AMD now calls the feature FSR Upscaling in its FSR Redstone suite, lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards for the machine-learning upscaler, and separately says its standard Adrenalin software does not support handheld gaming devices. A handheld therefore needs all three pieces confirmed by its manufacturer: an eligible GPU, an OEM driver that exposes the feature, and a game with the correct FSR integration.
What “FSR 4” means now
FSR 4 is the familiar name for AMD’s machine-learning upscaling technology. In current AMD documentation it appears as FSR Upscaling, one component of the broader FSR Redstone suite. AMD says the rename separates upscaling from Redstone’s other technologies, including frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching. A game or driver menu may still use the label “FSR 4,” so seeing either name can refer to the same upscaling feature.

Upscaling renders a game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image. That can raise frame rates, but it does not by itself create additional frames. FSR Frame Generation is a separate feature with its own game, operating-system and driver requirements. Treating every Redstone feature as interchangeable is the quickest way to misread a compatibility list.
The hardware requirement: what AMD actually lists
AMD’s current FSR material identifies Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards for ML-based FSR Upscaling. AMD also says RX 6000 Series support is planned for 2027. That statement is about Radeon graphics support generally; it does not confirm that a handheld APU, including one marketed with an RX 7000-series label, will receive the feature.

The practical test is therefore not the product name printed on a handheld’s box. Ask whether the OEM names the exact GPU or APU, supplies a driver that enables FSR Upscaling, and documents the supported game path. Without all three, compatibility is unconfirmed.
Why the normal AMD driver does not answer the handheld question
AMD’s Adrenalin 25.6.1 release notes contain an explicit limitation in the Radeon product-compatibility section: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Users should check with the OEM for device specific drivers.
This matters because desktop Radeon support and handheld support are separate software paths. A handheld maker may redistribute a customized graphics package, add power-management controls, or enable only a subset of features. Installing a desktop Adrenalin package is not a supported way to turn an unlisted handheld into an FSR 4 device, and a successful installation would not constitute AMD or OEM confirmation.

The documentation should identify the handheld model, not merely the underlying Ryzen or Radeon family. If the OEM only documents older FSR modes, generic Radeon upscaling or a different driver package, do not infer FSR Upscaling support.

The game requirement: integration and API determine the route
Even an eligible GPU and driver cannot add FSR Upscaling to a game that lacks the required integration. AMD describes two routes:
Native game integration
The developer integrates the relevant FSR technology in the game. You normally select the option from the game’s graphics menu. Some menus may still label the option “FSR 4”; others use “FSR Upscaling.” Native integration is controlled by the game build and can differ between platforms or renderers.
Driver-upgraded ML upscaling
AMD’s driver-upgrade route applies ML-based upscaling to games that already have FSR 3.1 or newer, use the standard integration described in the FSR SDK, and run through DirectX 12. A game listed for this route is not automatically native FSR 4; the driver is supplying the upgrade.
AMD’s live Gaming Technologies Supported Games catalog identifies titles that support one or more Redstone technologies and distinguishes native integrations from driver-upgraded entries. A title can support one Redstone feature without supporting FSR Upscaling, so read the feature column and route marker rather than searching for the word “FSR” alone. AMD marks certain entries with an asterisk to indicate FSR 3.1 integration that requires the driver-upgrade feature.

FSR Upscaling versus Frame Generation
Upscaling and frame generation have different prerequisites. For AMD’s driver-upgraded ML-based frame generation, the supported-games information calls for:
- FSR Frame Generation version 3.1.4 or newer in the game;
- Windows 11; and
- DirectX 12.
Those requirements apply to frame generation, not automatically to FSR Upscaling. A handheld running another operating system, an older Windows release or a game using a different API may therefore be ineligible for the frame-generation route even if its upscaling path is documented. Conversely, a game supporting frame generation is not proof that ML-based FSR Upscaling is available.
Which handhelds are confirmed?
AMD’s published material reviewed for this question names no handheld as confirmed compatible. That means there is currently no official AMD list that lets you answer “yes” for Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go or another particular model solely from the product name. The same caution applies to handhelds built around Ryzen Z1 Extreme or another APU whose graphics architecture resembles an eligible Radeon series.

It is a documentation boundary: AMD’s RX-series list does not equal an OEM certification, and AMD’s standard Adrenalin package expressly excludes handheld devices. A manufacturer could document a supported custom driver and game path, but that evidence must come from the manufacturer or a current AMD compatibility notice for the exact model.

How to verify a handheld before installing anything
Use this checklist for each model and each game. Save the driver version and date you verified, because support pages and game catalogs can change.
- Identify the exact graphics device. Record the handheld model, APU name, integrated-GPU model and operating system edition. Do not stop at a family name such as “Ryzen Z1.”
- Check the OEM driver page. Look for a release note that explicitly mentions FSR Upscaling, FSR 4 or the applicable Redstone feature for that handheld. Confirm that the package is the OEM’s handheld driver, not the generic desktop Adrenalin installer.
- Check AMD’s current GPU list. RX 7000 and RX 9000 are the currently listed series for ML-based FSR Upscaling. Treat the list as a necessary indicator, not a handheld guarantee.
- Find the game in AMD’s live supported-games catalog. Read the feature and route information. Verify that the entry is for ML-based FSR Upscaling, not only frame generation, ray regeneration or radiance caching.
- Confirm the API and version. Driver-upgraded upscaling requires FSR 3.1 or newer, standard FSR SDK integration and DirectX 12. Check the game’s graphics API setting and whether the handheld’s OS and driver expose it.
- Check for updates on both sides. Update the game only through its supported channel and install the OEM driver version the manufacturer specifies. A desktop driver update can replace or conflict with handheld-specific software.
- Look for an in-game toggle. Native implementations usually appear under Settings, Graphics or Display. The label may be “FSR Upscaling” or “FSR 4.” If the option is absent, do not force-enable an unrelated FSR mode and call it FSR 4.
Enabling the feature when the route is documented
Native integration
- Install the handheld OEM’s documented graphics driver and reboot if required.
- Launch the supported game and open its graphics or display settings.
- Select FSR Upscaling or the menu’s FSR 4 option, then choose the available quality preset.
- Apply the setting and restart the game if it requests a restart.
AMD driver-upgrade route
AMD’s general procedure is performed with the game closed. On a supported system, open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, go to Gaming > Graphics, and enable AMD FSR Upscaling. If the game and system support it, enable Frame Generation separately. Then launch the game and turn on the corresponding FSR option in its graphics settings.
That menu path is not a workaround for the handheld limitation in the Adrenalin release notes. On a handheld, follow the OEM’s equivalent control panel or instructions. If the OEM does not expose the setting, the driver-upgrade route is not confirmed for that device.

How to read AMD’s game list without overclaiming
AMD’s catalog is a live reference, not a permanent compatibility certificate. It lists games supporting one or more Redstone technologies, and entries can change as patches and drivers change. The catalog conditions state that Redstone games run with Adrenalin 25.12.1 or newer on RX 9000 Series graphics cards. It separately states that FSR Redstone Upscaling only is available on RX 7000 Series graphics cards with Adrenalin 26.6.2 or newer.

Those version notes describe AMD’s listed graphics configurations. They do not override the handheld-driver exclusion in Adrenalin 25.6.1 or certify an OEM’s customized package. On a handheld, treat the catalog as the game-side check and the OEM support page as the device-side check; both must agree.
What launch-era claims can—and cannot—tell you
AMD’s 2025 launch announcement said FSR 4 was available in more than 30 games at launch. That was a launch-era count, not a current total and not a count of handheld-compatible games. Current availability must be checked in AMD’s live catalog.
AMD has published performance claims for desktop hardware such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT. Those figures are not handheld measurements. Handheld power limits, cooling, memory configuration and OEM drivers differ, so desktop results cannot be used to predict a frame rate on a portable device.
A decision rule for buying or updating a handheld
Do not choose a handheld on the assumption that a similar GPU name guarantees FSR 4. Require written evidence for the exact model:
- the GPU or APU is covered by the current AMD eligibility information;
- the OEM provides a handheld-specific driver that exposes FSR Upscaling;
- your target game appears in AMD’s catalog with the FSR Upscaling route you need;
- the game runs through the required API, normally DirectX 12 for driver-upgraded upscaling; and
- the documented driver and game versions are still available for your operating system.
If any item is missing, classify the handheld as unconfirmed, not compatible. That label is more useful than relying on forum reports or a generic “FSR supported” badge, because it separates the GPU, driver and game conditions that must all be met.
