Transferring a Pokémon to Professor Willow permanently removes it from your Pokémon storage. In return, Pokémon GO awards Candy and frees storage space, but Niantic says the Pokémon cannot be recovered after you confirm. Review every selection before tapping the final confirmation.
The short answer: transfer means permanent removal
In the normal Pokémon GO transfer, you hand a Pokémon to Professor Willow. It leaves your collection immediately, your storage slot becomes available, and the game awards Candy. The exchange cannot be undone: Niantic’s Help Center states, “You’ll receive Candy in exchange for transferring a Pokémon, but be careful: you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”

That makes transfer a cleanup and resource decision, not a temporary way to hide a Pokémon. A transferred Pokémon will no longer appear in your storage, cannot be used in battles or raids, and cannot be selected for future trades. The Candy is the only in-game reward described for the ordinary Willow transfer; Niantic’s current guidance does not promise a universal Candy amount for every Pokémon, so do not assume a fixed number before confirming.

- Open your Pokémon storage. From the Map View, tap the Main Menu button, then choose Pokémon.
- Open the Pokémon’s details. Tap the Pokémon you are considering removing.
- Open the action menu. Use the menu on the Pokémon’s details screen and choose Transfer.
- Read the warning and confirm. The confirmation prompt is your last chance to cancel. Check the species, appraisal, moves, costume or form, and whether you intended to keep it before accepting.
Niantic can change button placement or confirmation wording as the app is updated. If your screen differs, follow the current labels shown in Pokémon GO; the underlying path remains the Pokémon storage screen followed by the Pokémon’s action menu and Transfer.

How to transfer several Pokémon at once
- From the Pokémon list, press and hold one eligible Pokémon until it becomes selected.
- Tap each additional Pokémon you want to include. Selected Pokémon are marked in the list.
- Tap Transfer, review the batch warning, and confirm only after checking the complete selection.
Batch transfer is useful for clearing large numbers of unwanted catches, but it removes the safety of opening each Pokémon’s full detail screen first. Sort or filter your storage before selecting, and inspect any unusual entries individually. A single mistaken tap can include a rare Pokémon alongside routine catches.
Which Pokémon are blocked from transfer?
Several protections prevent common mistakes. The game will not let you transfer a Pokémon that is currently your active Buddy, is marked as a favorite, or is defending a Gym. Remove the Buddy assignment, turn off the favorite marker, or wait until the Pokémon is no longer defending before trying again.
Restrictions on batch transfer
- Legendary and Mythical Pokémon: To select multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon in one batch, first enable the corresponding transfer option in Pokémon GO’s settings. Some individual species, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for transfer.
- Shiny Pokémon: Multiple Shiny Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. Handle them one at a time if the game permits the individual transfer.
- Lucky Pokémon: Multiple Lucky Pokémon are excluded from batch transfer.
- Good Buddy or higher: Multiple Pokémon with Good Buddy status or above cannot be transferred together.
These limits do not make an unwanted Pokémon safe to delete; they simply force a slower confirmation process for categories that players are more likely to regret losing. If a batch is rejected, remove the protected category from the selection and process eligible Pokémon separately.

What you receive: Candy and storage capacity
Candy
A successful Willow transfer awards Candy associated with the transferred Pokémon. Candy is used for actions such as powering up or evolving Pokémon from that species family. The official transfer guidance confirms the reward but does not state one fixed amount that applies in every case. Treat any amount shown in your own confirmation screen as the authoritative result for that transfer, rather than relying on a general rule.

Storage space
The Pokémon is removed from your storage as soon as the transfer completes, so one storage slot is available for a future catch. The transfer itself is not a way to archive a Pokémon for later retrieval: once the confirmation succeeds, the original entry is gone from Pokémon GO.
Three different meanings of “transfer”
Players often use transfer for three separate actions. The destination determines what you receive, which restrictions apply, and whether the Pokémon can ever be used in Pokémon GO again.

Sending Pokémon to Pokémon HOME
Pokémon HOME is a separate destination from Professor Willow. To use it, link your Pokémon GO account with the Pokémon HOME account and use GO Transporter Energy when sending an eligible Pokémon. Energy is consumed by the send; the exact cost depends on the Pokémon and the transfer presented by the game.
What happens after the send
The Pokémon does not appear in HOME Boxes merely because the send was initiated. You must open Pokémon HOME and receive the incoming Pokémon first. Only after that acceptance does it show in the HOME Boxes.

Eligibility and changes
Not every Pokémon can be sent to HOME. The app identifies ineligible entries during the send flow, so check the list before spending Transporter Energy. A Lucky or Purified status does not carry over, and a Pokémon’s form may change when it arrives. These changes make HOME unsuitable as a perfect backup of the Pokémon GO record.
Niantic’s Help Center also makes the direction explicit: “you cannot send Pokémon from Pokémon HOME to Pokémon GO.” HOME is therefore an outbound destination from GO, not a recovery system for a Pokémon you removed or exported.
Sending Pokémon to a Nintendo Switch game
The supported Pokémon: Let’s Go connection uses a compatible Nintendo Switch workflow rather than Professor Willow’s transfer menu. After connecting the accounts and choosing an eligible Pokémon, send it to the GO Park complex in Pokémon: Let’s Go. It leaves Pokémon GO as part of that process.
The game awards Candy and XP for the send. The first send also triggers a Mystery Box. Because the Pokémon cannot be transferred back to Pokémon GO, use this route only when you intend to continue with it in the Switch game and have checked that the Pokémon is eligible.

Transfer is not the same as trading
Trading moves a Pokémon to another Trainer instead of deleting it for Candy. Niantic’s trading guidance requires Trainers to meet in person, and a traded Pokémon’s CP, HP, and other statistics can change. A trade therefore has a different destination, social requirement, and outcome from the irreversible Willow transfer. If your goal is to let another player keep the Pokémon, trade it rather than selecting Transfer.
A safe decision process before confirming
- Identify the destination. Decide whether you want Candy and storage space, a HOME collection, or a Switch game. Do not open the Willow menu when you actually intend to export to HOME or Let’s Go.
- Check sentimental and collection value. Look for event costumes, unusual forms, legacy moves, high appraisal, Shiny coloration, Lucky status, or a high Buddy level. The game’s protection rules are not a complete inventory of what may matter to you.
- Check battle and evolution plans. Review CP, appraisal, moves, and whether the Pokémon is part of a team or an evolution project. A low-CP Pokémon may still be the one you planned to evolve or power up.
- Remove accidental blockers deliberately. If it is a favorite, active Buddy, or Gym defender, decide whether changing that status is really intended. Do not alter a protection setting merely to make a batch go through.
- Use single-Pokémon transfer for exceptions. Process rare, Shiny, Lucky, Mythical, or high-Buddy entries separately whenever the game allows it.
- Read the final confirmation. Verify the number of Pokémon and the species represented. Cancel if anything looks different from your plan.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming transfer is reversible
There is no restore command, undo button, or recovery period for a completed Willow transfer. If you are uncertain, leave the Pokémon in storage and mark it as a favorite until you decide.
Expecting a fixed Candy payout
Niantic confirms Candy but does not give a universal amount in the transfer article. Do not transfer a valuable Pokémon solely because you expect a particular quantity.

Confusing HOME with cloud backup
HOME receives eligible outbound Pokémon after you spend GO Transporter Energy and accept them in HOME. It does not send Pokémon back to GO and does not preserve every GO status or form unchanged.

Using a bulk selection without checking filters
Batch tools can select many entries quickly, while favorites and other protected categories may be excluded or trigger a warning. Scroll through the selected list before confirming, especially after sorting by recent catches or species.
Calling a trade a transfer
A trade is an in-person exchange between Trainers and can alter statistics. Choose the trade feature when another player is meant to receive the Pokémon; choose Willow only when you accept permanent removal for Candy.
Practical checklist
- Is Professor Willow, Pokémon HOME, or a Nintendo Switch game the intended destination?
- Have you confirmed the exact Pokémon, form, costume, moves, appraisal, and Buddy status?
- Is it a favorite, active Buddy, or Gym defender that should remain protected?
- For a batch, have you checked every selected entry rather than trusting the filter?
- If using HOME, are the accounts linked and is sufficient GO Transporter Energy available?
- If using Let’s Go, are you prepared for the Pokémon to leave GO and appear in GO Park?
- Have you read the final confirmation before accepting?
Bottom line
For the ordinary Pokémon GO action, “transfer” means permanent deletion from your Pokémon storage in exchange for Candy and a free storage slot. HOME and the Pokémon: Let’s Go connection are separate outbound destinations with their own eligibility rules and irreversible results. Choose the destination first, inspect every selection, and confirm only Pokémon you are prepared to lose from Pokémon GO.
