The store may stop new purchases while keeping existing downloads available, remove a title from sale but leave it in your library, or become irrelevant to a game that still depends on a publisher server or launcher. In the worst case, an always-online game can stop working entirely.
The most effective precaution is to download every game you care about, update it, launch it once, test its offline mode, and keep the files or installers on an external hard drive for game backups. That preserves data, not a guarantee of permanent access: account checks, revocable licenses, external launchers and live servers can still be required.

Four different events are often confused
“The store closed” can describe several technically different events. Identifying which one occurred tells you what, if anything, remains playable.

The storefront stops accepting new purchases
A platform can disable checkout while continuing to host previously purchased games. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops stopped accepting new purchases on March 27, 2023. Nintendo said buyers could redownload previously purchased titles “for the foreseeable future,” but free content, including demos, was no longer downloadable. “For the foreseeable future” is not a fixed permanent term, so a buyer should not treat it as a lifetime guarantee.

A game is delisted but remains in existing libraries
Delisting removes a title from public sale and search results. It does not necessarily erase licenses already attached to customer accounts. Steam’s retirement guidance says retired games remain in players’ Steam libraries and that those players can continue to download, install and launch them. This is a platform policy, not proof that every retired title is self-contained. A game can remain visible in a library yet require an external launcher, an authentication check or a publisher server.
A game’s online service is shut down
A storefront handles discovery, purchasing, downloads and entitlement delivery. A game server may handle multiplayer, login authentication, cloud saves, leaderboards, social features or live content. Either can be closed independently. When a server is withdrawn, the downloadable files may remain while online modes disappear; a game that performs a mandatory server check may fail to start at all.
A license or entitlement is revoked
Removing a product from sale is different from removing an individual’s access. A publisher or platform can disable an entitlement under its terms, for example after a transaction reversal or account action. A local copy cannot recreate a revoked account license. Whether a company may do this, and what remedy is available, depends on the contract and the consumer law in the buyer’s jurisdiction.

| Situation | Likely result | What determines the result |
|---|---|---|
| Store stops new sales | Existing downloads may continue | The platform’s redownload policy and the title’s technical dependencies |
| Game is delisted | It may stay in your library and remain installable | Account entitlement, platform policy and whether files are still hosted |
| Publisher server closes | Multiplayer or online features end; some games lose all functionality | Whether the game has a workable single-player or offline mode |
| External launcher is retired | Games tied to that launcher may stop authenticating | Replacement activation method, if any, and the publisher’s support policy |
| License is revoked | Downloaded files may no longer launch | Account status, platform terms and applicable consumer law |
Offline play depends on the game, not just the downloaded files
A complete download proves only that the data is on your drive. At launch, software can still check a store client, a publisher account, a digital-rights-management service or a live game server.

Offline-capable games
A game designed to run locally, with no mandatory authentication after installation, has the best chance of surviving a storefront change. You should still perform an offline launch test before access becomes uncertain. Some titles require a first-run setup, a license cache or a final update; completing those steps while the service is available prevents a later surprise.
Games with client or launcher checks
A title may be installed on your computer but require the storefront client or an external launcher to validate ownership. Steam’s support instructions say to launch Steam while online, ensure the game is fully updated, start each game to confirm it has no further update or installation requirement, and then switch Steam to Offline Mode. Features that require a connection will be unavailable. If Steam asks for a login, its support guidance says there is no bypass for that condition.
Always-online games
In an always-online design, the server is part of the game rather than an optional feature. Downloading an installer or copying the game directory cannot reproduce matchmaking, world-state data, authentication or server-side progression. When the operator closes the required service, the game may become completely unplayable unless the publisher releases an offline conversion or replacement server.

Games with optional online features
Some games retain a substantial single-player mode after multiplayer, leaderboards or cloud functions disappear. Read the title’s support notice and test the exact modes you use. A game that launches offline may still lose saved-data synchronization, downloadable events or cooperative content.

Steam, Nintendo and Ubisoft show why outcomes vary
Steam retired titles
Steam’s published retirement guidance says a retired game remains in existing players’ libraries and can continue to be downloaded, installed and launched. The same guidance asks publishers to communicate changes and gives special attention to titles that rely on hosted servers. For free-to-play retirements, Steam asks publishers to provide 90 days of notice. That is platform guidance for a particular class of retirement, not a universal notice period or a legal requirement for every game.
Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops
The March 27, 2023 purchase cutoff demonstrates a “closed for buying, still available for prior purchases” model. Nintendo’s support language allowed redownloads of previously purchased games for the foreseeable future, while free downloads such as demos ended. A buyer who never downloaded a title should therefore keep checking the platform’s current redownload instructions rather than assume the entitlement will remain available indefinitely.
Ubisoft online-service decommissioning
Ubisoft’s 2022 notice for older PC games illustrates title-by-title treatment. The company cited obsolete technology and potential crashes or security problems. For several games, it planned to make single-player downloadable content available for download and keep before the deadline. Anno 2070 was scheduled to receive an update replacing its old online services. The notice first referenced September 1, 2022, then moved the decommission date to October 1, 2022. A changed timetable is a reminder to follow the current title-specific announcement instead of relying on an old calendar date.
How to prepare before a storefront or service closes
- List the games you would genuinely want to keep. Include delisted titles, expansions, bonus files and games that are difficult to replace. Prioritize anything that is already absent from public sale.
- Download each title while your account still works. Do not assume a future redownload window will be permanent. For a platform promising access only “for the foreseeable future,” treat the phrase as an opportunity to act, not as a dated guarantee.
- Install every available update. Steam specifically advises making sure files are fully updated before switching offline. A missing patch can contain the last required activation component or a fix for a launch failure.
- Launch the game online once. Complete first-run setup, sign in to any required launcher and allow license data to cache. Start the modes you care about so you know they work before the service changes.
- Test a clean offline start. Disconnect the network or use the platform’s offline mode, then start the game and load a save. Record whether the game reaches its main menu, whether local saves load and which features disappear.
- Save installers and local files separately. Keep downloaded installers, patches and configuration files on an external hard drive for game backups, and maintain a second copy on another drive. GOG’s support center, for example, provides a way to download backup installers and bonus content for titles that offer them.
- Record account-recovery details. Store the account email, recovery codes and any required launcher information securely. A copied file does not replace an account needed to validate a license.
- Read the shutdown notice for exceptions. Look specifically for always-online requirements, external-launcher dependencies, cloud-only saves, DLC deadlines and promised replacement patches.
- Preserve legitimate physical options where available. A disc or cartridge can provide another source of game data, but it may still require a patch, activation or online service. Physical media is not automatically permanent access.
What a backup drive can and cannot preserve
| A backup can preserve | A backup cannot guarantee |
|---|---|
| Downloaded game data and installers | A valid account entitlement if the platform revokes it |
| Offline patches and configuration files | Authentication from a retired launcher or license server |
| DRM-free installers supplied by the publisher or store | Multiplayer, cloud saves or live events hosted on closed servers |
| A known-good local installation for future hardware | Compatibility with a new operating system or hardware generation |
Use two separate storage devices and periodically verify that the files can still be read. Keep installers with their version information, and note which games passed an offline launch test. This creates a recoverable local copy; it does not turn a server-dependent product into a self-contained one.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Digital, physical and DRM-free purchases compared
When you have a choice, compare the dependency rather than assuming one format is universally safer.
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Offline capability | Can the game start and load local saves with the network disconnected? |
| Account and launcher dependence | Does first launch or every launch require a store client, publisher account or activation service? |
| Server dependence | Are multiplayer, progression or even the main menu hosted remotely? |
| Backup-installer availability | Can you download an installer or patch that works without the storefront client? |
| Redownload policy | Does the platform state how long existing purchases remain downloadable? |
| Physical fallback | Does the disc or cartridge contain a usable build, or does it still require a large download and online activation? |
A DRM-free installer gives you the clearest local preservation path, but it can still become incompatible with future operating systems. A physical edition reduces dependence on one storefront while leaving possible patch, activation and server dependencies. A conventional digital purchase is convenient, but its durability depends most heavily on account and platform policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the license language means
Digital checkout language can feel like buying a copy, while the governing agreement defines access as a personal license. Steam’s Subscriber Agreement states: “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” It describes a non-exclusive, personal, non-commercial license and says use may require a Steam account, the Steam client and an internet connection. Under those terms, downloading a file is not the same legal event as owning a transferable physical object.
That wording does not settle every consumer-rights question. The platform contract usually governs the account access it promises, while mandatory local law may add protections. Do not assume a universal right to permanent access or an automatic refund when a game disappears.

European Union remedies
A European Parliament response about Directive 2019/770 describes remedies for certain digital-content conformity failures, including bringing the content into conformity, receiving a proportionate price reduction or terminating the contract. The directive’s application depends on the facts and the country’s implementation; it is not a blanket promise that every shutdown produces compensation.
Australia and other jurisdictions
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s digital-platform inquiry discusses standard-form terms that allow a platform to sever access to a purchased game and compares server withdrawal with withdrawing support for other software. Readers elsewhere should consult the consumer agency and law applicable to their country or state, especially when access has been removed rather than merely when new sales have ended.
Troubleshooting common closure scenarios
The game is still in my library but will not download
Check whether the platform has ended redownloads, whether the account is signed into the original region and whether the title requires a separate launcher. If the service has announced a deadline, download before it rather than repeatedly retrying afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe game installs but asks for a login
Reconnect while the service is available, complete authentication and repeat the offline test. If the login is mandatory on every launch, a local backup alone will not solve the dependency; look for an official offline patch or publisher statement.
Single-player works but multiplayer does not
This usually indicates a server shutdown rather than a missing local file. Check for an official replacement backend, community-supported option permitted by the publisher, or a patch that converts the mode to local play. Do not expect cloud saves, leaderboards or live events to survive automatically.
A physical disc no longer starts the game
Confirm whether the disc contains the complete executable, whether an installed patch is required and whether activation still contacts a live service. Physical media can fail for the same server or license reasons as a download.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Is the title still sold, or only present in an existing library?
- Can you download an installer without the storefront client?
- Does the first launch require an account, launcher or internet connection?
- Can the game reach its main menu and load a local save offline?
- Which features depend on a publisher server?
- Have you stored the files on two separate drives?
- Have you saved account-recovery information and the platform’s shutdown notice?
- What consumer law and support deadline apply in your location?
