.
What happens to Ultimate-only benefits
Ending Game Pass Ultimate affects more than installed games. While the subscription is inactive, subscription-linked benefits such as cloud gaming, perks and included partner services are also removed. Buying one game separately does not recreate those subscription benefits; it supplies the entitlement for that purchased title.
Renewing versus buying the game
Choose based on how long you expect to play, whether you want access to other games, and which services matter to you. The relevant differences are qualitative because the store price and subscription price depend on the offer, region and date shown to your account.

A checklist before your subscription ends
- Record the end date: turning off recurring billing preserves access only through the paid period.
- Check the game’s current catalog status: confirm it is still included in your specific plan, region and platform.
- Confirm the account: note the gamertag that holds your saves and any digital purchases.
- Check Play Anywhere support: this determines whether supported progress can move between Xbox and Windows.
- Decide whether to renew or buy: renewal keeps broader catalog access; purchase provides an individual ownership license.
- Protect your storage choice: leave the installation in place for a possible return, or uninstall it if storage is more important.
Troubleshooting after expiration
The game is installed but will not start
Verify that the subscription is active or that the game was purchased by the signed-in account. If neither is true, the behavior is expected: the installation does not replace the required license.
I renewed, but the game is still locked
Check that the title remains in the current catalog and that the renewed plan covers the device you are using. Also confirm that you are signed in to the account that holds the subscription.
I bought the game, but my old progress is missing
Sign in with the gamertag that created the original save and verify whether the title supports Play Anywhere or the relevant Xbox cloud-save behavior. Games outside those systems can require different handling.
The game disappeared from the catalog
Renewal alone may not restore it. A digital purchase or supported physical copy is required if you want to keep playing after catalog removal.
