3dstool.exe is usually the Windows command-line build of dnasdw/3dstool, an open-source utility for extracting and creating Nintendo 3DS ROM structures. It can be legitimate, but the filename alone proves nothing: malware can use the same name. Is 3dstool.exe safe?
A file downloaded from the expected dnasdw project release can be a legitimate open-source utility. You cannot establish safety from the name, icon or a search-result description. A copy from an impersonating account, a repackaged archive or an unrelated download page needs a different level of scrutiny.

- Open the project account and release page you intended to use rather than a mirror or an advertisement.
- Check that the archive name, release notes and contained files match that project. A TranslationToolkit configuration, for example, points both win32 and win64 downloads to dnasdw’s version 1.1.0
3dstool.ziprelease and names the executable3dstool.exe. That is useful provenance evidence for that package, not proof that every file with the same name is authentic. - Compare the architecture with your intended build. A win32 archive and a win64 archive are not interchangeable evidence of what you downloaded.
- In File Explorer, right-click the archive and executable, choose Properties, and inspect the publisher or digital-signature information when it is present. An absent signature does not automatically mean malware, but it removes one possible check.
- Scan the archive and the extracted executable with your installed security software before opening it.
Malwarebytes reported in 2026 that attackers were using fake software repositories on legitimate platforms, including GitHub and SourceForge, and advised downloading software only from official vendor websites. That warning applies even when the hosting domain itself is reputable.
Why does Windows say “Windows protected your PC” for 3dstool.exe?
Windows can attach Mark-of-the-Web information to files downloaded from the internet. SmartScreen or another Windows security component may warn about or block an executable when its origin or reputation is not established. The warning is not a diagnosis that this particular 3dstool.exe is malicious; it is a reason to verify the source before allowing it to run.
How do I unblock a trusted download?
- Do not click through the warning until you have checked the repository, release archive and scan result.
- Close any running copy of the program. In File Explorer, right-click the downloaded archive or executable and select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox or button. Select it only when you trust the source, choose Apply, then OK.
- Extract the archive again if you unblocked the archive, and retry from Command Prompt.
Microsoft’s guidance is: “Only unblock files from trusted sources.” If the source is unfamiliar, leave the file blocked and obtain a verified release instead. Never disable antivirus or SmartScreen merely to force an unknown copy to run.

How do I fix 3dstool.exe errors on Windows?
Work through these steps in order. They separate a bad download from a command, path or input problem, so you do not replace a healthy executable unnecessarily.

- Return to the expected project’s release page and download the complete archive for Windows.
- Choose the win32 or win64 package that matches the build you intend to run. If you are unsure which archive you previously used, start over with a freshly downloaded package rather than adding files to the old folder.
- Save the archive to a local folder, scan it, and extract all of its contents. Keep the executable with any files supplied by that release.
- Do not “repair” a missing dependency by downloading an isolated DLL from an unrelated website. That can create a second provenance problem and may not match the executable’s architecture.
2. Confirm that Windows is not blocking the file
Use the Properties and Unblock procedure above only after verifying the source. If the option is absent, the block may be enforced by policy or another security component; do not work around that policy blindly. Test the newly extracted file after the archive has been scanned.
3. Run the executable from Command Prompt
- Open the folder containing
3dstool.exein File Explorer, click the address bar, typecmd, and press Enter. This opens Command Prompt in that directory. - Run
3dstool --help. Read the switches printed by your build instead of assuming that a command written for another release has identical syntax. - Run the operation again from that same window. A terminal preserves the actual error text, including which input or output path failed.
HackingToolkit3DS examples use -xtf for extraction and -ctf for creation, with explicit paths for the header, ExeFS, RomFS, banner and partition data. A pattern using ordinary filenames looks like this:

4. Check every working path
- Confirm that the input 3DS, CXI or CFA file really exists and that its extension has not been hidden or changed.
- Confirm that each output directory exists before starting. Create a separate, writable working folder rather than using a protected system directory.
- Put double quotation marks around paths containing spaces, such as
"C:UsersAlex3DS Projectsgame.3ds". - Keep component files from one extraction together. Mixing a header from one image with an ExeFS or RomFS from another can produce a structural failure even when the executable is healthy.
- If a relative path fails, retry with a full path. This distinguishes a bad current directory from a damaged input.
5. Repair a damaged installation
If the archive is incomplete, the executable is quarantined, or repeated launches fail before a command is parsed, remove the suspect copy and extract a fresh trusted download into a new folder. Microsoft’s general desktop-program guidance includes restarting Windows, using Repair or Reset when an installed app offers those controls, uninstalling and reinstalling the program, running applicable troubleshooters, and scanning with Windows Security when suspicious software is possible. A command-line release may not expose Repair or Reset, so the clean re-download is usually the relevant equivalent.
6. Respond to a security detection
Stop using the file if your security product detects it or if the repository cannot be verified. Quarantine or remove the download, update the security definitions, and run a system scan. If you already executed a suspicious copy, disconnect sensitive work from that installation while you investigate and follow your security product’s remediation guidance. Do not add an exception just to complete an extraction.
