In a permadeath game, death ends the current life, character, or run instead of allowing a normal reload and immediate continuation. What happens to the save afterward depends on the game: it may start a new run, let you recruit a replacement character, leave the world available only for spectating, or reset the run while preserving long-term progress. “Permadeath” describes the permanence of death, not one universal save system.
Before starting a one-life mode, find out exactly what is deleted, what carries over, whether a successor is possible, and whether the setting can be changed after the game begins.

Permadeath is a family of save rules, not one rule
The shared idea is that the active life cannot simply be resumed after death. A conventional game might reload an earlier checkpoint, restore the same character, or let you continue from a recent save. A permadeath design removes that ordinary safety net for a defined part of the game.
The permanent part can apply to different scopes:
- Character: one avatar is gone permanently, but the campaign or world may continue with another character.
- Run: the current attempt ends and a new attempt begins.
- Squad or party: a dead roster member may be removed even if the wider campaign remains playable.
- World or campaign: the entire active save may become inaccessible for normal play.
- Progress layer: the run resets, while selected long-term knowledge or progression remains.
That is why two games can both advertise “permadeath” while producing very different outcomes. The label tells you that death matters; the mode’s save implementation tells you what you can do next.

The five questions that reveal the real rule
- What is lost? Is it the avatar, inventory, current run, recruited squad, or whole world?
- What survives? Look for player knowledge, unlocks, currencies, world state, or the ability to use a replacement character.
- Can you continue playing? The options may be a respawn, a successor, a new run, or spectating only.
- How is the save committed? The mode may use one committed campaign save, ordinary manual or automatic saves, or a run-based reset.
- Can the setting be changed? Some modes are optional at creation but become fixed once the world or campaign starts.
Answering those questions is more useful than relying on the word “hardcore,” “ironman,” or “permadeath” alone.
What usually happens immediately after death?
Most permadeath systems fall into one of four post-death outcomes. The game may combine more than one, but the distinction helps you predict the next screen and the state of your save.
1. The active save becomes a finished or locked world
In the strictest version, the character cannot return and the campaign cannot be resumed through normal play. The save may remain on your device rather than being erased, but it is no longer an active playable run. Some games turn that world into a viewing or spectating space instead of deleting it.
2. A successor replaces the dead character
Some campaigns make the character’s death permanent while keeping the wider scenario alive. You start or acquire a new character, then continue in the same campaign under whatever world consequences the game defines. This is still permadeath for the original character even though the player is not forced to abandon the entire campaign.
3. The current run resets
Run-based games often treat death as the end of an attempt. The next action is to begin another randomized or newly generated run. The run’s immediate equipment, position, and circumstances are lost, while the design may intentionally preserve selected long-term progress or knowledge.

4. The player can only spectate
A mode may leave the dead world or session loaded but remove all active control. Spectating is not a hidden respawn: you can observe the world, but you cannot bring the dead character back under that mode’s rules.
Examples of how named modes implement death
| Game or label | Rule after death | What remains available | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft Bedrock Hardcore | No respawn; the official article states, “When you die, you will not respawn – game over!” | The dead world remains available for spectating. | Hardcore cannot be disabled after the world is created. |
| Barotrauma Permadeath | A character’s death is permanent. | You can acquire a new character and continue the broader campaign. | The permanent loss applies to the character, not necessarily the whole campaign. |
| Barotrauma Ironman | No respawning after death. | The player remains able to spectate. | Its post-death behavior is stricter than Barotrauma’s Permadeath mode. |
| Hades-style roguelite run | Death ends the current randomized run and starts another attempt. | Knowledge carries forward between attempts. | The run reset is part of the game’s repeating structure. |
| “Hardcore” as a general label | Epic’s documentation defines hardcore as no respawn after elimination. | Other surviving systems depend on the individual game. | The label is not a complete specification of save behavior. |
Does permadeath delete your save?
Not necessarily. “Permanent” usually describes the dead character or run, not whether the save file is physically erased. A game can preserve the file so that you can inspect the world, watch remaining players, or record the outcome while still preventing the dead character from returning.

- Deleted or replaced: the game removes the active run and creates a fresh one.
- Locked but present: the world or campaign remains stored, but normal play with the dead character is disabled.
- Reset with meta-progression: the run is discarded while selected long-term information remains for the next attempt.
Do not assume that a visible save slot means a recoverable life. A slot can be present solely for spectating or record-keeping. Conversely, a new-run prompt does not mean every form of progression vanished; some games deliberately separate temporary run state from persistent progression.
Can you respawn in Hardcore or Ironman mode?
In a strict no-respawn implementation, no. Hardcore is commonly used to mean that elimination does not permit a normal respawn, and Epic’s documentation uses that concise definition. The exact consequences around that rule still vary.

Minecraft Bedrock Hardcore is explicit: death produces no respawn and is treated as game over. The world remains available for spectating, and the Hardcore setting cannot be turned off after world creation. That means changing the rule later is not an emergency recovery option.
Barotrauma demonstrates why the mode name matters. Its Permadeath mode makes the character’s death permanent but allows a new character to be acquired. Its Ironman mode removes respawning and leaves the player spectating after death. Both are severe, but they do not produce the same continuation path.
If a game offers both Hardcore and Ironman, read the mode description rather than treating the names as interchangeable. Check whether “no respawn” means a replacement is allowed, the campaign ends, or the player can only watch.
What carries over after death in a roguelike or roguelite?
Run-based designs make death part of the normal loop. In Hades, Supergiant describes dying, returning to a new randomized run, and carrying knowledge forward. The key distinction is between run state and persistent state.
Run state that commonly ends
- Your current position and immediate route through the run.
- The temporary situation created by that attempt.
- The specific combination of events, rooms, or encounters generated for that run.
Persistent value that can remain
- Player knowledge about systems, enemies, and decision-making.
- Any long-term progression the game explicitly marks as persistent.
The available data evidence establishes knowledge carrying forward in Hades; it does not establish a universal list of currencies, unlocks, weapons, or upgrades for every roguelike. Treat each game’s progression screen and death summary as authoritative. A roguelite reset is therefore different from a campaign-ending Ironman death: the attempt ends, but repetition and learning are expected parts of the design.

Permadeath, Hardcore, Ironman, roguelike and roguelite: how the terms differ
Permadeath
Permadeath means death is permanent for the relevant character or run. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a successor, a fresh run, or spectating is available.
Hardcore
Hardcore commonly signals no respawn after elimination. It is a label rather than a universal standard, so the game may still define what happens to the world, save slot, inventory, or campaign.
Ironman
Ironman often signals a committed campaign or save with limited recovery options. In Barotrauma, Ironman specifically means no respawning and spectating after death. Other games may attach additional restrictions, so confirm the local rules.
Roguelike and roguelite
These are run-based designs in which death commonly starts another attempt. The current run resets, while the structure may preserve knowledge or other long-term progression. That loop can feel like permadeath because each attempt is final, even though the overall game is designed for repeated runs.

How to check a game’s save rules before starting
Use this checklist on the mode-selection screen, manual, or official support page. It prevents the most expensive misunderstanding: assuming a familiar label guarantees a familiar outcome.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Read the death sentence literally. Look for phrases such as “no respawn,” “game over,” “spectate,” “new character,” or “start a new run.”
- Identify the unit of loss. Decide whether the mode removes one character, a party, a run, or the entire world.
- Check continuation options. Find out whether a replacement character can be recruited, whether a new run is automatic or optional, and whether spectating is the only remaining action.
- Separate temporary and permanent progression. Note which items, abilities, currencies, unlocks, or knowledge are described as carrying over. If the game does not say, do not assume.
- Inspect commitment and backup behavior. Determine whether the mode uses one committed save, ordinary saves, or a run reset. A visible save file is not proof that the dead life can be restored.
- Confirm when the setting locks. Minecraft Bedrock Hardcore, for example, cannot be disabled after world creation. Treat similar warnings as irreversible until proven otherwise.
- Test the interface before investing time. If a tutorial or disposable practice run is available, use it to see what the death screen calls the next step.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“Permadeath means the whole game is deleted”
That is only one possible implementation. A dead world can remain for spectating, a campaign can accept a successor, or a run can reset while knowledge persists.
“Hardcore always means one specific experience”
Hardcore generally communicates no respawn, but it does not settle questions about replacement characters, world access, or persistent progression. The mode’s own description takes priority.
“Ironman and Permadeath are synonyms”
Barotrauma shows the difference: Permadeath permits a new character, while Ironman leaves the player spectating with no respawn. Similar names can conceal different recovery paths.

The run may be gone by design, while knowledge or other explicitly persistent elements remain. Check the game’s progression model instead of judging persistence from the run summary alone.
“I can switch the mode off after dying”
Some modes lock their rules at world or campaign creation. If the setup screen warns that the setting cannot be changed, assume the restriction is permanent for that save.
Choosing the right expectation before you commit
Players who want a single high-stakes story should look for a mode that clearly explains character or campaign loss and whether a successor exists. Players who prefer repeated experimentation should look for a run-based structure that states what carries forward. Players who want to observe a world after failure should verify that spectating is supported rather than assuming the save will remain usable.
The practical rule is simple: treat death as final for whatever the mode explicitly marks as permanent, then verify the next available action. A new run, a replacement character, and a spectate-only world are three different outcomes, even though all may be marketed with the same permadeath language.
